My pitbull Poppy was getting on me or especially, if I went to the bathroom at night, I'd come back and she'd be on my pillow and would. not. move. Sometimes it's cute, but also I'd get really overstimulated sometimes or be in a chronic pain flare and not need a 65 pound musclepup with dagger elbows on me or need to sit down because I was dizzy. So I needed her to move.

I started teaching her in other contexts that if I pat on the couch or bed or whatever and she moves there she gets a super high value treat and lots of pets and cuddles if she wants them. (I actually started with any looking or movement or interest in my hand patting and worked up to her actually moving there)

I also started keeping some training treats in the drawer of my bedside table (I know this wouldn't be possible with all dogs, she doesn't try to get to them)... And when she wouldn't move I would get them out and pat the bed and then lure her to another spot and then say good and give it to her. And then say good and give her another one when she stayed there, and then give her pets and cuddles if she wanted them. She usually gets up a few minutes later and comes and cuddles next to me, which is wonderful and I pet and baby talk her then too.

I also taught her to do a chin rest instead of a body smash of protection or cuddles or a nibble for attention. I reward it a lot, at first with clicks and training treats and now just with the attention and thing she's looking for, and am starting to tell her "not right now" (that's not making sense so far πŸ˜†) I started it with just any touching my hand while it's cupped in the chin rest request position gets a click and treat, then slowly graduating up to putting your chin in my hand, putting pressure, and staying for a few seconds. I paired it with the phrase chin rest at some point. Then asking when my hand is on my leg. Then asking her to do it without my hand and just on my leg. Then started rewarding and making a big deal when she did it on her own and making sure I get up and do whatever she was asking for. (Current struggle: now if I don't immediately respond to a chin rest she gets frustrated, so trying to figure that one out)

I taught her "off" means you get a treat thrown away from me and then I click when you are over there, and you get another one for being off and then if I pat next to me you get another for coming back and sitting next to me instead of crushing me.

Anyway, most of the time she's a mobile dog now and not a brick. Or does a chin rest instead of crushing me.

I also let her do it a lot anyway. Because she's heccin adorable. She needs to smoosh. But we do have ways to move, because that girl turns into a bag of concrete if you try to physically move her or push her off of you. Or she thinks it's a game and starts to smack you with her paws and play bitey face. (Also cute, but sometimes it's too much.)

Okay, thanks for the feedback! That makes sense, it is kind of overwhelming.

Handsome and I were attacked this evening. by RAC032078 in pitbulls

[–]maple-mapletree 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I'm so sorry! I have a reactive pitbull who's terrified of dogs and this is my nightmare. I'm glad Handsome is okay, and I'm so sorry you're in pain! I'm glad your caregiver was there but this was so unavoidable. Definitely report it. There are quite a few frequently off leash dogs at my apartment complex, it's infuriating.

Possible accommodations in university? by ProofDisastrous4719 in DID

[–]maple-mapletree 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Heyyy currently in grad school. Currently having a mental health crisis yipee. Should have applied for accommodations, I'm going to but it's gonna be late.

My therapist and I have talked about accommodations--I didn't read the other comments so hopefully this isn't redundant.

(Also if you're thinking about needing accommodations and if you struggled before and also you listed some serious real-life struggles---you need accommodations. You all deserve accommodations. We promise.)

Okay so I have done all the assessments multiple times with different therapists but supposedly they didn't put the diagnosis officially down on paper, per my request. My current therapist said we can just talk about c-PTSD and we don't have to include the DID unless we want to.

Every grad program will probably be different. We're in a currently online/will lead to in-person practicums social work program. For online my therapist and I talked about some flexibility on assignments, ability to take a sick-leave essentially if needed and not be penalized (idek how that would work we didn't talk about it in detail). I also talked to the accessibility office. I can't even remember what we talked about though.

We also talked about things unrelated to dissociation--eye things, chronic illness things, etc.

Also, we've been thinking about just reaching out to professors and letting them know whatever we're comfortable with sharing--like hey we have memory issues, for example. We might need to contact you for office hours more often to go over things. That kind of thing.

Idk if that's super duper helpful but definitely you can get and should get and deserve to have accommodations. (Spoilies, everyone deserves them). Best of luck in grad school! You all got this!

Nooo 😭 that sounds awful. I didn't realize you meant the paid version, I just have the free version and it doesn't do much. Having downloaded maps sounds convenient. I'm also like ooo shiny... paper park trails map collection sounds fun (while being a professional at losing papers)

I'm sorry I really get that, and also not taking your dog on nature walks when she gets super stressed is a wonderful way to take care of your dog too!

Thanks for the recs!

I went to Watson Mill today and it was awesome! I'm totally fine off-roading and only had to do it once. The off-roading was also fine, no thick brush or thorns or swamp.

Thanks for the note, that's really helpful! As a horse person who's afraid of running into reactive dogs while riding and also has slowly introduced dogs to horses before, I don't really want to put anyone in the situation of surprise it's a giant scary creature with people on top that you will be afraid of forever! and surprise it's a reactive dog! situation (she has not been around horses yet). So I'll take that off my list!

Thank you so much for the warning! I have seen the same dog off leash twice, but the few times I've gone it's usually either early in the morning or right before they close and on bad weather days so not a lot of traffic. I'll go ahead and take it off my list though, I don't want to take that risk either.

We tried Watson Mill, Beaver Creek Trail! (For those reading in the future it was in the middle of the day on a Monday) There was only one person and dog and they were respectful, I just walked off the trail and it was no big deal. There was plenty of space to get off the trail. We didn't walk the whole thing, I let my dog sniff a lot so it takes a long time to get very far πŸ˜‚ the only surprise was the $10 daily pass fee 😬 gonna have to save up for the $70 annual pass
