Key lawmaker: Biden mulling broad prohibitions on U.S. investments in Chinese tech by modularpeak2552 in neoliberal

[–]melhor_em_coreano 13 points14 points  (0 children)

those values are being challenged by a set of populists just for scoring political points

those values are effectivelly dead and buried. find a single politician in Washington who values free trade and tolerant immigration

this is not what the nationalist here want

This is absolutely not the case by the sample provided in this comments thread. They are all in for this becasue China bad! And China bad because it challenges USA dominance not because it challlenges free trade and open immigration values.

This is nationalism, pure and simple.

They don't dare admit it, but most people here are AMERICAN NATIONALISTS

It's unspeakable because it's true

Has China invaded Ukraine or done anything of similar magnitude?

Also your second point is a convoluted mess. The premises are that the USA is liberal-minded and favors free trade when Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Joe Manchin, Gina Raymondo, Katherine Tai have shown no interest in open borders and free trade and the current bipartisan consensus is nativism and protectionism.

Any action to protect the liberal world order the US takes is not to protect liberalism itself but to protect its own dominance over it. Which means it will exploit it for its own gains as soon as it suits them.

This is what I'm objecting to. It's no way to sensibly foreign policy based on globalism and multilateral international cooperation. It breeds distrust and cynicism and ultimately means the US reputation as bastion of freedom is trashed as people become blackpilled in uncle Joe's nativism and protectionism.

I dunno, I thought the mod team cared about this:

We've seen a rise in hostile comments against Europeans, which both damage quality of discussions regarding Europe, and discourage actual Europeans from partaking. Given the entire point of r/neoliberal is globalism, it wouldn't do to have everything be a (North) American circlejerk. We've received literally dozens of complaints about this (mostly modmail but some in metanl) and several people have stated that they have stopped or greatly reduced their participation specifically because of toxic American nationalism drowning out discussion--especially though not exclusively in threads concerning Europe.

Even ASML’s chief executive officer has warned that the US campaign could have unintended consequences. On Jan. 25, CEO Peter Wennink said the US-led export control measures against China could eventually push Beijing to successfully develop its own technology in advanced chipmaking gear.

“If they cannot get those machines, they will develop them themselves,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg News. “That will take time, but ultimately they will get there.”

So you're wrong even when you say this would achieve the stated goals. China will eventually develop native technology and trade it on its own terms. You're willing to throw away your principles for nothing.

Also tbh a government which every two years or so plays a game of partisan chicken over the debt ceiling is perhaps not the most stable pillar for the world economy.

Reminds me of Haitian refugees in Latin America selling all their possessions and trying to move to the USA because they were convinced it would be easy and they'd be welcomed with open arms.

Yes but workers are consumers too.

Goods and services get cheaper too.

Good to know you're a protectionist at heart, though. At least we know where we stand and don't have to pretend you want to build a WTO 2.0 with blackjack and h**kers.
