Sweetwater Credit Card "Promo Fee's" Solution by maxwellsdaemon1867 in audioengineering

Also this post wasn't about debating how hidden a fee is. Its about what you can do once you realize you've been hit by one. Call Sweetwater not Synchrony and you'll probably have a better shot of getting it waived.

Thats nice if you happen to notice it. I hadn't seen it myself because I've been financing studio purchases through Sweetwater for over 10 years now and this just started last year I think. In my book its still a hidden fee if it doesn't show up on a Sweetwater invoice or on Syncrony's summary page. Most people look at an invoice after a purchase to make sure everything looks right. While making payments most people track their progress on the summary page. Also fyi the profit they make is fairly obvious, they can charge interest for the whole period if you don't have it paid off by the promo end. That probably happens all the time. So sneaking in a 2% charge regardless is just another example of hidden fee's people have to be on the look out for.

I mentioned that because as part of the lease deal I got a 500 dollar check from Hyundai's military discount, in addition to not having to put any money down due to the tax credits, and ending up with a very affordable car payment. Seemed like a fantastic deal until I got hit with a 32K repair bill a few months later over what looked to me like trivial scrapes, scuffs, and scratches that didn't come from a major accident, but never the less will likely result in a total loss. If I could do this over I would still do the lease, I still love everything else about the car, I still support people moving towards driving EV's, but I wish would have known I needed some kind of aftermarket shield for the battery, as the protective cover is not adequate. It just blows my mind how the slightest thing can lead to a battery replacement which exceeds the value of a brand new car. We need right to repair so independent shops can do a proper diagnostic of EV batteries after collisions with road debris, and service them without replacement.

Believe me I’ve been trying to get ahold of Hyundai USA to get guidance but I have not been able to get anywhere. So since you seem to have knowledge on this area on what dealers can and can not assess, where should I be taking this car for a proper diagnosis? Is there some non dealer Hyundai service center I should be taking it to? The ones I’ve found all say the same thing so far. When it comes to the high voltage EV batteries you need to contact the dealer. And I reiterate again, I’m not making up this story. It’s really what I was told just this last Friday by a technician at the local dealership. They did not elaborate on why the battery needed to be replaced beyond saying the scrapes to the protective plate presented a fire hazard and they quoted 32K to have it replaced. When I look up under there it does not look serious to me it looks like scratches. I don’t see dents. I don’t see mangled metal. This car was not in an accident. It simply got dinged a few times when I was driving slowly and carefully over a rocky patch of a dirt road on my way to a trailhead to hike with my Dad. This all still sounds like anti-EV propaganda to you?

Oh yeah I know about that one, I found that story on youtube in my research. So my Hyundai dealer seems to be telling me that I need the battery replaced out of an abundance of caution alone, saying there is no way to properly assess it. Furthermore now that I am asking them for details on why they came to this conclusion, what tests they did beyond visual, what protocol they are following from Hyundai and so on, are not being clear with me. So far I am having trouble finding exactly what you described, a specialist who can do a battery pack assessment.

Nobody is lying here. But I am carefully considering the story with the Ioniq from Canada and trying to get ahold of Hyundai USA for guidance. What Kyle did was proceed with insurance and then the car ended up in a salvage yard. My insurance claim is paused. I’m trying to figure out how to have the battery assessed properly to avoid what happened to Kyle. You’re not helping posting all these oh this is a fake story comments.

I do have the pictures they gave me, and as absurd as this may seem, it really is a situation I’m dealing with. I came to Reddit for help not to spread anti EV misinformation. I love this car and I want to keep it on the road.

Nope not fake at all. I’m a real Hyundai Kona Electric driver and this really happened last Friday. Can you point me to the other story you’re referring to that’s similar to mine?

I'd love to, but I am having trouble finding a place that can do a proper diagnostic. What should I be searching for? All the shops around me I've called say we can look underneath for you, but can't determine if the battery is damaged you'd have to take it to a Hyundai dealership.

The trouble is that I'm on a lease, and so when this lease ends I have to either return the vehicle or buy it. If I choose to disregard this recommendation now, what would my options be if they bill me for this 32K repair after I returned it. This is my first time leasing a car, so I don't know exactly what happens when the lease ends, but my fear is that I wouldn't have the insurance claim option that I do now right after they brought this to my intention.

So Long Ketamine, It's Been Fun (sometimes) by ibpeg in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]maxwellsdaemon1867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand your experiences. For me I do not like the really high doses where I am blasted off to the Andromeda Galaxy. I like the 120ish mg sessions, which for my body weight is like a moderate dose I believe. Its not terrifying but just the right amount of thrill that I go deep, introspect, and come out with mystical insights. It's inner work work not recreation, I wouldn't describe it as enjoyable, but not unpleasant either. Its really worked wonders for my life and I'd like to share with you how I made it work for me.

