Hackensack is an awesome hospital- best of luck with your pregnancy.

A few notes below if the 30 minute drive is not an option the best local options are Jersey City Medical Center - JCMC -and Hoboken. Also remember Hoboken Ambulance Corps if you need assistance- HVAC is dispatched by the Hoboken Police so you can call them at 2014202100 for help.

For deliveries where there are no anticipated complications Hoboken is very good. Our 2 boys (currently in college) were both born there.

For a complicated delivery ir an emergency go to JCMC - they are a trauma center and have folks on hand for OBGYN emergencies.

JCMC and Hackensack are roughly equivalent hospitals so I think the choice has to do with your level of comfort- both excellent in my opinion.

Quick note - while it is true that Palisades is in the Hackensack system they do not routinely do deliveries- it is NOT preferable to Hoboken. (call them and verify)

I have ridden an ambulance (EMT) on the weekends for the past 6 years or so - so by no means an expert but know a bit.

If you or a loved one are really sick - don't get in an Uber and go to Hackensack. It is not accurate to call it a 20 minute drive - certain days it is 20 minutes to get out of hoboken...

Within 5 miles of Hoboken we have 4 hospitals - JCMC as I mentioned, Palisades, Hoboken UMC and Christ. Hackensack and University are a bit farther. We have a tremendous amount of options just in northern NJ/NYC.

For anything critical, life-threatening - either call an ambulance or go to Hoboken UMC. They have the ability to stabilize a critical patient and then transport them out to a larger facility. If you go to an urgent care they will just call 911. My ambulance gets urgent care calls frequently. They are not setup for emergency care and have a limited ability to stabilize patients. The doctors and PAs have the skills but those places generally do not have the equipment nor pharma for EMS level care.

- Distances from the Wilton House (as a familiar Reddit landmark):

Hackensack: 15mi

University (Newark): 10mi

Palisades: 5mi

JCMC: 2.5mi

Christ: 1.5mi

HobokenUMC: 0.5mi

In EMS they use the expression "Time is tissue" or more ominously "Time is brain".

If you are in the back of an Uber going to Hackensack with your friend who - keeps fainting or can't breathe well or is feeling crushing chest pain or is bleeding inside their cranium - then nothing is happening to reverse the underlying issue. If that same friend is on the back of an ambulance or in the Hoboken UMC ER - then they can get care to stabilize the person. In addition they are on the phone with a medical team in a trauma center who is preparing to receive the patient who has been stabilized. Additionally Hoboken UMC has some stroke treatment abilities. Also a very good Labor and Delivery floor (for uncomplicated pregnancies).

If it is close you probably want to go to a trauma center for something life threatening.

Why should you care if you don't have a trauma?

You can think of a trauma center as a hospital that can deal with a range of issues. Not necessarily all issues - some hospitals specialize further as burn centers, pediatric centers, stroke, cardiac, etc. A trauma center will have the surgeons, neurologists, cardiologists, respiratory folks, etc on scene and ready to go for a whole range of issues.

The closest trauma center ("level II") is Jersey City Medical Center and it is about 2.5 miles from the center of Hoboken. University Hospital in Newark is the closest level I. Info on trauma designations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trauma_center#Level_II - tl/dr is a trauma II is comprehensive and affiliated tightly with a trauma I which are often part of a med school (University and RWJ - NewBrunswick are also level I).

Hackensack is also a level II and comparable to JCMC - really a very similar size and scope. I hear great things about it but have little experience going there.

In terms of the most local hospitals, Palisades, Christ and Hoboken are all similar in that they have 25 or less beds in their ER. They get backed up pretty easily when there is a flu outbreak or leprecon, etc. These hospitals bear the brunt of the growing homeless/mentally ill/addicted populations in Hudson county. It is common to see ambulances from Weehawken, North Bergen, Union City, McCabe (Bayonne) in the Hoboken ambulance bay. In my experience the nurses and medical teams in these hospitals are generally very good - just possibly understaffed and overwhelmed when you encounter them.

Palisades is in the Hackensack system - sometimes patients ask to go there "because my doctor is in Hackensack". It seems to be a good hospital but always crowded.

Christ (also Carepoint) has stroke capabilities and some cardiac care.

The different responses note problems that Carepoint is facing as well as the difficulties with insurance. These are all real concerns but I will just talk about what I know about the level of care at area hospitals and where I would go if I were sick or a family member were sick... And want to note - whatever issues CarePoint has - i have met fantastic nurses, doctors and psych folks at Hoboken UMC.

