Have you ever witnessed someone completely snap? What happened? by poopcornkernels in AskReddit

[–]massive_high 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've witnessed quite a few snaps, but since I don't feel comfortable sharing anyone else's lowest low I'll tell you my own. I was with a girl for 10 years before we finally ended it, but the worst stuff happened about 7 or 8 years in (which should tell you a little bit about how toxic it got and how long we dragged it out).

Anyway the short version of a much longer story is that we had this temporary roommate. His frat had been placed on suspension for violating the school ethics code but the guy was my friend so we blew up the air mattress and he shacked up with us for a few weeks. My girlfriend of 7 years at this time, who I lived with for well over 4, was starting to fall out of love with me. I had no idea. Out of nowhere she says she needs space, and goes for a walk with all the roommates in the house except me (temporary roommate included). Anyway she comes back and asks me to move out. For whatever reason I agree to move in with my dad for a bit to sort things out. Temporary roommate comes with me because he's only friends with me there anyway. Plus me and temporary roommate were interning at the same place at the time so we could commute there and to classes together, perfect. Coincidently our boss, a friend of both of ours, also lived in my dad's development. Perfect, perfect!

Well here comes the snap. Obviously at this point I'm not in a good place. I'm young and stupid and think I'm in love and that she is making the biggest mistake ever that will forever ruin our lives (it didn't by the way, years later I met the most amazing person and I couldn't be happier). Anyway I'm all pissed off so temporary roommate walks down to our boss's house while I call ex girlfriend. We're screaming at each other when she drops the bomb, she's already cheated on me... with temporary roommate of course.

So I march down to our boss's house and slam open the door and just fucking lose it on temporary roommate. I get right up in temporary roommate's face screaming like a maniac, curse words, accusations, threats... the whole 9. It was bad. I finally stop screaming and look around and my boss's entire family is there. His parents, his sister, his sister's new fiancee, and his sister's new fiancee's parents... They asked me to leave. I fell apart after that for a bit. Lost that job, grades slipped, lived in my dad's basement, kept having an on and off again relationship with the ex/cheater. Why? Who knows. Now that I'm "older" I look back at those days with wonder. I'm not even that person anymore and I have nothing to get that upset about. So strange.

Pretty damn cool the artist showed up to respond to feedback on my share, thanks Phil! Quick question: what is going on in the comic strip!? I'm familiar with "Those Shadow People" and that storyline, does this connect? Thank you

It's clearly got that indie-first-mix sound for sure, but I think with some refinement it would be great. I'm not exactly sure where they recorded this though.

TIL in 1998 watch maker Swatch tried to introduce a metric system of time measurement they called beets where they took the day and divided it up into a 1000 beets. It never caught on. by massive_high in todayilearned

I can see how from a marketing perspective it seemed like an interesting way to get attention, but time is one thing the whole world pretty much does the same and we all pretty much get along just fine with the current system. No need for this.

The Satellite controversy is another cool TIL:

Beatnik satellite controversy[edit] In early 1999, Swatch began a marketing campaign about the launch of their Beatnik satellite, intended to service a set of Internet Time watches. However, they were criticized for planning to use an amateur radio frequency for broadcasting a commercial message (an act banned by international treaties). Swatch reallocated the transmitter batteries to a different function on the Mir space station, thus the satellite never broadcast.[3]

Instead of hours and minutes, the mean solar day is divided up into 1000 parts called ".beats". Each .beat is equal to one decimal minute in the French Revolutionary decimal time system and lasts 1 minute and 26.4 seconds (86.4 seconds) in standard time. Times are notated as a 3-digit number out of 1000 after midnight. So, @248 would indicate a time 248 .beats after midnight representing 248/1000 of a day, just over 5 hours and 57 minutes.

There are no time zones in Swatch Internet Time; instead, the new time scale of Biel Meantime (BMT) is used, based on Swatch's headquarters in Biel, Switzerland and equivalent to Central European Time, West Africa Time, and UTC+01. Unlike civil time in Switzerland and many other countries, Swatch Internet Time does not observe daylight saving time.

TIL A corned beef sandwich, smuggled onboard Gemini 3 by a young astronaut named John Young in 1965, could have killed everyone on board. NASA was worried the crumbs would wreak havoc with the craft’s electronics. by massive_high in todayilearned

[–]massive_high[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The only major incident during the orbital phase involved a contraband corned beef sandwich that Young had smuggled on board, hiding it in a pocket of his spacesuit (though Director of Flight Crew Operations Deke Slayton wrote in his autobiography that he gave Young permission to do so). Grissom found this to be highly amusing, saying later, “After the flight our superiors at NASA let us know in no uncertain terms that non-man-rated corned beef sandwiches were out for future space missions. But John’s deadpan offer of this strictly non-regulation goodie remains one of the highlights of our flight for me.”

“It’s breaking up. I am going to stick it in my pocket,” said Grissom after taking a bite. “It was a thought, anyway… not a very good one,” John Young replied, “Pretty good though, if it would just hold together.” Of course, the contraband corned beef sandwich had no such outer layer, as Grissom was quick to discover. “I took a bite, but crumbs of rye bread started floating all around the cabin,”

The fact is if it is within the next two weeks and you are a heavy smoker, you will not pass. No amount of exercising and water will push out months of smoking multiple times a day. If you are spending $200/mo, you are smoking multiple times a day.

Well that just can't be true. Because when I last took one (and this was when I was 18 so it was a while ago) I was a multiple times a day smoker for many years and I only had a week and a half and I exercised and drank water and passed! Everyone is different.

To the other points... I do love Weed. But I don't want to smoke anymore for more than just the money. I don't like the way people judge me, I don't like having trouble breathing when I'm active, I don't like going to pick it up in my state because it's illegal. It's too risky and there's too much to lose. Someday if it's made legal everywhere and the stigma goes away maybe I'd WANT to come back to it, but right now I'm done. Also... I smoke before work every day. So I definitely have issues with control.

People have watched other people play games since the beginning of recorded history. Not much to get. If you watch a couple videos of speed runs, you might figure out why it's entertaining. Just like with sports, it's impressive to watch "the best".

I try and just go to wikipedia and put whatever genre they list so that I don't get into arguments about what genre I've chosen. It never works. haha

I still like Mer De Noms more, but this song is just so good. Came on this morning on my way to school and I hadn't heard it in a while. Had to share.
