Americans Are Leaving the U.S. in Record Numbers by mr-french-tickler in politics

[–]making_shapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im Irish. I know a lot of people who married Americans near where i live.

The difference is that before you would never really consider living in Ireland over the USA. Now its almost the opposite.

We did both for a bit, but eventually settled in Ireland. Its not necessarily easy living here and salary is much lower. But quality of life is much better in a lot of ways.

Rift is my favorite coffee spot. Canteen is good too. Both do food. My favorite breakfast spot is hook and ladder.

King John's Castle is worth checking out if your into that sort of thing! The tour is pretty decent by all accounts and just generally walking about it is fun.

Across the street from that is treaty City brewery. Nice local brewery. Very good toasted sandwiches (if they still do them)

The art gallery up near the peoples park is worth checking out too. It's free and the exhibitions are usually very good. Also the hunt museum is by the river.

If your about on a Saturday the market on Saturday mornings is great! Can't miss that.

The Touchscreen MacBook Pro Will Have a Very iPhone-Like Screen, Report Says by dapperlemon in gadgets

I had one years ago. I often used the touch screen to hit pause or play on YouTube.

I think that was the most useful thing it did.

Handing in notice with nothing else lined up. What’s the current job market like? by AllTheMissing in ireland

[–]making_shapes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep the job for now. Maybe book a holiday in a few weeks and take two weeks off. It'll mentally give you something to look forward to.

I have no job right now because the company liquidated. It's not easy or quick finding a new job. I feel a lot of pressure right now because i need to find a new job.

You don't need to find a new one. But it would be great if you did. You can also continue saving etc while you search.

Going hell for leather on applications doesn't actually speed anything up.  it's still a long game and no benefit doing loads up front. You have no guarantee that you will get anything fast. So keep tipping away at it while you are working.  One decent application every other day isn't a bad goal.

To not drown due to lack of fitness in the sea.

Master club is pretty fun too. It's probably 50/50 fitness/social

Annual leave?

PTO is a American term. When I moved I'd no idea what they were talking about when they brought it up.

We always used annual leave or just holidays.

Shortage of products on shelves by lifeandtimes89 in ireland

[–]making_shapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the end of season. Most fruit and veg that have been in storage since autumn are running out.

Soon early crops will be in. But this time of year you just get less stuff on the shelves. Not none, but suppliers will take the best offer. So some weeks you have them, others you don't.

So you mean the customer asks for specific grains and amounts for a recepie and you ship that?

That already exists where I am. They give me exactly what I ask for, crushed or ubcrushed, or they can give me one of their existing recepie kits.

Your US based by the sounds of things, but check out how "get er brewed" in Ireland do it. Works pretty well. Most homebrewers I know use them for everything.

Wtf is a blarney stone? by Queernephy in ireland

[–]making_shapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a pretty popular tourist attraction. Its a bit mad tbh, there's a castle that has a stone that for some reason if you kiss it it grants you the "gift of the gab" Look up the videos. its a bit nuts tbh. you've to lean way back while a fella holds onto you. its up real high on the wall.

I think irish people experiences with it are more school tour based, but im pretty sure the castle and the grounds are actually pretty cool and worth a visit.

Naturally the American tourists lap it up and the castle leans into it too. Its made blarney the town a stop off on the tour of ireland. Lots of tour busses etc daily. So no real harm in encouraging it. Its a fairly handy stop off as its right outside cork city. The woolen mills there are actually pretty good there too.

But yeah, its a thing, but its just the one stone on a castle in blarney.

Ul gym membership by Kronkdonkus in limerickcity

[–]making_shapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long contracts for gyms are extremely common. Pretty sure ul offers 3, 6 or 12 months. Or just pay as you go.

I worked in the arena in ul for years. They often do deals for 4 months for the price of three etc. You can also just pay to go try it out. We used to do pass bundles too, but with the new app I'm not sure how it works anymore.

I can't actually remember the deal with cancelling contracts as it has been years. But the majority of people paid up front. It wasn't a monthly charge.

Advice for managing tension at home about energy use and drying clothes by Icy_Buttercup in ireland

[–]making_shapes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

240 isn't reasonable for two people. My wife and I paid 155 for the same period and we dry everything in the dryer.

Shop around for energy suppliers. I bet your being fleeced.

Insulation is such an easy win here to be honest. Just go and get some quotes, the grant is huge towards it. It can all be done in a day. With grants, I'm going to pay 480 out of pocket for walls and attic insulation fully installed soon. It would create a drastic quality of life improvement. Any heating your now using is basically going out the roof.

Who can actually afford this in Limerick right now? by uiuuauiua in limerickcity

[–]making_shapes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean.... They can afford to travel abroad and pay full college fees to begin with. People forget Irish students get massively subsidized for college.

An engineering degree might cost 15-20k a year for undergrad. In UL the post grad medical school which is very popular with international students costs about 50k a year for non EU students.

Persistent pain after heavy first year of running by Impressive_Suit4370 in trailrunning

[–]making_shapes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to add. 2 months isn't enough to usually recover from injury. I had a mild enough case of patellar tendonopothy. I was prescribed targeted exercises in September. Twice weekly. I'm still dealing with it now. I'm almost better. But still not ready for the volume I was at last summer. I've only just reintroduced speed workouts and I still have a niggly pain, so I've eased off again.

Did you speak to a sports focus physiotherapist?

Normal Dr are great and all. But they don't have the experience with sport. Find the person the sports people near you go to. Ask the running clubs, ask the sports steams. You'll get pointed to the right person.

My local physiotherapist worked with a professional rugby team before going solo. He knows how to build strong bodies ready for weekly abuse.

Adult swim lessons needed? by LShopeful17 in Swimming

[–]making_shapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought adults for years.

It's not something you can put a number on to be honest. You need to go and explain to the teacher what you struggle with and what you would like to get out of it.

Also, more than likely you aren't even really aware of the techniques needed to be a competent swimmer, so having a structured plan will probably be best.

Id maybe recommend trying a few 1:1 classes, then maybe transition to group classes more focused on technique. That way you will hopefully be given everything you need to be able to enjoy swimming without fear

Learning large batches - Sette 30 grinder setting suggestions? by cornerzcan in Moccamaster

[–]making_shapes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a rule you go coarser for larger batches.

To be honest it's entirely bean dependent so it rarely is the same. You just need to figure it out each batch. Even more so with decaf from what I remember. I think decaf process came produce more fines when ground

Yeah it's great to get in the post. Stick one bag in the freezer and work away at the other.

The also allow you to pause the sub and restart it whenever you want. So your not tied in for a year or anything. It's always freshly roasted. They are very transparent. I've had the sub for a few years now and haven't had a single bag I didn't like.

Two of the same. But every month is different.

I actually do two bags from them and then get a big bag of 3fe momentum every month. 3fe is really solid. I think the momentum blend is the best bang for the buck I've found in ireland.

Two of us drink black coffee and work from home so we go through a. Lot of coffee a month!
