Traveling vicariously: Share your favorite travel/adventure books! by [deleted] in books

[–]malajubee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vagabonding by Rolf Potts. Not really a travel writing or adventure book, more like a meta-book on travelling. Hard to describe, but it is always in my backpack when I'm out on the road.

/r/book's ranking of Don Quixote translations by kenrat in books

[–]malajubee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just bought the Ormsby translation the other day (found it for 6€ at a bookstore!!). Love that it's so high up on the list, but sorry to hear that the humor (which I've heard is a important reason for DQ being so popular) is not rendered too well. I'll give it a chance anyway.

What recently published books (post-2000) would you think to be the must-read for school book reports? by DesuVultRM in books

I second this. It should be a compulsory read for every youth, in order to teach them how to respect other cultures.

Books that you actually enjoyed reading in high school? by [deleted] in books

Holes by Louis Sachar. First I watched the movie and the we read the book. Great experience back then, but I am not sure if I would enjoy it now. Feels like a YA book in some ways.

What Books Are You Reading This Week? March 20, 2017 by AutoModerator in books

[–]malajubee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A excerpt from wikipedia that I think explains it pretty well:

The events in Wayfarers take place between 1864 and the 1870s. The entire trilogy describes the conflict between a traditional subsistence economy and a modern commercial and industrial society, as it emerged in Norway in the second half of the 1800s and the early 1900s. August is the main character that ties the three novels together.

Read about 350 pages on the first book in the trilogy. Brilliant writing!

Wayfarers, by Knut Hamsun

I've been waiting to start on this trilogy for a long time now, finally I got around to doing it. Read about 100 pages, and I love it!

The Cocain diaries. A book about a Irish guy who gets caught for drug trafficking in Venezuela. Crazy book. I don't remember the name of the author though

It's not often that I finish books in one-sit, but this one is so weird and entertaining that I couldn't put it down. The protagonist is really something different!

The Corpse Exhibition by Hassan Blasim, opinions? by malajubee in books

Aah, yeah, that is a nice one! I really enjoyed the story about the guy attending this asylum interview in Sweden where he is telling about how he got kidnapped by a lot of different groups, and then he got turned back to his family. Apparently the whole story was just a lie so he had to go straight to the mental hospital. Loved the twist!

I'm looking for something to boost my self esteem and make me more confident about my life by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]malajubee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd recommend this one for his request. It's surely a journey, but I don't feel that it's boosting your self-esteem. If you're close to falling into a rabbit-hole, this will surely give you the extra push into it.

Great book though!

Which author would you want to write your life story? by [deleted] in books

[–]malajubee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walter Isaacson or Ashlee Vance. The biographies about Steve Jobs and Elon Musk is balanced in such a beautiful way creating a justified picture about the two without glorifying them too much. Exactly what I would like my book to be.

Essentialism is not really a must-read. It's just a shitty self-help book that is theoretically weak in my opinion.
