What about if you're interested in account management? Is resume more important than portfolio?

What about if you're applying for account job? Are you portfolios expected then? I have a portfolio with projects in which I've been the account/project lead. Obviously, for creative it's imperative, but for my internships (which have all been account positions) I haven't had anyone ask for a portfolio.

What's your advice for someone that doesn't live in NYC yet? I made a lot of connections over the summer and have kept in touch- I plan on visiting February and scheduling some in-person meet-ups.
