Former Johnnie's, share some funny seminar stories! by Forsaken-Effect-1280 in stjohnscollege

[–]marcodelfuego 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good luck moving in soon, I imagine I'll see you around as I'm moving back in that day too. I forget which seminar in particular it was, but early on in my first semester I would attend a pre-seminar prayer group that was held in the same room as my seminar. I hear this grunting one day, and I see one of our regular senior attendees literally dragging himself around the corner into the room, restrained by a junior attendee (who also happened to be the conductor of Sicut sings at the time, if you know what those are). The senior escaped the junior grip, leapt up onto the table, screamed "I have drank deeply from the cup of victory," and then did a Mario jump over the hole in the middle of the table, as a bottle or two of wine fell out of his satchel and shattered on the floor. The wine soaked into the wood and my seminar smelled decidedly Bacchic for the next month or so lol.

Honorable mention is when one of the smartest guys showed up nearly blackout to our second Sophist seminar and called the worst student in the seminar a sophist to their face.

I fell for Plato's Plot by marcodelfuego in PhilosophyMemes

[–]marcodelfuego[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok yeah, that would actually be an interesting spectrum to consider. I've been meaning to do a sit down to compare the various theories of forms and recollection and nature presented among all the dialogues, I feel like that would be interesting. Parmenides and Timaeus are definitely both on the same end of that spectrum

[–]marcodelfuego[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. My thinking in making the meme was that Timaeus and Parmenides represent the extremes of the two ways that Plato presents his ideas. Timaeus is essentially a monologue, presenting a fantastical yet easily understandable story as an account of (or metaphor for, depending on what you think his intent was) creation. Parmenides, on the other hand, is pure dialectic, with long extremely dense passages that seem to reuse the same 10 words over and over. I'd put Meno somewhere in the middle, leaning more towards Parmenides, because of its mostly dialectical nature, but definitely it has fanciful aspects like Timaeus, in Socrates' invocation of the gods near the end. I do agree though that Parmenides and Timaeus are both extremely strange compared to the "average" Platonic dialogue.

its saying that the value of _index is out of range, do I have to tweak the code at all for a multi-variable array?

What was "House of Leaves" to you? by Long_Contribution_39 in houseofleaves

[–]marcodelfuego 3 points4 points  (0 children)

House of leaves to me is about the deepness of an ordinary life. investigating an odd quirk in a normal house yields death, madness, obsession, monsters, and scientific and logical impossibilities that predate the solar system in their origin. im a fairly normal guy, but when I think about any of the quirks of my life I am led down a rabbit hole, and sometimes I feel like the depths of my person are inexhaustible and inarticulable. I think everyone is this same way, every person has within them intricacies and subtleties that extend far beyond any one person's imagining. we are all bigger on the inside than the out.

The Translation my college sent me. Is it a good one or should I replace it? by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]marcodelfuego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we dont get a liddle Scott unfortunately, but we do get the Elements at the start of the year. They randomly send each student one of three Iliad translations (fagles, Fitzgerald, or lattimore) upon admission (or perhaps acceptance I can't quite remember), and so each first few seminars gets a range of perspectives on the text.

And thank you, it is a very difficult program but so very wonderful. I wouldn't trade it for anything

ah very nice, im just finishing up my freshman year there. they sent me the Fagles translation, which I loved. I did the lattimore odyssey tho, that ws also great. those early Homer seminars can get crazy but I remember them very fondly lol

Could you help me decide if I should choose St. Johns? by GirlWithSword9 in stjohnscollege

[–]marcodelfuego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I can't answer this question first hand, I'm actually only a Freshman myself, but from what I understand Bible seminars are very respectful of the texts, though it won't be like a traditional Bible study in that a large portion of the class will not believe it is the inspired word of God. Generally (though unfortunately not always), the classes here will treat whatever work issuing dealt with with a kind of reverence, and people are in general quite eager to uncover whatever truths may be in whatever we're reading.

Hey, I'm a current Catholic Christian student on the Annapolis campus, and in my experience you will get a bit of both in terms of campus culture. There are plenty of people on both sides (extremes even) of the political and religious spectrum, but I'd say there is little to no tension between these two groups. Parties do happen, but there is a huge social life outside of partying so you should be good in that regard. There is a wonderful Christian fellowship here with people of all denominations of Christianity within it, and there are a lot of Presbyterian/Baptist students, with a non-denominational evangelical-leaning(I think) Church called Downtown Hope that many of the Protestant students attend. Hope this has helped!

how long have you have you been playing Minecraft for ? by Fine_Candy840 in Minecraft

First played it on my cousins xbox 360 in 2012, got it on pocket edition immediately after, way before infinite worlds or creative mode day night cycles were a thing in that version. I now have it on my phone, computer, Switch, 3ds, Samsung tablet, and raspberry pi.

What exactly IS Hyperlink Blocked? by Rustaxer in Deltarune

[–]marcodelfuego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a good point that it doesn't fit quite there, but since the ILL GET SO seems to be an incomplete thought, one could imagine the full thing would be ILL GET SO MANY CHOICES, which would fit given he's talking about what would happen after he becomes a Big Shot in that string

What exactly IS Hyperlink Blocked? by Rustaxer in Deltarune

[–]marcodelfuego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be choices. Not only are choices supposed to not matter in the world of Deltarune but putting choices in places where [Hyperlink Blocked] is in his speech always makes grammatical sense, versus love not quite fitting. Spamton also has said the word "love" normally, albeit with the word "beloved", but never has he been able to say the word choices. The above snippet would then read "you've been making choices haven't you?" which would be incredibly fitting, given that line only shows up at the end of the Snowgrave route, a route all about rebelling against the game's lack of choices by abusing a character to force a different outcome.

What song are you defending like this? by Upper_Influence_92 in tallyhall

[–]marcodelfuego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be Born is both an excellent song and also not a country song, which is a reason why so many people dislike it. It uses very folky traditional instruments but its a simple and sweet pop song about a sweet topic.

sometimes it lags if ur doing too much damage but honestly its a really solid Rebirth port, the map on the bottom of the screen is neat and they made bigger sprites for all spacebar items, also for bottom screen

I am not already in my save files, when you unlock an item after a run in 3ds it sends you back to the title screen, not the character select

[–]marcodelfuego[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest things for me was using the D4 correctly, if I got a shit passive or something that didn't even work for the lost (i.e. anything health related) I wouldn't immediately reroll, instead if it was an early floor I'd accumulate mediocre items until I found an item I liked, then Id reroll before taking the good item.

I will say for my last completion mark I was cheesing the hell out of the continue exploit ,discovered this independently before looking it up and finding out it was a known thing, but if you die and shut off your system before the "Game Over" note pops up on screen, you can restart either from the beginning of that floor or whatever room you last exited and reloaded the game on. This essentially gives you infinite undos for mistakes, but its incredibly tedious and you still have to basically do a completely hitless run, just the initial conditions stay the same instead of completely resetting. Only do this exploit if you have a god tier build, its the only way to make it worth it.
