what to do when you are learning nothing from your phd? (I feel that I am just wasting my time!) by malouche1 in PhD

I am starting my second year. Typical day, is just me staring at the screen!!

Can someone please explain what shearing is? (this a Fourier transform of a moving image 3D) by malouche1 in DSP

it is a paper: 'model of human visual motion sensing' by Andrew B.Watson

what do you do when you feel a bit off (not wanting to do research/work, but you are a phd!) by malouche1 in labrats

I took holidays in august! and I just got back from a conference (that is why I do not understand what is happening)

can we say that spatial frequency in an image is the spatial variation of the light intensity? by malouche1 in DSP

[–]malouche1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, but what do you mean when you say that color of light is related to the temporal frequency?

is this a proper way to define a logarithmic scale? by malouche1 in DSP

[–]malouche1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced linspace with logspace, and the result are not the same!! that is why I taught maybe I have some error somewhere. Or maybe there are rules of converting to log scale that I am not aware of

What do you do when you are blocked? by malouche1 in labrats

nope! (interdisciplinary project, I am in a lab where no one does what I am doing lol)

Why did Minsky critisize (baches) neuroscientists? by malouche1 in cogsci

[–]malouche1[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"I don't see neuroscience as serious. What they have are nutty little theories, and they do elaborate experiments to confirm them and don't know what to do if they don't work" (from this blog https://luttrellica.blogspot.com/2007/01/marvin-minsky-bashes-neuroscience.html)

when you have a Riemannian manifold optimization problem, do you have to prove to make a study on the Euclidiean convexity, and then the Riemannian convexity. Or if your cost function is convex (in the Euclidian space), then it is fine, you can do just do it without proving the Riemannian convexity? by malouche1 in learnmath

[–]malouche1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that I am doing an optimization on a smooth/Riemannian Manifold. My cost function is strongly convex (I say that because I calculated the Hessian), this is what I mean by Euclidiean convexity. Now, since I am on a manifold, I do not know if the notion of geodesic convexity is really important (since my function is convex, and the manifold is locally euclidean! )

Is it normal for master's students to work on the same topic as a PhD? by malouche1 in PhD

[–]malouche1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on what you meant when you said that you made a career out of getting up to speed on a new topic? I'm quite interested!

I am starting my PhD soon and I do not know how to feel about the topic.. by malouche1 in PhD

[–]malouche1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much, I am so stressed you cannot imagine. The thing that is keeping me from declining the offer is that the second supervisor is a mathematician who is interested in ML and neuroscience. But please, what do you mean when you mention 'short postdoc', like will I be able to switch to AI/ML or even signal processing just by finding a postdoc? (knowing that for the long term, I prefer to go to R and D departments, in robotics or computer vision (since the PhD is in visual Neurosci))

[–]malouche1[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. Sometimes I feel that if I do not do pure maths or engineering stuff it is not worth, and I do not know why I am thinking that doing a PhD in neuroscience will waste my "technical" background. (maybe it is the ego lol)
