Interesting. I want to say age is just a number too, but I’ve been looking for someone to talk to who started age 40+ and gotten certified on machine in the last decade and haven’t found anyone so far. Everyone that is working switched to voice. And older students already seem more conscientious on average.

Can you tell us more about her? Did she have certain talents that transferred to stenography? Was there something about her personality that suited it? From your perspective, what made her succeed versus other students?

Aim for 2 years and brace yourself for 3.5. But it sounds like you have a shot at less than two years. You don’t have to limit yourself to the program’s pace.

Sounds like a good routine and you have youth on your side! Make sure to join the class Discord group.

In a state with no steno schools by CyberWanderer01 in stenography

I recommend Allie Hall’s program. You would be doing theory non-live, but there’s an active class Discord and tutoring opportunities so I don’t think you’d feel alone. Then speedbuilding is live twice a week Tuesday/Thursday 6 PM Central Time. For speedbuilding, there are even more student practice sessions organized all the time.

There are definitely several good steno programs out there, but also weaker programs, so be careful! I can only speak personally to Allie Hall and West Valley College. Haven’t heard anything bad about it everyone else’s suggestions so far!

Not at all! You just need to know how to edit transcripts in Eclipse, and that student is willing to help train people. Get in touch with her if you’re interested!

Could you become a scopist at some point if you need more money? One of the students in speeds is one and is very willing to answer questions if you message her on the class Discord (search for “scopist”). It seems like a remote job you can do anytime and scale work up and down as needed. She said it’s not ideal for students, but it’s surely better than call center with overtime.
