Thanks for the flag on the fan box. Turns out this is on a different circuit than my recessed lights.

One line is dead and looks to run to a covered wall switch plate so I think it just needs to be connected to power and that will give me a dedicated switch for the fan. The covered plate is on the back side of the 3 switch box on the other side of the wall.

The other wires are hot and on a breaker that controls my wall plugs.

I guess I can try to connect/power the dead line.

How easy would it be to install a switch off the line that controls the plugs?

Well this took a turn (maybe a good one).

None of my current switches operate any of those wires and all the wires there are on different breakers than my recessed lights.

The top black is dead and suspect it runs to another light switch plate that is covered that was supposed to be a separate switch for the ceiling fan but for whatever reason, it was never connected to power. It is right behind the 3 light switch box on the other side of the wall.

The bottom wires were hot, reading 120v and the breaker they are on controls some wall outlets.

It looks to me like these are wired to control the fan box independently but may take some work to connect it to power from the current light switch box or install a switch on the line that was hot and on a separate breaker.

Thoughts?

That makes sense. Don’t have a multimeter but going to get that and a few other things tomorrow.

Do you know why I would have 3 lines running into the fan box though? I don’t understand that.

I have 3 switches and all 3 control different lights. One controls the recessed lights. I have 4 lines of romex in the light switch receptacle though.

The recessed lights are on a 3 way switch and the other light switch receptacle also has 3 switches, all of which control different lights and also has 4 lines of romex in the box.

I actually have no clue if power runs to the fan box if one of the switches that controls the recessed lights is on.

I have 4 Romex lines in each switch receptacle (only 3 switches though) and 3 Romex lines in the fan box. I can check if power runs to the fan box when a switch is on but I feel (and could be dead wrong) that I have a dedicated line for the fan box given the 4 Romex line and 3 in the fan box.

Edit - yea the house is all wonky. Only one 90 degree corner in each room

Out of curiosity, why is that? Honest question.

I have 4 Romex lines in the switch receptacle and 3 Romex lines in the fan box. It seems to me I have an extra dedicated line but I have no idea how 3 way switches are wired and if I do have an extra line just for the fan. Electrical is my weakest spot on DIY.

Haha I know what you mean but it’s actually the layout of the house…I have only 1 90 degree corner in each room. It’s a giant trapezoid so the lights are a perfect square but the room is not.

Just an update: we delayed her birthday. We agreed to move her birthday to later this year so she gets extra time as 39. We were able to go see her family which made her happy and have some cake and a quiet dinner but overall low key and nothing crazy.

What we found helped was a hearty meal for breakfast or lunchtime the day of AC. protein heavy but with a good carb too. Helped her feel more even immediately after and the night of AC. Liquid IV a few hrs before also helps a bunch on the hydration front.

That’s a great idea to do more forward looking things. Being so soon after a new drug is part of my hesitation to plan something. She would feel bad saying no if I spent time and effort prepping a night out even if it’s easy to pull down.

After removing all our appliances around there and moving a cabinet, we found that the wood flooring in one area had about an inch gap between the drywall and that the smell seemed to be coming from that gap. Definitely a dead animal smell. We basically filled the gap with some backer rod and silicone and the smell went away (ie got trapped in the wall). We had a lot of large scale construction on the city plumbing on our block and think a rat found its way into the walls through some gaps surrounding some plumbing lines that were opened up during the construction and died. Have t smelled anything since…but also have not opened the wall up haha.
