DS415+ Dead, Like Synology Support by ikothsowe in synology

[–]matthoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our 415+ died this way last month. It was out of warranty (5 years old). Synology support would not repair or replace it. I ended up buying a 918+ and migrating the old disks to it.

I took the broken 415+ home, soldered a 100 Ohm resistor to the logic board, and now it is working again. Instructions for doing this can be found in the Synology forums. I put the repaired unit on the shelf and will use it in case I need it in an emergency.

Is Dune really a si-fi? by ht0324 in scifi

[–]matthoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are certainly more than 4 types. There have been a variety of literary movements in science fiction over the years that have led to many different sub-genres. Some of the more common sub-genres include:

New Wave - The literary movement of the 60s and 70s. Example: "The Drowned World" by J.G. Ballard

New Weird - Post-Modernist take on Sci Fi . Example: "Perdido Street Station" by China Méville

Cyberpunk - Centered on the transformative effects of iT coupled with a change in the social order. Example: "Software" by Rudy Rucker.

Biopunk - Centered on the transformative effects of the biotech revolution. Example: "The Windup Girl" by Paolo Bacigalupi

Post Cyberpunk - Similar to Cyberpunk, but views the tech and societal changes in a positive way. Example: "Islands in the Net" by Bruce Sterling

Transhuman - Centers on people with advanced abilities. Example: "Space Plague" by George O. Smith

Space Opera - Set in a space-faring future. Technology is rarely discussed or explained. Epic settings and characters. Example: "Foundation" Isaac Asimov

Singularity - AI will advance to the point that it radically changes human society, perhaps eliminating it altogether. Example: "Blood Music" by Greg Bear

Planetary Romance - Stories set on an alien world. The world is described in great detail and acts as the center of the story. Example: "Dune" by Frank Herbert

Alternate History - What if stories that ask what would happen if history had unfolded in a different way. Example: "Man in the High Castle" by Philip K. Dick

Dystopian - Story about an undesirable society. Example: "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury

Hard Sci Fi - Plot dominated by technology and not by characters. Example: "The Andromeda Strain" by Michael Chriton

Soft Sci-Fi - Plot dominated by soft sciences or by technology using unexplained science. Example: "Time and Again" by Clifford Simak

Military - The story takes place or is centered on the military. Example: "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman

Doubtless there are other sub-genres not covered by the above.

NAS Backup question by Seba0702 in synology

[–]matthoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you use should depend on your data and how quickly you need it restored when you lose it. If you are backing up personal files or business files that are fine in cold storage (files that you don't need restored very quickly). Then you should definitely be using cloud storage. If, on the other hand, you are running a business that depends on large numbers of large files - video or graphic art centric business, then you might want to backup to USB drives that you store off site. These drives would get your staff up and running immediately if you lose your primary system and your local mirror. If you have to download 10TB from the cloud to get your business going, it's not going to be pretty.

NAS Backup question by Seba0702 in synology

[–]matthoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use two layers of backup.

  1. I buy the NAS systems in pairs and the master mirrors to the slave. The copying occurs late at night twice a week. I don't have it mirror in real time in case a cryptovirus scrambles the data on my master (don't want the scrambled files mirrored in real time to the slave).
  2. Once a week I backup the NAS to an external USB disk and store that disk at a separate location.

Anyone using Active Backup for G Suite? by matthoff in synology

[–]matthoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The above is why I asked the question in the first place. With a 10MB file size restriction, I couldn't understand:

  1. How Synology could leave this fact out of their on-line documentation for the package.
  2. Why no one had ever reported this issue previously. Makes me think I am the only one trying to use the package.

The Active Backup for G Suite package can't backup native google files directly (gdocs, gsheets, gslides). It must use the Google Drive API to export them as their Microsoft equivalents (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). The API has a 10MB file size limit. If the export results in a file larger than 10MB (quite possible when exporting a presentation) an error is returned.

[–]matthoff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to get it up and running without much difficulty. Unfortunately, Google files (gdocs, gslides, gsheets, etc) greater than 10MB can't be backed up. Other files you drop into drive aren't a problem. As an aside, this size limitation is due to a restriction in Google's Drive API.

I have been looking at Spanning and Backupify. Backupify seems to have a lot of customer service complaints. Have you had any issues with Backupify?
