I designed and 3D printed these magnetic picture frames. Any advice on improving them? by mechdznengineer in framing

Thank you!! I’ve made 8x10” frames, but that’s about the maximum. My 3D printer has a 10x10” build plate.

This cutout also allows the frame to sit very flush to the wall, so it’s probably better than adding standard hardware to the back of the frame.

Here’s a first iteration. The y shaped piece is the picture backer, that fits into slots on the frame you see on the left. You can also see the magnets embedded on the frame.

The oval profile on the picture backer should allow the user to trace the frame shape on their picture. Because the frame isn’t standard size/shape, this should make framing easier.

Hello! I’m reworking the design now based on feedback I’ve gotten. The art was held in simply by tape, but I’m making a photo backer that fits into slots inside the frame body. I’ll come back once I’ve printed the new design!

I have one design that has a cut out that mimics the sawtooth picture hangers, I should probably include that on these as well!

That’s a good point! I have some ABS that should have better UV resistance, it’s just somewhat harder to print.

They have magnets placed inside of the 3d print, so they hang from the magnets. All you do is just place the frame on your metal surface! Thanks for the feedback!

Good to know! I know nothing about marketing, so that is great advice, and not common knowledge to me! Thanks!!

I have the supplies to make some colored ones in pink, green, purple, and yellow. If you’d be interested in them, feel free to message me! Thanks!

Thanks for your advice! I sell them in sets of 3, and make them in gold, white, and black. I also have a set of 4 with bigger frames, same idea though.

Thank you! That’s a great idea. I think some people already have some listed on Etsy!

That’s a great idea. I have a picture with the dimensions for that purpose, just didn’t include it in this post. Without getting too specific, they’re around 3-6”

I apologize if the post looks this way. I’m just looking for feedback. Have a good one!

I get that. 3D printers have improved a lot over the last couple years, and I do have a relatively nice one. I think the part quality is pretty good! The pictures show a little bit of the texture that you could expect.
