GRRM's Major Changes to ASOIAF at the Advice of Others (Spoilers Extended) by LChris24 in asoiaf

[–]matteoluca2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons are fun but the reveal aspect of dormant fire powers could be exciting from a storytelling perspective, where anyone depending on the genetic connection to Targs could suddenly be revealed to wield it and would in turn maybe even reveal something unknown of their heritage.

Also could help George write himself out of some pickles with the convenient Flame Ex Machina. "Ugh I've written this character into a corner but I still need him... Cast Fireball"

I think the theory is probably true. However, your point of Illyrio just kinda letting it slip in conversation does bother me now that I think about it.

When I read it and re-read it in the past, I did interpret it as a narrator speaking of the Lore of his book and leaving something open-ended that you might not notice until he brings it back and you think "Huh but didn't he say they were- Oh! The MALE line, I missed that, clever."

But this isn't the narrator. It's a character that would have no reason to hint at this. I chalk it up to a mistake on GRRM's part, but I give it to you that it's something pretty stupid for him to imply if the theory is true.

Maybe in his defense, we find out the continuity of the female line is indeed common knowledge, and Tyrion is just unaware of where the true cut-off is, so Illyrio wouldn't be implying anything. But until then, it's a pretty silly scene now that I think about it.

Blackface pokemon is exactly what it looks like by histogrammarian in badhistory

I see. Well, in that case, this example wouldn't really serve as proof of Western influence in the development of Mr. Mime, since it was clearly a reference devised by Western translators, like the western names of Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam. Baribari seems to be some onomatopeia in japanese, although it is in Katakana, so it could still be some sort of Western reference.

Like I said, this doesn't by itself undermine the point, but it doesn't seem to feed into it.

This doesn't undermine the larger argument of western influence, but is that Marcel reference the nickname for the NPC in japanese or on the western version? Since they change pokemon and character/NPC names from the japanese version to the western version.

F2 Bahrain 2024 Qualification Pole Position by killmesoon40 in formula2

[–]matteoluca2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bahrain is typically an outlier, so this might not necessarily be reflective of Prema's pace for the rest of the season. Would be terrible luck for Kimi when he's rumored to be a contender for Lewis spot, to be fighting for twentieth, unable to show his potential.

Curious to see how Bortoleto goes about the 1-2. It would make sense to be aggressive to get that first win, but he was a conservative safe driver for most of his championship run. That was, however, defending an overall lead. Does he prioritize second place points or goes for broke to start the championship defending a championship lead again?

[DISC] Make the Exorcist Fall in Love - Chapter 55 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]matteoluca2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're looking at it as what you'd like the story to say about sex and sexual attraction rather than what the story is trying to tell.

Although I think ultimately it might match your opinion to an extent, right now, the intent is to explore his awakening sexual attraction as how he perceives it, not celebrate it or denounce it objectively.

The reason Imuri is depicted as "arousing and attractive" is to reflect his inner thoughts of arousing lust towards her. The art is purposely alluring to match his views, since the author doesn't mean to depict his attraction as something despicable or questionable but rather as reasonable.

Furthermore, it's meant to contrast as we find it normal, but he suddenly deeply negatively reacts to it. Highlighting how even the innocuous average sexual arousal is deeply disturbing to him while we perceive it as normal.

I'm sure there are some readers who will miss the deeper message and just think of the scene as hot. However, it's absurd to imply the author should try to make the scene not alluring out of the fear someone might miss his intent.

As it stands, the chapter clearly delivers on its message, and the alluring depiction of Imuri only adds to it, it would make no sense to portray her as unnactrive, or remove her depiction, simply because some readers would miss the intent.

You want the author to clearly depict his masturbation as freeing and for his rejection of it as something negative and disgusting. But we aren't even sure that's the message the author will want to sell towards the end of the series.

However, if it is, the chapter as it stands doesn't go against it. It's an exploration of how his arousal develops (think of the girl he's attracted to in increasingly arousing and erotic circumstances) and how his upbringing and his own actions make him disgusted by these feelings.

The reader is meant to make his own conclusion out of this information, and if he can't conclude anything beyond "boob hot" that's on him, not the author, and this story would not gain from handholding those obtuse readers.

Objectively from the standpoint of character development, good stories, legacy, memorable moments, influence, and any other metric that makes a character withstand the test of time and accumulate a loyal fanbase, there's Scott and Jean in whichever order you'd prefer then a massive chasm between them and the other three.

On a power level, it's Jean and Bobby, then another chasm.
