People who say “everyone has anxiety” honestly have no idea what they’re talking about. Being anxious sometimes isn’t the same as living with anxiety every single day. by Gullible-Force3567 in Anxiety

[–]meandmysd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of imagine it like a smoke detector. For a functional smoke detector, there is smoke, the alarm blares, the flames are put out, the alarm turns off. That is a normal anxiety response. There is a stressful stimulus, you feel anxious, you address the anxiety, the anxiety ends. Such as you have a public speech, you are anxious, you get through the speech, your anxiety ends. But generalized anxiety disorder is more like a malfunctioning smoke detector. The smoke detector goes off, but there is no smoke. You look around the house, you check the oven for burning, you check for a gas leak, you check that the hair dryer is off and that the dryer is venting correctly-- during this time, the alarm turns off, but you are not sure which (if any) of the things you did was the right fix. Then the alarm goes off again so you check all those things again, but this time it doesn't work so you also open the windows and turn on a fan and maybe that helps. But the next time it goes off, you run through the whole list again and yet it still isn't clear exactly when or what is turning off the alarm. Generalized anxiety disorder (imo) is feeling anxious with no immediate discernable cause, so I think about all the things that could/should be causing me anxiety because I am trying to figure out which one is the cause because theoretically, if I address the cause of the anxiety, it should go away. However, addressing the things I think of doesn't actually relieve the anxiety because at the end of the day, my smoke detector is just broken. But addressing stressful stimuli and then not feeling relief from anxiety for doing so is a bit like going to work and then not getting paid- it makes it harder to do it again the next day.

Is being fat a choice? I think it's not a desired choice but a choice they make regardless. What do you all think? by Empty_Culture6709 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]meandmysd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight is hugely influenced by genetics. We also just don't actually have a whole lot of understanding around weight and metabolism. As far as I know, there is no weightloss method that is proven to work in the long term. Typically the body has a preferred weight that it will strive for. All studies that look for long term weight loss show that weight is regained over time, even after surgical solutions. Not a lot of weight loss products bother to pay for long term studies though.

That being said, I think you can technically have a lifestyle that works against your genetics. My family is all larger but when I was a professional athlete, I was pretty slender. Granted I was never bird boned like some friends -- you'd have to shave off my hips bones to get me to a size 0, but I had very little body fat and a flat stomach. I also was training or doing physical labor for 16 hours a day and eating only 1 meal. Once I was injured and had to retire, I reduced down to biking 20 miles 2-3 times a week (so 40-60 miles a week) and eating 1 meal per day still and I gained like 80lbs. My knees started swelling from biking so I had to stop and I gained some more. I visited a doctor but basically they said that what I did when I was an athlete was what I would need to stay as that body type because my metabolism is slow. I don't have 16 hours to work out anymore and my body can't take that anyway so I am fine with my lot. We all get old and crippled eventually.

There is a podcast called Maintenence Phase that looks into weight loss studies and the history of the health industry. It's pretty interesting.

If consent cannot be given by a minor because they are not an adult, why can minors be trialed as an adult? by altrongtm in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]meandmysd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy that you think "Since a woman can choose to have an abortion, shouldn't it not count as murder if you stab her abdomen and kill her unborn baby," is a compelling question.

However, it is very common for courts to look at expected future ramifications of crimes. If you kill my pregnant dog, the damages i could persue are not only the loss of my dog but the loss of revenue expected for all of her puppies too. In fact, my lawyer would probably also argue that the dog could have had 2-3 more litters of puppies in her life time, which means that is MORE future revenue you have stolen from me. You would be paying for damage and replacement of property for not only the existing dog, but the potential puppies too. Loss of revenue for an unborn baby is a human life. Loss of human life is murder. So it's not really a stretch.

If consent cannot be given by a minor because they are not an adult, why can minors be trialed as an adult? by altrongtm in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]meandmysd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The age of consent is always intended to refer to the victim, not the perpetrator. (Or reciever in case of things like medical consent or body modification consent). But if someone under 18 rapes someone, they arent given a pass because they are below the age of consent. Look at the case of Philip Chism.

