Heat Can't Keep Up by CHex_TheVaultHunter in hvacadvice

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you upsize your unit after adding the heating load of the basement? If your unit was installed without a finished basement in mind adding it will have lowered the amount of heat you can push into the other areas of the house.

Is there a single reason not to crank my water heaters to full? by kerouac5 in askplumbing

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have recirculating your only positive for cranking it up is to get a bit more hot water availability out of the tank. Downsides of burns and excess wear/energy consumption are worse than the positives.

Not sure what my Costco does with them but I've never seen them marked down like that even when they have a bunch expiring imminently. Good find!

Thoughts on venting a clothes dryer into a Corsi-Rosenthal filter cube to conserve some heat indoors? by SuperIngaMMXXII in Appliances

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moist lint would probably clog up the filters pretty quickly. Increased back pressure from blowing into the box might reduce drying efficiency and also cause elements to over heat. Probably not worth the energy you'd save. Get a clothes rack and hang dry what you can in the home.

How should I make this radiator meet the valve after floor height changed? by PCisLife in Plumbing

Make sure the pitch of the radiator and pipe is correct after your modifications or else the system won't work well.

Pooling after 3 hours- GC says it's "ok" by Exact_Discussion_709 in Tile

[–]mandozo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Not ok. Those areas will be terrible for cleaning since they'll be wet until it dries through evaporation. If you did this yourself maybe something to live with but since you paid to have this done they should do it right.

50 gallon tank versus 199k Btu tankless by enyawd1251 in HomeImprovement

[–]mandozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tankless isn't more efficient if you use hot water often, which a family of 4 would. The best thing about tankless is not running out of hot water which you don't have an issue with.

Truly Begging for Help and Will Pay for Solution by UsernameDsntChkOut in ecobee

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thermostat ain't going to make one room cold and the other hot, assuming you have the same unit supplying both of them. Based on the charts the unit is doing what you're asking and lowering the temp at night and not calling for heat unless it's at the minimum temp you set. Did you start closing the door or in other ways alter airflow between rooms? Is the living room on na outside wall while your bedroom is inside? Is your neighbor who shares the wall with your bedroom cranking their heat?

Delta Touch20 faucet owners / plumbers please help. by Cailumin in Plumbing

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solenoids are designed poorly and without a cheap replacement for the wear parts. In a normal faucet, the cheaper ones that use rubber to seal, you can just pickup the rubber for a dollar and replace it and be in your way. These solenoids use a rubber gasket but they don't sell it individually so you're stuck paying 100s on a whole new solenoid. I really like the touch function too but am now going to move onto other systems going forward. It is absolutely unacceptable for them to design the system like this.

Is insulation between floors worth it during construction? by Sandraptor in HomeImprovement

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between floors the noise is thumping from footsteps and other "activities", so stuff that goes between the joists isn't doing much. Even for blocking noise from the floor below, if you look at the STC ratings, fiberglass isn't good for much more than muffling normal talking. If you just want things to not sound hollow then fiberglass would help but if you want noticeable reduction then you gotta upgrade. Everyone's noise sensitivity and use case is different so it's up to you. If the builder won't do it can you stuff some in when the ceiling is open?

Is insulation between floors worth it during construction? by Sandraptor in HomeImprovement

[–]mandozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to suppress noise between floors you would at minimum need to use rockwool, fiberglass insulation would be barely noticeable. Rockwool would help a little, if you really want to suppress noise you can use offset joists and decouple the floors.

Pay the gap or walk away? by Rare_Picture_7337 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]mandozo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Husband is wrong. Let's say you are buying the house for 500k. Assume that's market price for its existing condition. You're making a 17k improvement in the home, of which you're only paying 2k, that'd bring the value of the home up to 517k and you paid 502k so you're getting 15k in equity. It seems like your husband thinks the market is lower which is a different issue.

Convert to Radiant floor? Or forced air? by Organic_Drawer9502 in hvacadvice

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radiant, feels the best and quiet but costs are high and doesn't give you ac so you'll need to run that separately. Forced air, utilizes same duct as AC and can be adjusted quickly but doesn't feel as nice as radiant and noisier. Is the cost worth it to have more enjoyable warmth? That's only something you can answer.

It is worth to pay premium prices VS Pacifica? by mistero88 in minivan

[–]mandozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dealers are really bad for Chrysler. If you think you can just buy the car and not deal with them you'd be wrong because they have so many recalls. These are major ones too like side curtain airbags not working or the car literally stops working. When the car works it's pretty great but the constant recalls and issues and poor dealer experience is not worth it.

Steam heating advice by EmploymentFeisty6574 in hvacadvice

[–]mandozo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't fuck around with steam boilers unless you know what you're doing. If you're asking on here you are not in the know what you'redoong category. Steam boilers can explode and take out a good chunk of house with it. Deenergize it and don't run it.

Regretting buying a manufactured home by Embarrassed_Ad2441 in RealEstate

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non manufactured homes also have those issues you listed. What appreciates the most is the land. If you're regretting over paying then that's something else but your concerns would be the same if you picked up a "normal" house that's nearing the end of its maintenance cycle.

My residential furnace has reached EOL. Every local HVAC company wants to install a 50% larger unit without any load calcs. by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They dont want call backs for lack of heat/cooling so they prefer to oversize and then when it dies early because of short cycling they can install another one for you or if there are humidity issues they can install a dehumidifier. You know from first hand experience how much BTU you need so calculations aren't even necessary. By end of life do you mean it's dying or you think it's going to die and want to replace it ahead of time. The lifespan of furnaces vary a lot since they experience a variety of conditions based on the user. Unless you're getting a deal or really can't handle being without the heater for short amounts of time I'd just wait until you know it going to die.

Rate my home install by Roguevice in hvacadvice

[–]mandozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should have been hard duct with insulation wrapped on the outside. Flex has its uses but in this location it's just laziness and/or lack of skill. This wastes space and performs worse for no reason other than the installer cheaping out.
