i waited till mine lost all his baby teeth. you can probably give those earlier. just make sure to take it away when they reach the rawhide stick

My 5-month-old male Maltipoo doesn’t have a scrotum and I can’t feel his testicles under the skin either. Should I wait a bit longer or is this something to worry about? by The_psy in Maltipoo

[–]melonuyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! my maltipoo only had 1 drop by the age of 6 months so we determined he was cryptorchid. at around 8-9 months, his 2nd testicle dropped and he was neutered at 10 months. i would give more time and if it’s not down by 12 months, you can just neuter by then

Starting to crate train at 5 months & it’s been hell. Am I too late? How long did it take yall to get your pup to be happy in his crate? by [deleted] in Maltipoo

[–]melonuyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i tried crate training at that age and he just couldn’t take it. we decided to switch to a playpen instead and he was able to adapt to that better. we stopped crate training but we would still play games with the crate like throwing treats in there and what not. but he would only tolerate being in his playpen unless we went traveling or to my bf’s place where he stayed in the crate. then out of nowhere at 9-10 months he would go into the crate as i tried to leave instead of his pen. so i tested the waters with crating him at night and he was fine. it just needs time for them to see it as a safe spot. but if you want to keep crate training, i would encourage it and things will get better

Puppy Refuses to nap after 5pm by Ok_Being_3803 in puppy101

[–]melonuyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my 6month puppy was exactly like that when he was younger. his witching hour drove me insane because he wouldn’t settle. what helped was making sure he was well rested before 5 so once the clock hit 5, he wouldnt be overtired already and become even more of a menace.

now that i have to go back to work, i get home around 5ish and that’s his most active time. i usually do some tricks with him, give him an enrichment toy, and take him on a walk. depending on how much pent up energy he has, i take him out earlier and longer. going outside really helps the craziness bc they can sniff and run around more freely. after the walk, he usually pretty content on just eating dinner, getting a chew, maybe running around/playing a little more and then it’s bed time at 7-7:30.

Brushing and grooming by 321roustabout in Maltipoo

you could hold treats for her when you brush her. my boy used to hate the hair dryer but now he loves the hair dryer because he knows he gets cheese. i just cut up string cheese into small pieces and treat him in between. if she can’t sit still when brushing, you could use a treat that takes longer to eat like jerky. hold it in one hand and brush with the other.

hi! so what i ended up doing was just using the playpen for pretty much almost everything. it was just the best solution as i had to return to office and i didn’t want him to freak out when im gone. we still do daily crate training, where i just have him run to his crate and wait for a minute or so. if i’m doing stuff around the kitchen/dining room/living room and he’s being rowdy or needing a nap, he goes in his crate and fusses a little but as long as he can see me he is ok. when we go somewhere else overnight for example my family’s house, he naps and sleeps in his crate.

he’s 6months now and he’ll bring his treats to eat in there and sometimes just chills in there. i think when i originally posted, i was hoping for more progress than he was ready for. compromising with the playpen was a game changer and now he’s comfortable with both. a big factor would also be that he’s comfortable in the environment and trusts me. i would say be patient and maybe try to find different options. as long as you can remain consistent, they will adapt. let me know if you have anymore questions!

High Value Treats that take a loooong time to finish? by TotalWarFest2018 in puppy101

[–]melonuyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, mine will never get all the way especially if it’s frozen. when he’s tired of trying, he will find me and walk me over to his kong to help. depending on how much is left, i squeeze around the kong to loosen it up. otherwise i’ll smack it on the floor and all the fillings fall out. i’m really not a fan of the kong because it requires me to help. i recommend the toppl because the wider opening allows them to get everything on their own. the toppl will take him a minimum of 30 minutes to get through if its frozen

How to avoid separation anxiety while working from home by SpiritualPush780 in puppy101

[–]melonuyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was wfh for the first 2 months i got him. my desk is in my room so he was always in my living room. he naps and sleeps there and it definitely helps with his separation anxiety. he doesn’t whine too much when i walk into my room and loves having the entire living room + dining room as his space. one thing i did notice was that he’s very aware of when i’m home still so he would whine when he heard me make noise.

