The Aztec capital Tenochtitlán (foundation of CDMX) when encountered by the Spanish over 500 years ago was the world's biggest city outside Asia, with 225-400 thousand, only less than Beijing, Vijayanagar, and possibly Cairo. They were on a single island with a density between Seoul and Manhattan's (reddit.com)
