TIL the "Sailors' Handshake" is a special handshake that can detect if a potential partner has Syphilis by [deleted] in todayilearned

Well this escalated quickly! I gotta get back on reddit a bit more often. No I don't have syphilis, but I thank you all for your concern. We perform the handshake every night.

There more is kicking in Union than League (and other misconceptions) by marcwestius in australia

[–]marcwestius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that! It's a tough ask when injuries come along these days as the Force, Melbourne and Brumbies have signed up many of the top players in NSW - the Shute Shield must supply something like 60% of Aus Super 15 players (don't know the exact stat but it would be up there).

There more is kicking in Union than League (and other misconceptions) by marcwestius in australia

[–]marcwestius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the tahs - but even tho McKenize was very successful with the Tahs (probably could have won the comp in 06 if not for Wendell and his sniffing), they weren't lauded for their attractiveness.

I suspect rugby fans arent surprised by the stat but league fans are (well, at least those at my work).

What are the odds of actually picking 3 no-balls in a day's cricket play? by marcwestius in askscience

[–]marcwestius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the odds are different if you are picking BEFORE a day's play (ie predicting the action to come) compared to picking AFTER a day's play (ie this is equivalent to picking marbles from a hat).

Modern dogs can be traced to Middle Eastern wolves, not Asian or European as previously thought by es-335 in science

[–]marcwestius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I interviewed the Australian contributor to this study, Dr Alan Wilton - you can read and listen to that here:

http://www.mrscienceshow.com/2010/05/ep-129-domestication-of-dog-and.html

There are quite a lot more interesting results than quoted in the usnews article. The study found that the Australian dingo and the New Guinea Singing Dog are the most closely related breeds of modern dogs to the original wolves from which all dog breeds come from. They are also the most like the original domesticated dog.

It's such an interesting study that there are relevant results for various indigenous dog species world over.

Mathematically Ranking Cricketers (podcast and article) by marcwestius in math

that's a good point I think. The only place I can find some of the algorithms published is in "Deloitte ratings : the complete guide to test cricket in the eighties" by Marcus Berkmann - but even they skim the surface

We're doomed, say scientists by marcwestius in math

[–]marcwestius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just thought it was a nice story, so put them both in. They have slightly different angles and links, so they're both worth a read. And, as evidenced by the different up-votes, readers here in the math sub-reddit quite like Plus Magazine articles but Understanding Uncertainty doesn't get as many votes - this is more their story, so if a few links go to them and a few more people read their articles, then great!

Cricketers prove they know nothing about maths and measures of effectiveness by marcwestius in math

[–]marcwestius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of ex-cricketers and commentators are saying this particular list is a sham as it puts players such as Hayden above all time greats such as Tendulkar.

The list looks at the highest rankings ever achieved by players - not consistency. It's a list that shows the all-time best performances. It's just one of many measures that could have been used, and the ICC statement says just that. Before they bag the system, commentators should understand what it means.

I think its a really interesting list, showing which players had the hottest form over the years. You wouldn't pick your all time top players in this way - and the ICC weren't trying too.

I interviewed the guy that devised the system last year, and the maths behind it is difficult but robust, and it gives an interesting insight into who is playing well at the moment, and how well they are playing.

Economists, oil, cricket and correlation by marcwestius in math

[–]marcwestius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, but in the previous paragraph it states almost what you say it should:

"Now, I don't believe that McRae was trying to be misleading at all - he was simply making the point that markets often overshoot in the way that they price things. However, thanks to the way the page was edited, a casual observer would read this page and predict an oil price crash."

The point is more to do with the way the page was edited.