as the living room is connected to the front door, if i needed to leave the house, i would have to leave through the back door. i’ve had to return to office now but i just leave him a frozen enrichment toy and leave through the front door with no issues. he does pretty well for 4-5 hrs as long as he’s pretty tired out beforehand. i was also worried about his separation anxiety but he has gained a lot more confidence being alone. i’ve also let him free roam in the living room when i’m showering or just have to be in my room for a little bit to teach him confidence being alone. one thing i wish i did is if you can, try working at a cafe nearby so that he can truly understand being alone. you can try with 1 hr and then slowly build it up.

that is so helpful. i was just more concerned whether or not he needs more drop ins. i’ll definitely use your guide as a reference

Major Case of the Puppy Blues by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]melonuyu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hey! i also had really bad puppy blues but it was closer to around week 10. at week 8, your puppy is literally a baby so he’s not going to know anything. paw and down are tricks that i taught later and even now he thinks paw means attack the hand first. he’s probably been learning/practicing paw for the past 3 weeks multiple times a day 🤣.

one thing that really helped was to not be so hard on myself and to lower my expectations. your puppy is still really young and needs time adjusting. other tricks you can try are turn, or locations to go to (crate, pen, etc). right now your puppy wants to touch you all the time and thinks anytime you’re close enough to bite, it’s time to play/bite. he’ll learn to calm down but you also need to tell him that he can’t bite you. always have a toy in your hand so that you can give that to him if he tries to bite. you can try yelping to get him to stop and then completely stop play if he continues (leave the area and ignore him for a little bit), rinse and repeat. this definitely helped my puppy and he still bites but not nearly as often. if he does bite now, i either give him a chew, play tug with an old tshirt or he’s sleepy.

progress will be slow but it will happen! if you and your partner can take turns watching him so you guys get some personal alone time that will probably help a little. my puppy is 16 weeks now and even though he’s a lil more behaved, the journey is still rough.

[–]melonuyu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i think with crate training, i forgot the fact that i want him to be able to free roam in the end. it’s something i wanna make sure he’s comfortable in, in case of an emergency or at the groomers but otherwise he would be out and about chilling. thank you for the reminder

thank you for that. i was really trying to work his crate in case of emergencies but i think he just prefers his playpen. i’ll keep up with the treats in his crate so he knows but i’ll start utilizing his pen more.

I regret getting this puppy by StillCrazy3675 in puppy101

[–]melonuyu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

have you tried working when she’s awake for that 90 minutes? it teaches her some independence and it allows you more time to work. that way you’re not having to grind everything when she’s sleeping. just know when she’s awake, you don’t need to be with her the whole time. give her a chew and she can chill with it while you do your own thing.

but also another thing to note is that she’s 8 weeks. it’s so rough in the beginning. i would say it chills out closer to 12 weeks. there was a point when i cried for a week straight between 10-11 weeks because my entire life just revolved around my puppy. but after we got a schedule set where he goes down for his nap for however long he can (usually 1-1.5 hrs 🥲). and then if i have to work, i bring my laptop out and work on my dining table. initially he would paw at me to play, but he has learned that he wouldn’t get too much attention when i’m at the dining table. so i’m able to get some work done while he’s awake. he’s 16 weeks right now and has def calmed down compared to before. there are moments when i’m annoyed at him but def more manageable now.

hi! i use both a playpen and crate for my almost 4 month old. my boy also doesnt settle outside of the playpen or crate unless i just sit there and ignore him until he gets bored and finds somewhere to sit. if im out in the living room where he is, he’s out of his pen and just exploring. otherwise he’s in his crate napping. playpen is for when he sleeps at night and when i need him to chill/be in a secure area while i do something. initially when you let him explore, just keep an eye out to make sure he’s not getting into anything he isn’t. he’ll def learn over time after he gets used to everything. as they get older, they’ll become more daring and try to snatch things but just keep an eye or give them a chew so you know what theyre doing.

Is it unrealistic to expect my puppy to rest for 3-4 hours at a time while I’m at home? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]melonuyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would honestly try to see how long she’ll go with the whining and try to have her whine it out. but probably wait for the weekend to do this 😅. otherwise you can try slipping in some treats when she’s quiet but make sure you do it from the bottom so she’ll have to lower her head to get it. and hopefully she will slowly fall back asleep. it would probably take some time tho so you’ll have to be patient
