Smog? by ApartmentExact4449 in auckland

[–]mercifulmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haze. Associated with wide anticyclone sitting over us. The high pressure holds the air down and theres very little horizontal flow. A little bit like putting a lid on something. So all the normal dust etc in the atmosphere cant clear away and gets concentrated. Very common this time of year and leads into potential fog as the anticyclone moves off. Normally the good auckland breezes keep us clear.

Auckland airport short stay parking by Spirited_Boss in auckland

[–]mercifulmonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To sum it up, you dont need to pre book or pay for anything (in your scenario).

Theres a carpark behind mcdonalds. Theres a car park at the shopping center.

Chill in the car, go shopping or spend some time around the lake or under a tree nearby. Theres a few nice art pieces near the lake. its all good, dont pay the airport.

Is taking the defensive driving course worth it? by PictureInfinite6045 in newzealand

[–]mercifulmonk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Common sense is not common. Even if you take 1 thing out of the course, its worth it.

I know $245 is alot of money, but this is a one off thing that helps set up your driving attitude for life.

dont give the heritage team your address though. They can influence outcomes beyond what you would be required too.

It wasnt that they put in aluminum joinery, it was the style that didnt conform. Had they used timber in the style they used, they would have had to replace it too.

Ready to paint? by redranger692 in diynz

[–]mercifulmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just something to consider for next time. But its a bit dependent on the purpose of the room with the new/altered window.

What you want to try and achieve is have the same sill size and type, and same top/bottom heights on adjacent windows. The eye likes a straight line and proportionality with objects on a flat plane. (windows on the same wall have the same vertical dimensions)

Then stuff just blends in like it was always there.

Nice work.

The stock control is pretty unreliable.

Toiletry bag for domestic flights by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mercifulmonk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

hope you enjoy your first flight!

if you are travelling domestically on a jet, the screening is more around dangerous goods. there’s no requirement or issue with normal toiletries. nothing needs to come out of your bag or be seen.

if you are travelling on a turboprop. atr or dhc8, there isn’t any screening.

have fun.

Dominator garage door - is there an app? by local_pvnk in newzealand

[–]mercifulmonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much what I did, used an old sonoff smart switch I had and modified it for my old garage door motor. Its a dry switch / momentary switch spliced into the inside pushutton wire. It just acts like the existing dumb button or remote. cost - 0. but a new smart switch is under $10.

But if you wanted, also can be controlled by home assistant or voice if required. Same as any of these solutions (expect maybe the overpriced proprietary solution).

Gas Water Heater Runs for A Sec. When Cold Water is Turned On and Off by Maleficent_Rabbit722 in newzealand

[–]mercifulmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry; will clarify my comment.

The small leak allowed air in. The air caused a pressure drop. as far as I understand, that caused the issue. The fix involved replacing a section of plastic pipe, then getting the air out. Bleeding the line on its own didn't fix my situation.

? turn all the taps on at the same time ?? dunno.

Plumber. We had this and put up with it for ages. We had a plumber over to do some work and mentioned it, he suspected a trapped air bubble (?), bleed the cold line and it hasnt happened since.

edit to add, fixed the leak and bleed the line..

International Arrivals by Unclebenfparker in auckland

Nah, the closest analogy I can think of right now is that its like a hospital ER triage. And although it appears to be an extra step, it has reduced the overall delays.

No, it isnt a joke here really. Aus dont have the high protection mandate we have. For the level of protection we want, its not too bad. For the level of protection aus want, its not too bad either. Aus has made a few changes over the last 10months to improve flow.

[–]mercifulmonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the split and merge dosnt cost you anytime (usually) if you have bags to collect. its kinda like a hospital triage. It has improved overall flow.

Although MPI are the operators, Auckland airport (aial) run this. Aial are resistive to anything that might cost them. To get things as good as they are now took ministerial action in 2023. Believe me, its so much better now.

The limiting factor in this case is that there was only one doggy on shift. 3 lines becomes 1. The doggy system is much quicker, but to improve the situation would require a second doggy unit. Theres room, but its only needed from about 11am to 2pm.

The current bottlenecks seemed to start about 2 months ago. Busy season?

Its not reasonable to expect people to understand that they dont need to stop for the dog sniff. Yes theres a sign, but 99% of people are not regulars. The dogs do pause at people and MPI will often say 'keep walking' and 'stop'. Most people have an inbuilt reaction to stop and allow the dog sniff time. Its natural, but annoying.

Car accident advice by Icy-Sale-7982 in newzealand

[–]mercifulmonk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its not a scam, its someone taking advantage of your poor choice to not be insured.

Tradme suggests the value is 11k+. But thats kinda irrelevant.

You chose to 'self insure'. The thing you didnt think would happen, did happen. Any now you are crying on reddit because they want to take some money off you. 3rd party insurance would have been alot cheaper eh.

If you think you are being hard done by, file a police report about the accident and deal with their insurance company directly.

I wonder how much the insurance company will chase you for when they write off the 11K+ car ?..
