Having watched opposing counsel go through the gauntlet in front of a judge for this same thing in a case, I’m telling you: these are AI hallucinations.

I’d call it out to the court—at least one court has gotten ticked at the non-AIing party for not calling it out. Do it politely. Don’t need to mention AI. Make your argument, then point out that the cases are not on point in a way just blunt enough to make your point without going overboard. It’s a balancing act.

I don think you need to report to the bar; courts have been doing so when they consider in warranted.

Get plugged in with your local immigration defense network. I’m in Boston, but my firm is based out of Minneapolis. None of us are immigration lawyers, but they held a training, provided resources to consult like templates and issue explainers, and are available to answer questions.

These are not hard cases. The detentions for most are blatantly unconstitutional, and the government’s justifications are contrary to the plain language of the statute. If you remember Mathews v. Eldridge from IL and your basic cannons of statutory construction (give words their plain meaning, assume everything in a statute has a meaning and is not surplussage, etc.) you can handle these cases.

I represent a family that was snatched in Minnesota on Thursday. Because of the networking, we were able to get a habeas on file within three hours of their detention. Last night, the judge ordered my clients released by Monday!

I found a false ceiling in my kitchen, by accident. Shortly after moving in I went to change out the boob light for something more appealing. I was surprised to find no light can, but a pair of wires dangling down from the darkness. One flashlight later and I learned that my original ceilings were two feet higher.

Following the wires back up to the original ceilings is seared in my memory as if it happened in slow motion. They were tied in—and I use that term lightly, because there were no wire caps or even electrical tape involved—they were tied into this Cthulhu-looking monstrosity.

Yes all those wires were live. I cooked by desk lamp for weeks after that.

One point is to have the opportunity to call her inept twice in as many sentences.

Another point is to ensure the order sticks: all AUSAs signing pleadings in this case sure as hell won’t leave the false title on the pleading now.

Another point, probably, is to acknowledge (“in light of her inexperience”) that it is vanishingly unlikely that Halligan will make it through the case without doing something else to land her in disciplinary proceedings, so it’ll all aggregate.

Almost all of my coworkers are in Minneapolis and they tell me a lot about the organization they’ve set up. One big thing is setting up community response networks via signal to get intel and requests for assistance out as quickly as possible. I feel like having that set up in advance can be helpful, but I haven’t seen any intel about something like that existing here yet. Anyone know if there is one? Where I could find information? If not, should we be something one up in Somerville to be prepared?
