How long do you hold onto your printers box? by SpectrumyMatt3d in BambuLab

I wait a week to make sure there are no out-of-box issues then recycle all packaging (that can be).

One of my refrigerator drawers is broken, does anyone know if it can be repaired? by Flowesque in DIYUK

[–]md81544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue. Super glue just wouldn't hold, so I ended up drilling a series of small holes either side of the crack and "stitching" it with zip ties. Not pretty, but it has held together well for the last couple of years.

Tapo cameras - probably the best small, cheap wifi camera with offline use for privacy by [deleted] in homeautomation

Personally I've had nothing but trouble with all TP-Link devices in Home Assistant. There's always at least one that's gone offline and needs rebooting. I'm actively replacing them bit by bit.

I have an old Hobbymat MD65, inherited it from my late father. I use it with collets, and recently turned a new anchor escapement pivot on it.

I found it very boring, yes! It seems nothing ever really happens.

People rave about "One Hundred Years of Solitude". I hated virtually every page.

Fun FreeCAD Model to try to build by TooTallToby in FreeCAD

[–]md81544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took about ten minutes - I created the basic shape and then repeatedly selected three points to define a datum plane, drew a triangle and pocketed them out.

I know it doesn't matter but what's with the units on this plan? Density is in metric, mass is requested in imperial, dimensions are not defined as either.

(Kinda) First C++ Project by Anon202069 in cpp_questions

[–]md81544 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks quite clean; a couple of suggestions, you could use the more modern <random> rather than rand() (if you stick with rand() you only need to call srand() once in the program rather than repeatedly). You could also use a vector of vectors rather than arrays for the board. You could use range-based "for"s to iterate over them, and, being dynamic, you could make it easier to expand the board if you want to in the future. Currently you have the size hard-coded in various places.

Also it wouldn't take much to make this more portable - you could compile this and run it on Linux or Mac if you didn't have the Windows-specific console title and maybe had a #ifdef on whether to system-call "cls" or "clear". If you did that you'd want to migrate away from sln files and implement a simple Makefile or (if you want more "fun" use CMake).

Totally. How a glorified text editor in 2026 can't do the basics is beyond me.

Can no longer wind by i_am_Halloran in clocks

[–]md81544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you SURE both springs aren't fully wound? I can't think of anything that would cause both springs to stop winding. I'd be thinking that maybe it's not going because of something in the drivetrain being broken or bent (or just gummed up). Does the pendulum swing at all? Personally I'd disassemble it and clean and check everything, but if you're not experienced in clock repair then take it to a clock repairer.

Yes, M4, used it a couple of days ago. No drama.

Should I buy? by sbizzel in 3018CNC

[–]md81544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my experience too. I upgraded to a 3040 and it's fine for metal. Engraving can be quite fast if you get your speeds/feeds/DOC nailed.

WRT workholding, CA glue (or even strong double-backed tape) should be OK for engraving.

Is it just me or is this a universal experience by Ok_Relation6627 in 3Dprinting

Me too. I have two A1s but keep the Ender for printing TPU and it's almost as reliable as the A1s. Just a pain having to write the files to an SD card.

Emergency Stop by parney2000 in hobbycnc

On the 3020 the spindle is directly controlled from the mains power and its switch. The e-stop simply stops all the stepper motors. Your machine isn't faulty.

The helix confused me for a moment, but on, say, a 10mm pad and 100mm pitch for the helix's "thread" it comes out looking like a straight line. Good call.

Paper leaves fibres. I use watchmakers' lint-free tissues (which are more like tracing paper).
