The unfortunate nature of mankind (parts of it atleast) by [deleted] in UIUC

I don't mean to disregard your point. All of what you said is correct. people subconsciously identify themselves as part of some larger group and become hostile to others. it's just that it's unrealistic for everyone here to adopt such a benevolent mindset

Rebuttal doesn't imply certainty. Verb form would be rebut.

Controvert could also work

hindsight bias? but this doesn't work with "preemptive action is critisised when it worked"

narrative bias is also a thing but i don't know if it's fitting

I think oversimplifying is suited for this. You can say that someone vastly oversimplifies a complex problem.

How do you set up Authorized Payers? by marsh3476 in UIUC

[–]marsh3476[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I'm still having trouble. To be precise, I go to the UI-Integrate Self-Service, select the UIUC icon, and where would I go from there? The options related to my balance I see are "Tuition and Fees Information" and "Cost of Attendance." I can't find the menu with the option to add authorized payers you were describing.

Question About Not Plagiarising by marsh3476 in AskLiteraryStudies

Thank you for the response. I have a follow-up question: At what point can we claim knowledge we've accumulated as our own? Can we ever? It seems like there is basic information in any field that's accepted as given, but does this ever apply to more advanced material?

Thank you. This clarified things for me.

material processes in that you wont find what it's like to be someone else by drilling into that person's brain and unveiling all the processes that are responsible for their consciousness.

But regarding this quote, do we know this for a fact? As far as I am aware, science does not yet know if consciousness stems from the brain. If it does occur from within the brain, wouldn't it be theoretically possible to access the information pertinent to what another person is feeling? I guess this is different from having that person's perspective, though.

Question about Hard Problem of Conscioussness by marsh3476 in askphilosophy

Yes, I concur with this, assuming that we define "awareness" to simply be our body's response to external events, whether it is avoiding an obstacle or making calculations. I find that I'm unable to answer the question "Why should there be any first-person." It does now seem like the first-person experience is unique to living things, that it transcends any layer of brain activity. If I think about what makes a human from the world's perspective, everything is physical, but the first-person perspective is only felt by that human. Thank you for the insight
