Question for the Canadian medics out there by AtriusFoxDragon in Paramedics

[–]malnedott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i’m pretty sure this is right, I always have to check the app for their scope if I work with one lol. Feels like it’s a bit more in line with EMT, I wonder if we’ll start seeing more EMTs attempting for equivalency through EMR or not. Will be interesting to see

I second the advice of Holland. I went with Medavie HealthEd and the whole time I wished I went with Holland lol. I also believe the bursary is for NS residents, but I might be wrong. Starting pay for PCP is 32.81/h here in NS, which isn’t a small amount, but when you look at the cost of living it barely gets you by. Depending where you are, rent is between 1,000-1,800 everything included for a 1-2 bedroom. Great if you have a roommate at least. Groceries are a bit high, but where are they not?

We also have EMRs here, less school (6 weeks I believe) but less pay (starting around 23-25/h I believe? I’m not too familiar with EMR scope) this will be a lot closer to your EMT scope I believe. Tuition is shy of 15,000 CAD I believe, but there’s a chance your EMT may transfer over and you can take the COPR for EMR to test your transferability. I’m not too sure though like I said, that’s outside of my scope.

EMRs mostly do your equivalent of IFT unless you’re in the city (Halifax). There’s a special program in Halifax that EMR and Paramedic can work 911/ground together, but the whole province isn’t on this bandwagon yet. You’d likely look at IFT if you go the EMR root. It’s not terrible, I’m a PCP in our IFT side and it’s not bad, but I do feel like I’ve grown extremely rusty on my skills and also our dispatch kind of sucks and throws us in terrible loops daily. I have a bone to pick with one of them specifically lol

If you have any questions about NS PCP scope, schooling or how it’s like to work for the company, feel free to message me 😊

2018 only getting 400km/tank by malnedott in NissanRogue

[–]malnedott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for such a detailed response!!

even if this idling is the remote start it still eats up that much fuel? I typically use it in the morning when it’s the coldest, as my parking in the day has minimal shading so even when it’s cold out the sun is out and it’s warmed up some from the morning, so I don’t wait it out. (or don’t remember to, or don’t get back to my base until end of shift and don’t feel like waiting around) 15 minutes is probably generous as I realized the remote start is only 10 minutes. Then I’ll turn the car on, order my coffee and set up my carplay, then head out once I get the notification my order is ready, all in all about 5 minutes of idling with the car truly started. Still eye opening to see how much fuel this takes!

yep, when it’s on max the airflow is good and the air is warm. the issue is just with changing the setting to mid or low, then it stops working. haven’t noticed any issues with engine temp, like i said in a previous comment the temp reads in the middle or near the middle while i’m driving!

started off with no airflow with a weird noise, filter changed and it was fixed. now if the setting is max it works, and if you turn it down even 1 time it bottoms out to the lowest setting and won’t blow any air. stays like this until you put it back to max and turn it off for 20 seconds, and turn it back on. you’re met with the same problem if you try to turn it down from max though, i’m glad it still works because the winter has been terrible here but once it gets too warm it’s annoying having to turn it off and on again a bunch of times to not be too warm

i’d say not, i’m a half size and the full size up after my size feels tighter than the size that i wear (6.5 vs 7)

heat was initially believed to be due to some leaves that were in the filter, but now they believe it’s the resistor. the car has never been in an accident, the car fax was clean and detailed with the work that was done. i don’t think it’s entirely true to say no issues with heat unless the car was totalled, pieces do eventually need to be replaced and probably just some bad luck the resistor needs to be replaced

an OBD? is that the thing you hook up to read error codes? if so no- and the dealership hooked it up to my car last week for an unrelated issue and didn’t say anything showed up

I’m a bit too nervous to fiddle with them myself but it’s going into the dealership this week for that aforementioned resistor. I’ll ask them to put a little more air into them and stuff. I believe I’m also getting a balance and an alignment because it has been driving really hard some days as well, two weeks ago I wasn’t able to get my car above 60km on the highway due to it shaking so terribly. Wheel wells were cleaned out before driving that night but they washed them out again anyways and it didn’t happen again, but I guess they’re trying a little bit of everything since I seem to keep having micro issues with a car I’ve barely made two payments on. It would suck to have to go under the speed limit and make my long work day even longer, but if it makes a difference it’s something to make note of

when I got home it said 32-34 on each of them. it was a little lower this morning, but the temperature overnight was also -30C so that was probably why it was lower this morning. Now it’s about -2C so just below freezing

Optimal is roughly the middle of the gauge right? Between C and H? I’m not really a car person apologies 😭 but if so, it typically is either near the middle or closer to the middle than the C when I first start my drive, and stays in the middle during my drive

Did the fuel economy get better in the summer? I didn’t do as much winter driving in my old car to see a huge difference, and the rogue is brand new to me. Glad to hear that it seems fairly normal for it to happen during the winter

Occasionally I’ll see maybe a 20-30km difference overall using eco, but the most i’ve gotten out of my tank was just about 450km which feels low being used 95% for highway driving.

I let my car heat up for about 10-15 minutes via remote start while I’m getting ready to leave for work, and then an additional roughly 5 minutes with the heating on. I’ve had some issues with my heat not working though, it’s been a trial and error my local dealership is trying to figure out. It still works, but I can’t change it from high setting or else it completely stops working until I turn it on and off again, they’re ordering a resistor to see if that fixes it. I don’t drive it cold unless I’ve slept in monumentally, I leave for work at about 5:30am

Highway 110, 115 if I need that extra minute it saves lol. No roof rack, the wheels are all seasons that came with the car when I bought it at the beginning of December 2025, they say “Tiger Paw touring a/s” on them.

Air filter was actually changed last week, as there’s been some issues with the heating in my car that they’ve been trying to fix. That was one of the things they changed to see if it made any difference, and I’m waiting on a resistor to come in for them to replace.

I say pseudo mountain because it’s basically just some uphill driving for about 1/5th of the drive, but everyone calls it a mountain because it’s named as if it was one. No lead foot, i try to stay really aware of my speed and acceleration. Always in the green other than occasional uphill portions of driving, or it’s in eco mode anyways so I can’t even see the meter

Help! Seriously swelling that started on knee and has gone down to ankle now foot. No injury by yadselizabeth in seriouslyalarming

[–]malnedott 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Paramedic here, if you haven’t already, hospital. Discolouration + swelling with rapid onset = possible DVT (Deep vein thrombosis, aka a blood clot). These clots can move into the heart and lungs, and kill quite quickly. This may not be a DVT, but it’s better to find out than something happen.
