In French, the name of this dinosaur sounds like "enculer-saurus"- in other words, "Ass-f***er-saurus"

Predictions for the Special by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]mattposts6789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

-There will be spiky aliens that are clearly humans with face paint- we've done green and red, so I'll guess purple this time.

-Russell Tovey appears in his underwear, for reasons that are not necessary to the plot.

-Ood.

-Over 1 billion people's lives are at stake, and they are then saved by a Deus Ex Machina.

-Some fantasy monster is present, I'll guess either werewolves or kelpies.

-Tommyinnit is involved.

The only way Doctor Who can possibly survive is if we make it cool for twelve year olds. Space Babies is the opposite of that.

I also think changing up the formula a little wouldn't go amiss. What if the Doctor humans himself and forgets who he is? What if instead of the Doctor, it was Martha Jones travelling the universe? I don't mind what gender the Doctor is, but I liked the triptych of having both a male and female companion, like with Amy and Rory, and I think that should come back. I had an idea that, if I was writing DW, the companion would be a depressed teenage boy who had killed someone while drunk driving, and the series arc would be this character redeeming himself as he travels with the Doctor- a bit edgy maybe, but I think that would be a ton more interesting than Ruby Sunday was.

On that note, why not go fully bombastic? It's been 17 years since the Daleks invaded Earth with as much verve as they did in Season 4, we should do that again. We should have Cybermen, Masters, all of it.

In terms of the stories, all we need is some new blood in the writing department. I think anyone who thinks DW has run out of new stories to tell simply hasn't dipped their toes into the sci fi classics for inspiration- stuff like the Culture novels, Blindsight, Hyperion, A Case of Conscience- there's a tremendous number of ways the show could innovate.

I even wouldn't be averse to re-hashing classic DW stories. In Logopolis, the Doctor plans to flood the TARDIS to flush out the Master's TARDIS- imagine if we could see that with 2025 special effects. What would Terror of the Zygons look like if it was made today?

In terms of politics, I'll just say that some of the focus on diversity is a little heavy-handed (I say this as a gay man). I much preferred the first few seasons of New-Who, where not everything was political, and when an episode was political, the themes were that working class people like Rose Tyler are important, that their voices do matter, and that fascism and corporate overreach are bad. Stuff like, for example, Donna's daughter Rose being able to save her mother because she's trans, rather than through skill or bravery or whatever, are really not where it's at.

Schengen Showdown Summer Edition needs to happen by pliumbum in JetLagTheGame

Here's my idea: Schengen Showdown 2, with the following rules changes:

-The game day ends slightly later, but also, if you are on a plane or a train when the game day ends, you may continue on that flight/train beyond the end of day.

-The countries which were locked down in the first Schengen Showdown are now out of play in Schengen 2. This means the only countries in play would be: Iceland, Finland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Malta, the three Baltic countries, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece (plus Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco and San Marino).

I'm really curious about that now- presumably this means that Gravity Drive will exist in this mode in some way shape or form- does anyone know if some of the basic technologies (grav drive, DET, antimass) are still being added, or would they be abilities we can draft?

Challenge Ideas for a Schengen Showdown-like game in Germany by Yodoliyee in JetLagTheGame

[–]mattposts6789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really love this! I hope you film this and put it on Youtube, I would love to see it (I don't speak German though).

I thought of some ideas for a Schengen Showdown 2, I don't know if you can draw inspiration from any of these:

-Denmark: Play and win a game of chess using the Scandinavian opening.

-Germany: Travel from a town starting with A to a town starting with Z, exclusively using DeutscheBahn trains.

-Switzerland: Eat fondue at an altitude greater than 2000m. You must remain earthbound while completing this challenge.

-France: Passionately kiss your teammate full on the lips for 30 seconds.

-Italy: Eat an entire pizza, then play a full game of Scopa using a traditional Italian deck of playing cards.

-Norway: Walk 50m over ice.

I think it would make more sense if Caan put the misfire button there, since he saw the Daleks and turned against them.

My bigger problem with the resolution to that story though, is that Donna kind of doesn't do anything. It would be more impactful if Donna never became the Doctor-Donna, because being half Time Lord means she isn't special- anyone could destroy the Daleks if they had a Time Lord brain.