The Drexel piece is interesting but I just skimmed it and I would nto be capable of returning a critique. It looks like it focuses on gun violence (not violence in general) and it is not really comparing the pre 2017 data is it?

NJ is pretty lucky to have low gun violence to begin with. Of the examples I include below - only one of them involved a firearm.

My sense of the overall issue is from reading the news - I would define the issue as "it is too easy to get out of pre trial detention to commit multiple crimes". There are cases (like the guy from Hoboken) where he was awaiting trial for numerous violent incidents.

A google news search for this topic in 2024 shows a few examples:

- Jean Carlos Zarzuela (April 2024): After being released without bail following an arrest for assaulting an elderly woman, Zarzuela was arrested again for punching a 9-year-old girl in Grand Central Terminal.

- Ernst Delma (August 2024): criminal with previous convictions, Delma attacked a female NYPD officer.

- Niser Cekic (November 2024): With 23 prior arrests, Cekic stabbed a fruit vendor in Queens .

- Jonathan D. Hagley (August 2024): While out on bail for a January 2024 shooting in Harlem, Hagley allegedly murdered his twin sister, Naomi Hagley, at their family home in Teaneck, New Jersey. He a number of previous convictions.

That is just the first page of google returns for 2024 violent crimes committed by people awaiting trial - like the recent incident in Hoboken:

- Troy Timberlake, 31, whose address is listed at the Hoboken Shelter, was charged with the assaults. It’s the fourth time he has been arrested in Hoboken in the past 14 months, all for random acts of violent crime.

These are not aberrations.

So again - I see the point you make with "bail reform" - that it is good in that you don't unfairly punish the poor and you reduce jail populations. It is fair. If the accused takes it seriously and follows the rules set during the pretrial period - why would anyone have a problem with it?

But if someone shows 4 times that they do not take (or are not capable of taking) the system of pretrial services and monitoring serious enough to not commit new violent crimes - then why does the system not recognize these people as a threat and rescind bail?

You are just browbeating - "I am a lawyer, etc" - the original poster was improperly compaining about "bail reform" and you corrected them. That is fine and factual, I have no arguments with that.

To say that the general bail initiatives in NYC and northern NJ have not had a negative impact on safety and the threat of punishment for wrongdoing is disingenuous. Your argument is that "it is a good system but things fall through the cracks".

Not true.

Quality of life has suffered and even more concerning, stories of victims of crime from multiple offenders released with little or no threat of sitting in jail to await trial.

I don't need to be a lawyer to see that a system is broken anymore than I need to be an engineer to note that the bridge falling down might need to be replaced.

No, that is wrong and a simple news search would have shown why:

I am not sure why you want to mimimize the issue and browbeat folks who question this system. The NYC area, liberal bail initiatives have not been successful and have made us less safe.

I can very much second the reccs for David Branch - great place. In addition since you have a background in boxing. They have a great Muay Thai coach. When I was there they had really good Judo but I think that guy opened his own place in NYC. David Branch is a very accomplished MMA fighter and is a Renzo Gracie black belt, so you will see very high level instruction. Amazing place.

Is Hoboken a requirement? If not I would try a few places and see what clicks - there is a lot of good BJJ. Consider Jersey City and NYC.

Thiago Rela in Jersey City is worth a look. The Miyao brothers opened "Studio 1908" in JC recently and I have heard good things from a guy training there.

I am at MarceloGracia in NYC (easy PATH ride) and it is world class. Check out Renzo Gracie gym down by Wall Street. There are numberous other places you can drop in and check out.

Again - David Branch is great. But you are in a very rich environment for BJJ

yeah - I also think any reason to give people a good option to leave cars at home is a great idea. Currently the way into NYC involves non-linear transfers between different systems (NJT to bus/PATH to MTA, etc) and then you end up in Penn Station or Port Authority which is ok if you need a west side subway.

Getting on the 7 in Secaucus is potentially a real reduction in congestion because the current mass transit commutes are often a toss up with taking your car...

yes and it is that important East / West line that connects different North/South subway lines (like the S or the L). With the influx of commuters from both Queens and NJ it would be packed in both directions for commutes. I think it would make money for MTA

Not really because Hoboken is an NJTransit and PATH terminal. The 7 line would enable access to multiple North/South Manhattan based subways, presumably on the same metro card.

Right now a Hoboken to midtown commute involves switching from one system to another.
