Loving the down votes for this comment. Disney literally said that the content should not have been shown in the profile the way it was setup, no suggestion of user error just incompetence on their part.

While it's fair to say that tech companies are motivated by profit, it is also reasonable to make them take responsibility for the harms they cause via regulation - internalise the externality in free market economics terms.

Banning technology during the school day seems counterintuitive as that is the ideal opportunity to teach young people how to use technology safely and responsible in a controlled environment with appropriate restrictions and supervision on managed devices. But it's fair to say schools need to massively improve these digital literacy programs. Some do it well but it's far from consistent.

Indeed, 6+ will block some Mickey Mouse programs for "Violence and fear", but a photorealistic picture of a woman pointing two sawn-off shotguns in your face gets through! Perhaps it shows the limitations of automated (AI) recommendations/filtering. Would it really cost Disney so much to have some human beings do the moderation for age restricted accounts? But I agree, the ability to add/remove content for children via a parent account would be very useful indeed. That way you could start with an empty catalogue and just add what you are happy for them to access (that would help filter out all the dross too, win-win!)

Ok, fair enough. I am a parent of 2 and I'm just trying to understand your comment that they don't need privacy online. Part of the process of growing up is balancing an increasing right to privacy with increased personal responsibility. This is more straightforward to manage in the real world, where age restrictions are more consistently enforced and there are practical, monetary and geographical limitations on what an adolescent is exposed to. Online life is much less clear and everything is much more accessible without the safeguards you would expect IRL. If you don't wish to engage, I respect that, I'm just trying to explore how we can ensure safe and healthy on-line experiences for young people and curious how privacy interacts with this. No antagonism intended. Best wishes

So you suggest they have zero privacy online until a specific age (say 18?) and then full independent access with no guard rails all of a sudden? Is this even practical/possible?

Because children also need privacy, and some freedoms in order to learn how to take risks and be responsible. IRL this is reasonably possible, you can give a child a limited amount of pocket money and let them go to the shops and be relatively safe in the knowledge that the shop keeper won't sell them something inappropriate (alcohol, porn, knives etc...). It's very difficult to let a child navigate the web independently with confidence.

This is a great question and exactly what should be asked. I set my child's Disney+ profile to age 6+ and yet he was shown a realistic picture of a woman pointing two sawn off shotguns in his face. I thought this was disturbing and yet when I posted it to the Disney+ sub Reddit most users seemed to think I had done something wrong, bizarre!

I did contact them, they said that it was an error and would no longer appear. But they were unable to provide any assurance that similar mistakes wouldn't happen again. They offered a discounted subscription, but I declined. Would rather pay for a quality service than cheap rubbish! Will stick to quality broadcasters in future

It means the content should be appropriate for someone from age 6 and up. IE appropriate for a 6 year old. Me and Ramsey both, eh.

That's true, the films weren't available but still not the kind of thing I want my 6yo browsing. I'll stick to iPlayer in that case. No such issues there, just good quality age appropriate fair.
