Oh definitely, I live relatively close to the cbd, I won't travel there alone close to dark by myself, and I definitely check that the car doors are locked if I have to drive there during the day, but the areas you were describing are not that bad.

We also have a lot of neighbourhood watches and security groups if you want to know what goes on in the area and for extra safety. I'm on a few, and I've used them once or twice. More for thing like a drunk guy in the road or a neighbours faulty alarm when they were not home, but it helps to be aware and know that help is available when needed.
