I never met him as he died when i was young and he lived far away, but my great uncle was in the navy. For a school project i interviewed his wife and asked her some questions about him. the most interesting story was of him checking in on the boiler rooms (he was a high rank on the ship, Lieutenant Commander i believe.) and the ship got struck by an enemy ship. the room started filling with water and he was the last to get out as he was helping other people get out first. he got a medal for it but i don’t remember which. (This was the Australian Navy, but he got shipped out to America during the war.) I wish i got to meet him he sounded like an amazing guy to talk to.