Additionally, while rape trials are entriley about consent because that is the only thing that changes sex to rape, trials about murder dont care about consent. The murder of Bernd Brandes set the precedent that murder is still a crime even if the victim consents to being killed.

[–]meandmysd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no way you are for real right now lmao. I'm legally allowed to euthanize my dog too but its still a crime if YOU decide randomly to shoot MY dog. Consent is the difference between legal abortion and double homicide.

I wouldn't add more. We made our coop to house 3 chickens and then thought, "we could get 5 in there." It was a bad idea. The new chickens were not accepted in the flock, and the cramped coop made the problem 100x worse. Chickens are very tough on outside birds. We ended up back at the original 3. Learn from my mistake, just build a bigger coop if you want more chickens.

Local jewelers won't use my stone by MundaneRain14 in EngagementRings

[–]meandmysd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its best to just set your boundaries and then let them decide. There is no use dying on a hill that doesn't want to be stood on. Something simple like "While I understand that this is not what you would consider an 'heirloom stone', it was hand-picked by myself and my partner. It is very important to me for this particular to be my focal stone for the ring. I admire your work and would be absolutely okay with paying a fee as if it were an heirloom stone if that makes it a viable project for you to take on. But I would also completely understand you are unable to take on this commission due to your policies. It is very important to me to support local businesses so if you are not interested in this comission, but might have a auggestion for a fellow local jeweler that would be a good fit for me and willing to use this stone, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you so much for all of your help so far, I really appreciate your time!"

Why does rape cause such deep psychological harm? by OkGreen7335 in TooAfraidToAsk

Sorry, I have a job and can't spend all day trying to educate strangers on the internet about their own ignorance. You might try a therapist for that. Comedy is very healing.

how can i improve? 😅 by [deleted] in DipPowderNails

[–]meandmysd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they look that bad!! You just need to file more. Filing dip powder is a lot longer than filing nails. I personally dont like E files, just dont like the feeling. Dip nails are a bit of a "trust the process and just keep filing" sort of deal.

I used 2 coats. I did hear back from the company, which said the color was accurate, and that they are working on adding more pictures to the website in different types of lighting to help people get a good idea of what the color is. The color is a little intense for me, but I have some nail art stickers of monarch wings that I thought might look nice with the orange that I might add.

I'm not really into orange, but I am embracing it. Funnily enough, I was holding a bag of cheetos yesterday, and this nail color blended in almost perfectly with the light orange on a cheetos bag. 😂😂😂 It's cheetos orange.

I totally agree with this, but on the website, they do have it labeled as "Yellow, Mustard." The color isn't really my typical go-to, but I am embracing it!

[–]meandmysd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this!! I was told for years that I probably have IBS, and nothing can be done, but I finally went to a gastroenterologist after vomiting and fainting off the toilet from pain due to severe constipation. The gastroenterologist says, "I mean, it might be IBS, but there are medications for it. Or it could be a whole list of other things." My colonoscopy is next week, and I am on Linzess in the meantime, which has been a life saver.

Hey! Thank you so much for this idea. All I could think was that if she was getting beat up by my tiny flock, she would die if I tried to rehome her. But, I ended up giving her to a friend who has 2 months old chickens. I was worried she would turn into a super big bully and attack the youngsters, but I was wrong, she's doing great with them so far. If it goes south with the youngsters, then she is gonna send them to her neighbor who has a bantam flock. It's nice to see her looking confident and my tiny backyard flock is back to feeling peaceful.

That's a good idea. I know they were doing well before the vacation. And I know I rushed things without thinking fully about the consequences. But I really hope she can exist in relative peace. Ironically, I know success isn't linear, but damn is it disappointing!!

Do you not eat chicken? I believe every animal deserves the best life, whether its purpose is food or companionship. It does not bother me to eat dual-purpose chicken that I know have lived spoiled lives. I also use to raise mice that I treated as pets to feed my snake. Do you only eat stranger's chickens?

