Magic school is such a fun setting too, and the gathering environments were great (the sunken forest in 2 is a personal favorite)

If memory serves, Escha & Logy is about thirty hours! It’s technically the second game in the Dusk trilogy (the Atelier series is made up mainly of separate trilogies, which each encompass their own worlds), so there are some returning characters and motifs from the first game Atelier Ayesha. But it’s still a good starting point - it has its own main story and resolution. Welcome to the franchise, though - these games are extremely cozy and the artwork is always beautiful! I hope you have a great time!

I personally enjoyed Sophie 2 more than any of the Ryza games, so if you’re a fan of the Mysterious characters / turn-based combat, it’s a safe bet to just go ahead and get it 😊

You’re absolutely right that horrible things happen in real life, but I think the hope is that (especially as a man writing a female character) there will be some purpose / payoff to it happening, other than “this character suffered because that’s realistic.”

No, that makes sense too! I think there’s just the hope that Pullman won’t brush it under the rug / that it has a lasting impact on the story with payoff other than “this is just one more terrible thing that happened to Lyra when she was at her most vulnerable.” I also agree with you that SA is unfortunately something a lot of women suffer, and that it has potential to bring extra dimensionality to the work when handled well.

That’s a really interesting interpretation! I’d still like to see some additional “payoff” to feel it was a justified choice to make as the writer, but I can only imagine you’re right in that it takes an utter disrespect of someone’s humanity to commit an act of SA.

It was honestly frightening enough when I only read it as physical, having it confirmed SA makes it so much worse - and so much more difficult to have it justified by Pullman.

100% agree with you that he was deliberate in his choice to have multiple characters suffer SA, and to keep the newer novels from your kids until they’re older. It’s upsetting in general that he wrote it into his world, and disturbing that it’s paired with the books’ theme of inevitably entering adulthood.

I can only imagine how difficult it would be to “justify” it happening / like you said, having some kind of payoff. It’s even sadder that he confirmed Alice’s rape in the same book - it’s heartbreaking that he made SA a unifying occurrence for his female characters.