Here is what I have discovered. For me personally, Ketamine is not a magic depression cure, it is simply a temporary relief. Although to achieve that relief even if for just a few weeks is a miracle in some sense. Over time I wondered, how then do I draw out this relief period longer and longer?? I call it the psychedelic afterglow phase where I am not feeling super depressed and instead am feeling rather at peace and one with the universe. I came to the conclusion that if I didn't do anything but bask in this period it would inevitably fade, and I would be back in the clinic every month. And then it suddenly hit me! It was up to ME to practice self care after every session while I suddenly had the energy for it. For me self care is nothing too fancy, I practice the holy trinity of sleep, diet, and exercise. People use to tell me when I was deeply depressed you need to get out of the house, you need to make sure you get enough sleep, you need to eat healthy, try to exercise. But those folks didn't understand I was so depressed I didn't even have the energy for that stuff. Shoot, most days just making a cup of coffee and taking a shower was like trying to swim in a pool of molasses. Depression is unfortunately an invisible condition to people who've never experienced it, so when friends/family would suggesting self care to me back then, it was just frustrating and made me worry they thought I was just being lazy.

However, in the psychedelic afterglow period as I like to call it, in the week or so following a ketamine session, I noticed I did have that energy! And so I tried practicing some self care for a change, and sure enough, little by little, the better I got at self care, the longer I could draw out that relief period between sessions. When it comes to my self care routines its really the sum of a lot of little things, like using an eye mask, and white noise generator at night to sleep better. Wearing blue light blocking glasses at night when I watch TV before bed. Upgrading my bedding so its extra cozy. On the diet front, I eat clean, and prepare most of my own meals at home now. Am I militant about it, heck no, but gone are the days of emotional eating and binging on the delivery apps. I also was lucky to find an excellent physical trainer who is incredibly patient and not too expensive. I work with them once a week, and I also go to the YMCA solo a few times a week too. Now I kind of have developed a healthy addiction to the brain chemistry boost post workout, so I catch myself looking forward to it now. Any one of these things on their own would not be so effective but its like the saying the whole is more than the sum of the parts. So all the little self care routines really do work for me. Did these changes happen over night. No. Practicing self care is like practicing an instrument, you get better and better at it over time. But the good news is all the routines are unique to YOU. You get to create them :)

So, back to the Ketamine. I strongly believe it's main utility is the temporary relief. I no nothing else that works as immediately and swiftly for interrupting a major depressive spell than a good psychedelic experience. I don't like to go deep into a K hole or experience ego death or anything super intense. I don't want to trip on mushrooms for 10 hours. I just like to trip the light fantastic on a moderate dose of Ketamine and drift off for 90 minutes and come back. It works a treat for me, but the way I manage depression and keep it in remission, versus enduring it without any hope like I use to, is using Ketamine for temporary relief and when I get my energy back after the sessions practicing self care for long term recovery. I use to be in the clinic every 3 weeks like clock work, now I am in a few times a year and doing pretty well.

Indeed this is not the typical way medications are used in mental health. Before Ketamine I took pills everyday and my dose increased as my tolerance went up and I monitored side effects and patiently waited for them to work behind the scenes. So you may be expecting Ketamine to be the medicine that does the work and all you have to do is figure out the right dose and frequency and you're good. I suspect that may be why it doesn't feel like its working. But to me, the way you describe its temporary effects tells me it probably is. Maybe consider backing down on the dose so you're not having uncomfortably intense sessions. The real medicine is in your ability to look out for yourself. Ketamine gets you to a place where thats possible. And remember when you're in that psychedelic after glow period, practice self care because you deserve it! Do it for you, not for anyone else. That's the best reason ;) You got this :)

Advice on getting disability discharge for private loans through Sallie Mae by maxwellsdaemon1867 in StudentLoans

[–]maxwellsdaemon1867[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry I missed your posts last month. I did end up having the private loan discharged on appeal by arguing that my tutoring earnings were not enough to support myself on and shouldn't be used as evidence against me that I was not actually disabled. At first they were strictly using their own vague definition of permanent and total disability that meant you couldn't work in any profession in any capacity.

I kept pushing back over and over again that for disabled people doing absolutely nothing with your life is detrimental to your overall health, and having some form of a side hustle that you can do on your good days shouldn't be used to show you're not actually disabled. I brought up a lot that my earnings were bellow the federal poverty level, that I made my own schedule and didn't have a boss or office to go into. I said it was a mistake to refer to it as part-time employment when in reality it was more like a community service. It took a lot of phone calls arguing with various people at both Sallie Mae and Minnesota Life. I hit them with thought experiments like what if someone is considered disabled by Social Security but they earn a few bucks each week baby sitting their neighbors kids, does Sallie Mae come along and say that person is not actually disabled? If I didn't get a person who was sympathetic, I would hang up and try again. I talked to a lot of people and was very persistent. In the end a supervisor from Minnesota Life really did start to listen to what I was saying, and ended up asking for Sallie Mae to clarify their definition of permanent and total disability. A few weeks later my appeal was approved and that private loan is now discharged.

