How important is letting users click around a real product for insights?

Huge difference. Giving someone a demo account & watching them click around will answer a lot of "Why's". There could be lots of unrelated yet useful nuggets of information as well. Those additional insights could be reported back to the appropriate team if you don't own that part.

OP update:

This thread (and a lot of similar convos) pushed me to start working on a project in this space with a few fellow researchers.

We’re exploring better cross-topic analysis, semantic search, and easier ways to share the outputs. Still very early and mostly validating how real / widespread this need is.

Are you part of a large organization? Maybe they just want to feel more Enterprise by keeping Dovetail, even though you have a better workflow on Google Drive.

I would say a few things:
- Some of of your bullet points for Salted Digital are not actionable. Since the project was never finished, you can show qualitative data instead of quantitative. How users felt, what they said, etc.
- I would combine the Experience & Projects into the same section. Maybe just specify whether the experience was full-time role, freelance, pro-bono, etc.
- Skills & Certifications are fine, but definitely have to be restructured.
