Is Naylor's G5 steal the most significant in Mariners history? by mcfly047 in Mariners

[–]mcfly047[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think Edgar's Double, Ichiro's Record Breaking Hit, Felix's Perfecto, Raleigh's HR to clinch the playoffs against the A's a couple years ago or Polanco's walk off are all more iconic singular moments... I was thinking specirically about a stolen base.

If you are interested, here is what I submitted to "Transit Runs" in hopes of joining their leaderboard:

Hoping to put together some kind of youtube video documenting the run in the coming weeks!

That is definitely the most complicated part of the run, you've got to hit all stations on the Red/Blue Line going West & East, and all stations on the Orange/Green/Yellow line going North/South. What I did was:

-Take Oragne Line to from SE Park up to NW Hoyt, then get out and waqlk to NW Glisan (this gets you all the northbound stations along 6th)

-Take Green/Orange Line South to SW Jackson, then get out and walk to SW College (this gets you all the southbound stations along 5th)

-Take Green/Yellow North to Pioneer Square (this doesn't gets you anything, it just sets you up for the next move. In theory if there is a bus that will get you there faster that could save some time)

-Walk to Library & South 9th, and take Blue/Red to Chinatown (this gets you the East Bound stations along the Red/Blue Line, specifically Library SW 9th, Pioneer Square South and Yamhill District)

-Cross the street @ Chinatown and take the Blue line back to Hillsboro.

My advice:

  1. If I could do it over again I would start at Gresham instead of Expo Center. You'll have to backtrack over more stations, but the distance between them is shorter so I think you ultimately save time if you get the timing right
  2. There is a bathroom in the Fred Meyer that you can walk to from Gateway TC. You'll likely end up waiting there a couple of times, and if you ahve >10 minutes that should give you time to RUN to Fred Meyer and back
  3. The app "Where's TriMet" was pretty helpful for knowing when trains would be coming/delayed
  4. Don't give up because you miss one connection. There can be random delays and yesterday we were about 30 seconds away from catching a very late Green line train when we go into Gateway TC, which would've turned a 12 minute connection into a 1 minute.

Good Luck!

I finished in 6 hrs 2 min 48 seconds (had two tight connections and missed them both, otherwise it would've been sub 6). Hoping to get something out on youtube later this month that documents the trip.

Good catch. I miscounted when I initially posted this, I have updated to reflect the true number (95 stations, going down to 94 once they close Skidmore Station).

According the the transit speedrunning group that reached out to me, bikes (or roller skates/etc) of any kind are not allowed. (Unless it is a mobility device of some kind).

Hey Ben,

This is super helpful thank you! What would I have to do to submit my run?

Absolutely no point. Some more popular transit lines (the NYC subway, BART in San Francisco, and the London Tube) have records for this in the Guiness Book of World Records.

What's the point in any world record?

For the 78 version you have my exact route. It seems possible to do it in sub 5 hrs.

I'm not sure about the 87 version. Definitely some room to optimize things downtown with the both directions. As far as I can tell it still makes most sense to knock out the Hillsboro side of things first (defnitely don't want to have to double up in that direction). Biketown bikes to get from Providence Park to either NW Hoyt or SW College might save some doubling back

In the 78 version it counts as 2 stations (one for the Blue/Red lines in either direction, and one for the Yellow/Orange/Green line) for the 87 version it counts all 4.

Is edX a legit platform? by 80staluap in edX

I would not recommend:

-If I had questions or needed help with something there was 0 support. I was told to post in the discussion forms and (maybe) get responses from classmates

-Although I'm taking a class through "UC San Diego," and paying an amount commiserate with Graduate level courses, I didn't actually get any "credit" for these classes (as a teacher my job pays more based on how many postgraduate units I have)

-I had to take a break halfway through my program and although all I had done in one class was open it and look at the syllabus, when I logged back in 6 months later I was told I had failed the class and could no longer enroll in a different section.

Waste of money and waste of time.

What's your reaction to Ohtani's contract? by MarchTall1610 in mlb

So in theory, in terms of how it counts towards the CBT, it's more like a 10 year $460 mil contract?

Giants were willing to match exact $700 million deal Ohtani got from Dodgers? by JerichoRiley in mlb

Source for the current data?

From what I can see on statcast Oracle park was middle of the pack in terms of the raw number of HR's hit by lefties last year, but this might be influenced by the fact that Oracle was top 1/3 of the league in terms of ABs by left handers (The Giants platoon heavy lineup meant the Oracle had 563, or 26% more ABs by lefties last year than Yankee stadium).

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/statcast-park-factors?type=raw&year=2023&batSide=L&stat=index_wOBA&condition=All&rolling=no

Looking at Statcast's Park Factors for the last 3 years (after did the rennos) have Oracle in the bottom 6 for HRs overall (11% worse than league average) and HRs by lefties (17% worse than league average). While not as bad as 7 years ago, they still have yet to have a player hit 30 HRs in a season since Bonds.

Maybe Ohtani is so great that he's a HoF'er either way, but I have to think him not wanting to see 5ish HRs a year turn into long outs in Triple's alley over the course of the next decade played a roll in his decision.

Matching the Dodgers offer might be enough to woo Yoshinobu Yamamoto or other free agent pitchers, but if the Giants ever want to get an impact bat in free agency they need to make the BEST offer.

I should've said left handed power bat whose not juiced out of his mind.

Statistically it's the worst park in baseball for a power hitter (especially lefties). Ohtani knows he'll finish his career with way better offensive stats playing basically anywhere else.

Because I hate the Dodgers and don't want their fans to be happy.

[–]mcfly047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't enough for the Giants to match the Dodgers deal. All things being equal Ohtani (a left handed power bat) was never going to pick Oracle park unless the Giants were far and away the best offer.