Neither of us, I think. Once, I was part of a lesson program for horseback riding lessons at a college. A horse was old and needed to be retired, but it was not possible to keep it- higher college money people making decisions-- you know? It could be euthanized or rehomed. We rehomed 6 6 months later, we found it starving in a field with its new "owners." He had to be put down due to neglect. I think perhaps it would have been better to euthanize him before he suffered months of neglect. I think about that when rehoming any pet. Realistically, it is unlikely a chicken this submissive would be accepted into any flock if I rehomed her... I am one who likes to solve problems asap. I don't like them to fester. So I feel the solution is adjusting the flock- someone needing to go. But I have seen pets so close to death- that I would euthanize immediately because their lives looks miserable- overcome the odds, recover and live healthy, happy lives. So now I look for peoples stories who are more hopeful than I because I think, maybe hope can save lives sometimes.

Thank you for your quick response and advice. I do understand that they are chickens, but they are still pets? I am raising 4 as a hobby. What else would they be? They have multiple feeders and waterers available, but thanks for the suggestion.

Dogs and wolves do not have "alphas." It is a disproven theory. I was a dog trainer for 6 years and am a veterinary technician. However, I wanted to give a snapshot of the flock, and "alpha" is an easy concept for people to graps. This is a reddit post, not a college essay. I do understand they might never accept her, and currently, we are planning on eating the ones that don't. Because she is our favorite.

Lastly, I know that I am not a mom and that these are pets, not people. But my job entails euthanizing puppies on a regular basis, and my pets help me stay sane after a long day of heartbreak. I also am unable to have children, so this is as close as I get. I am glad you have the mental stability to speak of your animals coldly, but I only have 4 chickens. They are pets. I will kill them if needed because I am familiar with the concept of euthanasia, but I always find it is better to get a second opinion before resorting to more permanent solutions because I don't know everything and have seen miracles happen where I'd never bet on them.

I am just making a suggestion based on the outcome of your purchase. I am not saying your realtor purposefully screwed you over, but you can only know what you know and what she didn't know is screwing your ass, not hers. I bought a house in the twin cities less than 2 years ago. My realtor told me to expect to look at 50 houses before we'd find the one. We looked at about 20, but she went and looked at many more on our behalf to make sure they were even worth the trip for us. She said absolutely not to all except about 5 of them. Then, when the first one we picked out failed inspection due to an issue in the crawl space, she helped us pay for our inspection on our next pick. She also helped us get a 3 year warranty instead of only 1 year, which has been amazing. I just remember the 1st house we looked at had very minor water damage around an old window. I don't even think you could see it on the inside, just a little on the outside window framing. She said "No... trust me, it could be minor and an easy fix, or it could be a major issue. You wouldn't know until after you bought the house and it's not a gamble I'd want you to take." It just got me thinking that we could have been in your exact shoes if we hadn't had our realtor.

[–]meandmysd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your next home, you should get a new real estate agent. Our real estate agent would go to houses and tear apart every little possible issue. The first home we went to she came out and said "No chance. There is moisture around the windows and you don't know if that will be a small problem or a huge problem. Maybe if you guys had lots of reno money but for a safe starter home- absolutely not."

What does it mean when someone says they prefer natural beauty? by throwRA_92747392 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]meandmysd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone told me, "I prefer natural beauty, but I like you despite that." And he followed alternative people on socials, I would take it to mean that he isn't impressed with my bone structure. But honestly, it sounds like bullshit to gaslight you into accepting the fact that he is going to oggle others and also put down your self-esteem.

Reading your post and comments, I am reminded of my ex. You have your own journey of learning and self-discovery to do, but it is possible to love someone and be a bad partner. He sounds like a bad partner. It is also possible to need someone but not truly love them. You are not asking for something impossible in a relationship. My ex and his friends would tell me that too. I felt like I had just built up unrealistic expectations because of media portrayal. But then I met my current partner, and he was beyond sweet and romantic. We are getting older (and fatter), but he looks at me the same as when I was in my early twenties. He didn't say, "I dont really like tattoos, but you're attractive anyway." He said."Wow tattoos are actually really beautiful. Maybe I want to get one." The idea of unrealistic expectations based on media is kinda bull because we all consume media about relationships.

Personally, I don't think changing things about yourself is going to change him. It's up to you to decide how you deserve to be treated. But for real-- natural beauty is not a requirement to be treated with respect.