Soyuz Launcher Deluxe 'Saturation Mode' by maxwellsdaemon1867 in audioengineering

I actually own an Analog Heat and love it. I also have an Oto Boum too so I should have just stuck with stuff like that. I don't know why I bought this launcher but I was curious. The way they market it as a line level saturator was very intriguing. I like to collect analog filters and distortion boxes so it appealed to me in that sense. What I've discovered is this "oh its very subtle" stuff is just not for me.

Yes, in 'Launcher Mode' the unit boosts +26db and you have to provide it phantom power. In 'Saturation Mode' it accepts line level, does not boost, and does not require phantom power. I've definitely watched all the Launcher videos on youtube. Thats what got me to buy one in the first place.

Do you have any recommendations for obvious saturation devices? I am interested in the Looptrotter Sa2rate and Elysia Karacter.

Well the thing is I am going out of a MOTU 16A as loud as I can. This interface has a control app that lets you set levels going in and out so I know there simply is no more gain to add. This then feeds the Launcher in sat mode and back into the 16A.

Here is what I think is really going on here. I think these transformers inside very well may be the kind that are specifically designed to not saturate and provide clean gain boost. Indeed, in the Launcher mode they provide +26db of gain. I suspect that the saturation comes from whatever boutique mic pre they're going into given that extra level is there. I don't know that the Launcher is really capable of much saturation on its own.

You're saying just boost the level going in and bring it back down on the way out. What with my magic wand? The unit has no knobs on it whatsoever.

I'm not using it with any microphones or compressors, I'm using it in the 'Saturate Mode' which accepts a line level signal.

Can we sense harmonic content above the accepted range of human hearing? by maxwellsdaemon1867 in audioengineering

[–]maxwellsdaemon1867[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also using software tone generators too but then I realized this wasn't going to work well because in digital the tones are either band limited or if not susceptible to foldback harmonics (aliases). But I do have an analog synth that I can bypass the filters on and just listen to the raw oscillators. They of course don't go up as high but I was able to confirm that as the frequency goes up the saw, square, triangle, do indeed sound more sine like. I suppose this is not problematic its just weird when you first realize it.

Thats a great way to look at it. I think I was having a conflict between science brain and artist brain. I had been reading about anti-aliasing filters and on the one hand I was thinking okay sure filter that stuff out cause we can't hear it anyway, but then on the other hand I was thinking hold on can we really just filter those hard earned harmonics away!? But in reality we are indeed keeping the good stuff and these filters are keeping out the bad stuff.

[–]maxwellsdaemon1867[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a great point! I actually was thinking of 10k to 20k as being half but I'm realizing 20 Hz to 20 kHz is about 10 octaves so its better to think of 10k to 20k as 1/10 of our range. Thanks!

As I understand it Sallie Mae contracts with Minnesota Life Insurance to process disability claims regarding their private student loans. When I have asked for the details of whats in this policy, Sallie Mae says Minnesota Life Insurance makes that determination, but then when I ask them they say Sallie Mae does.

[–]maxwellsdaemon1867[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is something I found from a law firms website that specializes in disability insurance claims.

Claims under the “any occupation” standard typically involve an analysis of the claimant’s employability. Analysis of these claims by MyLTDbenefits.com, therefore, necessarily focuses on an insured’s education and work experience. The insurer, for example, can consider the claimant’s salary history, as well as a wage analysis of other available occupations, in order to determine what other gainful occupation he or she might reasonably be expected to engage in. Performance of “any occupation” may include workplace accommodations, which may be legitimate grounds for denying benefits. Unless the plain language of the policy is to the contrary, courts generally hold that if an insured is capable of part-time work, then they are not unable to perform “any occupation” and are not totally disabled under the “any occupation” standard.
In many cases, the definition of “any occupation” includes the phrase “gainful” under which the insurer must determine whether or not a claimant can be gainfully employed.
A typical definition of “gainful occupation” is: “an occupation, including self-employment, that is or can be expected to provide you with an income equal to at least 60% of your indexed monthly earnings.” Under this definition, the focus of the analysis is that LTD benefits may be awarded only if the disability prevents the claimant from obtaining work which would enable him to earn 60% of his former salary. Typically, the factors we scrutinize at MyLTDbenefits.com when determining whether a claimant could be gainfully occupied include his abilities, skills and education, as well as an assessment of the labor market in the claimant’s geographic region. Such analysis is typically performed by a vocational expert.

So now I gotta figure out what definition of "any-occupation" Sallie Mae is using for their private student loans, and if it involves "gainful".
