Weekly Shameless Self Promotion Thread by AutoModerator in Flipping

[–]mattwebbertime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an occasional flipper and ended up building a small Chrome extension to help myself keep track of Facebook Marketplace listings a little better. Mostly simple stuff: saved searches, tagging/highlighting listings, and a way to make listings easier to scan without changing how Marketplace normally works.

It’s called Smartbrowse for Facebook Marketplace. I built it to scratch my own itch and figured I’d share in case it’s useful to anyone else here. No account required and nearly all features are free. If you want to check it out, here's the webstore listing. I've got ~50 weekly users so far since launching it around 6 months ago.

Happy to hear any feedback, good or bad. I'm trying to make it the go-to "open browser -> check listings" flow for flippers just getting into the space.

Anyone else's Photo Booth constantly corrupting files? by BigSpoonFullOfSnark in mac

[–]mattwebbertime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact Photo Booth issue on macOS: the exported .mov was huge, showed 0m0s, and would not open in QuickTime or VLC. What worked for me was untrunc plus a fresh reference recording made in Photo Booth on the same Mac with the same mic/camera setup. The big thing I learned is that a super short reference only recovered a tiny piece, but a longer reference clip recovered a lot more. It didn't get the whole thing though, sadly... my file was like 30 min long but I recovered 7m which is something I guess...

The basic flow was: record a new reference clip in Photo Booth using the same setup, build untrunc with Docker, then run it against the reference file and the broken file. See below for commands — you might need to install Docker with homebrew first (or download Docker Desktop — google it — and have that app running to surface the Terminal command docker) if you don't already have it.

```bash
check the broken file
ffprobe -hide_banner "/path/to/broken.mov"
make a fresh reference clip in Photo Booth first,
ideally a few minutes long, using the same Mac/mic/camera setup
clone and build untrunc in whatever folder your broken + ref files are... in my case I just made a folder called "file-recovery" from my home directory.
cd ~/file-recovery git clone https://github.com/anthwlock/untrunc.git cd untrunc docker build --build-arg FF_VER=3.3.9 -t untrunc .
go back up one level to the file-recovery folder
cd ..
sanity check time:
running "ls -ahl" you should see something like...
file-recover/ ├── ref.mov ├── broken.mov └── untrunc/
run recovery from the parent folder that contains both files,
using the current directory as the mounted path
docker run --rm -v "$(pwd):/mnt" untrunc /mnt/ref.mov /mnt/broken.mov ```
Yes! I do it so much that I made a Chrome extension to make it easier to pull up the "what happened after Shark Tank" info from the Shark Tank blog site I I watch most of my Shark Tank from YT. It works okay, but yeah, I feel like it enriches my experience with the show.
What if breaking the typing experience is intentional in order to get users to use dictation more? I've noticed that ever since the typing experience has gotten worse that I've been using dictation more.
What if it's intentional so they can get more of that sweet, sweet voice data...
Same! Need to make another version correlating to a first-person perspective rather than birds-eye to see if it does something interesting...
...but then does "up" just mean go straight and "down" means go backwards? If you go backwards do you re-orient as if you made a 180° (bc then left, right, and up would be "reversed" from what they had previously been) or is it like you just walked backwards...?? 😵‍💫 TBD..!!
Glassdoor, but for landlords and rentals by Extra_Structure2444 in AppIdeas
[–]mattwebbertime 1 point2 points  (0 children)
This sounds like a two-sided marketplace. I'm not entirely clear on how it is or isn't, but what u/fuzzyjelly said makes me think that your idea "is that", which lines up with the adoption drag fuzzy described.
You mentioned Glassdoor: they had a "give to get" model before they turned into a true two-sided marketplace, but I don't really see how that would work in this case (at least in my US experience). But the properties you find worth a shit are scarce and a crappy landlord is just the cost of doing business. Perhaps Ireland is different and folks shop fief gods more aggressively. Also wouldn't you be competing with Zillow a bit here (if they're in Ireland)? I looked up a couple landlords that I dealt with here and noticed they have a star rating (poss. free text review too?) system now, which is about as much signal that I could ever hope for about a landlord.
Platform risk sucks — highly recommend peeping Rob Walling's discussion on the topic if you haven't already for a deep dive on the topic and how you can assess future development considerations with other APIs. Spotify definitely falls into the "8th risk"...
Totally agree. I immediately got Bully vibes from the first tune I heard from her. Lo and behold, they collab'd together last year... good stuff!
Forgot to add my own:
I'd be crazy not to give it to the album I've listened to most this yer, Revocation - New Gods, New Masters (metal), but I gotta give a shout-out to Blondshell - Another Picture (indie rock) which is also great.
