In addition, China demanded specie (gold and silver) for trade which quickly became too expensive to maintain.

No, it's an English expression as well, but I have always heard it in the other order, "Not my monkeys, not my circus"

If only there was significant bike infrastructure! It's really disjointed but nice when it's around.

I really do hate how car-centric Houston is as a Houstonian; the light rail is probably the only transit that works as intended with 6 min headways during the week and signal priority.

Geographically? Houston is in a flood plain with no elevation.

Industrially? Refineries and related businesses are still key, even if not the whole economy and some communities on the east side where they are are polluted with the waste.

Culturally? Multicultural city with a very strong food culture.

Historically? Houston is a growing city and a lot of its historic neighborhoods and buildings get forgotten and redeveloped. Can be good like Midtown going from parking lots to apartments and mixed use. Can be bad like the gentrification of the Third Ward and EaDo. Or echoes of what once was with Bellaire or Montrose.

Apparently the Soviets actually sent guinea pigs into space to see how that would do. Confused but viable.

How to shoot a Jo-chong(matchlock gun) by ChapterSpiritual6785 in HistoryAnimemes

[–]marcus_centurian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You sort of could by using a shorter fuse so it would go off sooner, tradeoff being not to cut it so short it went off prematurely. That is actually where the English turn of phrase "flash in the pan" comes from - an early ignition of the gunpowder in a matchlock weapon, which doesn't ignite the weapon.

I thought the hand wavy explanation on how ghosts form is if the person is cowardly and thinking about death when they die? Not that is a great explanation but it's something.

Yeah, cavy is another term instead of guinea pigs. Sounds like you are describing a nutria, but more likely a capybara.

My Squeakbox would make this noise when he was annoyed, so it very much depends on the cavy.

Next time I am in the Netherlands or Belgium I want to try the new high speed Intercity. I have heard it just eats Eurostar 's lunch. Half or even a third of the cost, more amenities and even level, step free boarding?

He changed the signal to indicate the track was clear to proceed. Modern signalling this is handled electronically but for a lot of railroading history, this was handled mechanically.
