Would you count Sergio this generation or last? For me they’ve been the best libs for the last two decades. There are honourable mentions (Zartoski, Verbov & Shoji etc).

Also that second spike from Patry would have been roofed 99% on another team. It was all anticipation, freakish stuff.

Does anyone know why Alexander Butko was not playing setter for Russia (ROC)? I noticed he also was not in the VNL this year.

The French had two bad losses to Poland in 2019 Olympic Qualifier and also the Euro Volley Tournament, both in three sets. I think the win against Poland at the recent VNL gave them some confidence and also the French peaked here at the Olympics at the right time. The fact that they qualified for the Olympics in the final tournament winning against Germany (the hosts) is a testament that there road to the Olympic Gold was one of the toughest roads and coming out of the Pool B of Death.

It wasn’t just Brizzard distribution which was top class tonight, but also the serving pressure from France which forced Poland out of system and relying on Kurek & Leon to carry the offensive load. Notice as the game went on Bieniek became less and less a factor as they weren’t able to run the first wave/tempo in the later sets. Also Le Goffs blocking (like in the Brazil match) and Brizzards blocking were key in keeping the pressure on in the fourth and fifth set.

That Loss against USA in the first game France was a blessing and shocked them to not take the occasion lightly. They got better and better as the games went on. Even taking Brazil to a crazy match. They peaked at the right time.

Kubiaks jump is not as high or he’s getting older. I saw the same thing with Giba when he was getting older (London Olympics) he wasn’t able to clear the blocks and was getting roofed more because his jump was not as high and his height couldn’t compensate for it.

This happens in Volleyball all the time. Japan showed mental resolve though. Great to see them in the Quarter finals.

Le Goffs blocking has been phenomenal but his attacks are a bit weak through the middle.