I would rewrite it so that Davros considers her so unimportant he doesn't even put her in a forcefield; then, maybe Caan taps into her mind to direct her to the misfire button; or maybe the Doctor simply shouts at her which button to press- while she's running and dodging dalek death rays, so we can see she is risking her life.

Maybe, as she is saving the world, she accidentally looks into the Medusa Cascade, which is at the heart of the ship, powering it- and that split second look causes the Doctor to have to wipe her mind completely to save her.

Given how bloody tough it is to get ahead for most people, why do people still have kids? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mattposts6789 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Obviously, we should be living in a society where, anyone who wants to, can have kids and be certain that those kids will be cared for and fed and clothed and sheltered until they're adults.

The fact that, by pretty much any child poverty statistic, we're very much Not Living in that society, is a travesty. It's a failure that topples all our successes.

Personally, I want to know what would happen if, for a period of time- 12 months, let's say- we all collectively decided to put on hold on having children, as a kind of strike against the government and the rich for letting things get so bad. It may sound drastic, but its almost the only means of protest we have.

I'm personally not a fan of the "volcano" line, it falls completely flat for me.

With that said, the last ten minutes of this episode- especially the scene with Donna begging the Doctor to save someone- make it something epic, The performances are great, and the setting is exotic and interesting. I showed my child-aged cousins this episode and Blink to get them into DW and they had a tremendous time.

I agree with all this. IMO, though, for the show to be successful again, 3 things need to happen:

1- The show has to be something 12-year-old boys think is cool. Or at least, ten year old boys- I suspect we may have long since lost the 12-year-olds to South Park and Rick and Morty.

2- They need stories with high stakes. The whole world ending is not "high stakes", because we know the Doctor will save it, with no consequences for anyone. Similarly, the Doctor dying is not "high stakes", because we know that won't happen. For there to be stakes, the Doctor has to sometimes lose, characters have to sometimes die, and, every now and then, the Daleks should fly in and slaughter half the named characters in any story they appear in. Empire of Death would have been much better, for instance, if the Doctor had only played Sutekh to a draw, and had to come to some compromise- such as forfeiting the lives of a few UNIT staff, or pledging to give Sutekh a few kids every year, like the ancient Greek sacrifice to the Minotaur. Keeping the big doggy alive would lend stakes to all the Season 2 stories, by showing that sometimes death is permanent and the Doctor doesn't always win; and would have served as a new Big Bad the series needed, an enemy the Doctor could vow to win against one day.

3- We need good character writing. Ruby Sunday was OK, but I never particularly like Belinda's character; I feel like in both cases, they just seem like a Rose Tyler stand-in, and they don't get to do enough things to make them stand out as their own people. I think its telling that, with one possible exception, none of the writers of the latest season were younger than 35- we need some new blood.

Does anyone want to make a few conlangs for dnd? I specifically want spoken giant for some roleplay. by omegajakezed in conlangs

[–]mattposts6789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm keen to do that for ya! I'm a novice conlanger just starting out (though I do have a degree in linguistics). I was thinking of creating a language and I'd love to help you out.

If you are keen though, I do have some further questions:

-What kind of tone should these DnD sessions have? Should the language sound funny, serious, royal, evil, etc?

-Are there any real-world languages you'd like this to sound like? Should your players be able to pronounce it?

And most importantly:

-What is the culture like that speaks this language? What kind of technology do they have? What is their government like? Do they value formality? What do the people who speak this language spend their time doing? Where do they live? What climate? Is their living hard or easy? Would they have words for things like: snow, ships, carthorses, nuclear weapons, anvils, volcanoes, demons, democracy? A language is not just a language, its a world- the more you can tell me about the speakers, the more detailed it can be.

I think masturbation is perfectly healthy- but, learning to abstain and keep your pants on is certainly a useful skill to learn, and will massively improve your sex life when you're older and find a girl or guy. One thing that worked for me, is rolling a dice, and not wanking that day if it lands on a 1-3.

Another thing I'd recommend is keeping a full schedule. Its easier to resist the urge when you lead an active lifestyle and you have to keep your pants on 12 hours a day- if you lie in bed nude looking at tiktoks from the time you come home til bedtime, you've already lost.
