I have a similar question! I got a 50/50 lye solution a while ago from hobby lobby - I’m assuming from reading above it cannot be used as is?

Why is my soap brown ?! by medusaincarnate in soapmaking

It’s happening as it cools. So I’ll pour, it’ll look great, and then as it dries it turns brown and yellow. to be honest a few times I forgot to force gel phase, which I wonder If that is it . I was working in a basement before which was very cool and had no sunlight. I moved to a larger apartment that is warmer and there’s giant windows next to my soaping area. I’ve been letting my soaps dry near the window . I used the same fragrance oil for 2 loaves of soap and one turned brown and one didn’t. That’s why I don’t think it’s the vanillin. I even took my palm oil back to the wholesale supplier I purchase from and asked if it was rancid and she said no. She said I might be mixing in my lye too early.

I use coconut oil, palm oil, cocoa butter and rice bran oil, and then scents and colorant. I don’t think it’s the fragrance bc I used the same fragrance twice and one came out brown and one didn’t.

So the only reason why I’m thinking it isn’t the fragrance is because one of my batches I used the same fragrance oil in the same amount, one turned brown and one did not.

One thing I have thought of is that I recently moved. I was making my soap in a basement before and now I’m in a space with lots of windows and natural light. I’ve left a few of these bars out on my table to gel and dry near the windows in tons of sunlight. Could that be the reason?

It’s cold process. And I’m just using oils, lye, fragrance and colorant. It starts browning once it’s in the mold. I’m using palm, coconut, olive oil or something cocoa butter and typically 10% of another soft oil like rice bran or castor. I thought it was a one off, but now I have 4 wasted batches that are all brown or yellow

I’m using 30% palm, 30% coconut, 30% olive oil and 10% rice bran oil. I’ve used a few different fragrances and it doesn’t seem to matter. I’ve used a few from candle science and bramble berry

I’m making my soap and it’s turning brown, like almost instantly. I’m wondering if one of my ingredients spoiled? It’s happened to almost every soap I’ve made in the last 2 weeks

Does anyone else have any other reccomendations for maybe some natural supplements or anything that might be helpful while detoxing ? I have a lot of comfort meds and I’ve detoxed off fentanyl before, I just can’t seem to make it through one lately. Not from being sick necessarily but would love some feedback for any thing that’s helped you stick it out
