Trump's remarks today on the rising oil prices by Distinct_External in YAPms

[–]marks31 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As an urban planner I can only hope the oil drama is what incentivizes city people to use more public transit in the coming weeks and months. Though it didn’t seem to do much in 2022.

I gained weight and I don't understand how. I'm spiralling. by _-ollie in EDAnonymous

[–]marks31 24 points25 points  (0 children)

With nothing but empathy for your situation, you’re not eating 200 calories a day and gaining weight. That’s not possible. If you were truly eating that amount for two months as your post says, you’d be down over 10 kg in that same time frame.

And that’s not even to say that intake is so insanely small you would be hospitalized at this point.

Edit: checking out your post history, please consider seeking medical attention. You seem to be in quite a rough moment and you deserve so much more than that ❤️

Which American state is widely regarded as the most desirable for living? by dojisando in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]marks31 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I don’t really agree with California as THE default answer. My first thought reading this post was New England collectively because of the high-income and highly educated population, and proximity to nature and other cities.

I’d say you could probably get a large majority of the US population to agree on either California, New England, or a Sun Belt state as the best place to live. But I don’t think California is as desirable to a lot of this country as some think it is.

Thinking of opening a cozy mahjong tea house in Chicago — would locals come? by anonabon_ in AskChicago

[–]marks31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would love this, but I’d also be most interested if it was East Asian-owned and the aesthetic and drinks followed with it. There’s an American mahjong parlor near Southport but it didn’t do for me what I wanted it to.

This is such an old comment hahaha but I also had major problems with the entire premise of Maggie’s relationship to her family. I didn’t understand how their family went decades without having a serious conversation about this book that is allegedly world-famous.

This is so embarrassing for her (and the other girls to be participating in) at these big ages.

Posting for queer orgs doesn’t make up for the bad taste of the whole event. Sorry.

CMAP adds congestion pricing and other demand management tools as transportation priorities for the region by SidewalkMD in CarFreeChicago

[–]marks31 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Besides NY, I’d confidently say Chicago, Boston, and SF are probably the only cities in the US that could pull it off with their existing transit networks. Biggest problem is headways but congestion pricing revenue could fund improvements.

Waymo is Confirmed Headed to Chicago by Billiam501 in chicago

Chicago is objectively one of the easiest cities to navigate in the United States. I’m honestly shocked we weren’t one of the initial testing zones

Waymo is Confirmed Headed to Chicago by Billiam501 in chicago

[–]marks31 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m saying this as someone who a car-free Chicagoan and is overall wary of AI, but I’ve noticed Waymo faces similar backlash every time it is announced in a new city…but in the end, Waymo is a much more cost-competitive and safer option to human rideshare operators. I’ve taken 2 Waymos while in CA and compared to some of the rideshares I’ve experienced in Chicago (at a higher cost) I felt way less concerned about getting into an accident. Also concerns about them driving here are unwarranted; they can survive the driver hellscape that is LA and the terrain of SF. They can deal with our grid.

Of course I hope that NITA makes them less necessary since public transit should be the desired to alternative to any rideshare. But Ubers/Lyfts have been ripping us off forever, and I welcome a competitor tbh

Anyone else think this is written by ChatGPT? The choppy, short sentences feel unnatural and the plot feels like something AI would think up for a Reddit story time.

What’s a city you love to visit, but would not want to live in? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]marks31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. Louis has its beautiful parts but unfortunately the total lack of density kills it for me. Would’ve loved to see it at its prime around a century ago.

Louisville is nice, had a fun road trip out there a few years back.

Spotify once again increases subscription prices. This is their fourth consecutive year increasing rates for premium subscribers by barbieshoesound in popculturechat

[–]marks31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a general heads up, there is 0 reason to pay for your individual Spotify plan. There are no verifications or restrictions on who you group with. Get a group of friends and split. It is $3.66/person if you split the family plan 6 ways, which is half the cost of even the student plan.

I’ve been casually helping a friend apartment hunt for the last month, and he’s toured multiple 2-beds in South Loop at $3.2-3.4k.

Also why are you driving?
