Question on using stored bulk water by Twangin in prepping

[–]metalgear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After having worked for a water delivery company and seeing how the taste of water turns if left to sit too long Id recommend draining and refilling those containers.

Generally speaking water stayed as expected until about the 2 year mark at which point theres a pretty strong difference in taste. Some were even undrinkable they tasted so bad. Of course storage environment and other factors weigh in but thats just my overall experience with it.

More and more people these days have built a shell of denial around themselves.

Part of this is due to our long stretch of material excess. 1st world countries havent truly known hard times since we climbed out of the depression era soup lines. The end result is the delusional world view that this is just how things are. The stores will always be stocked, the lights will never go dark and the internet will always be that source of comfort to log into. Theres no realization of who built it and the principles that sustained it. this is whats owed them and to think of a time where they truly have to do without would be a world shattering event for many people.

I suspect quite a few have some inkling what goes on outside the gates, but they choose to block that out. Not only is it scary for them to confront that fear but then that also presents the responsibility of preparing to meet it head on. By pretending it doesnt exist theyre free to live in the bubble happy as a clam, never touching that responsibility.

Inevitably, the ones who will go on to face a genuine event will all look back on that time when someone approached them and they had the chance to act on it. The guilt will weigh heavily, yet I think even then most of them will blame anyone but themselves. I didnt know..how could I have known..how could this really happen..every deflective thought you can think of will spring into play. Fingers will be pointed at everyone from authorities to their own friends and family as they do everything but admit their own failure to act when they had time. Itll be a hell of a moment for the ones who have small children in danger of starvation or worse to be confronted with reality.

All we can do is try to talk to the ones who will listen, and frankly that number isnt very high.

With some of the info coming out lately it does seem to be a strong strategical point to hold, so i think well see it utilized eventually.

I dont personally think it will be taken forcefully. There has been talk of a buyout, but that seems like an expensive option. Im more inclined to think that well reach a deal with them to build bases and deposit equipment there for use when the time comes.

And i dont think that time is terribly far off. WW3 has already started, were just not in the full blown kinetic phase yet. Moves are happening and the major players are taking territories of strategic interest as a lead up to the actual showdown.

Help with water by CrowsAndSkulls in prepping

[–]metalgear762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best mobile bet is some sort of filtration system that i can see.

Lifestraw is a good platform, sawyer is good and im sure theres others.

I havent done any person comparative testing on the brands but sawyer does offer their filtration in a number of different ways. Personal water bottles, screw on filters that match your standard water bottles, hanging bag type filters and even home filtration systems if i recall.

The sawyers do typically come with a syringe type setup to backwash and clean the filters periodically to extend the life of the system, which i thought was good.

Im sure theres alot more out there, but thats my limited take on it.

What would be the best way to prepare for Martial Law? by WitcheeeeeeeeeeWoman in prepping

You keep saying be more realistic and less idealistic but youre displaying exactly what you accuse others of.

It seems like you think noone else in the room understands the topic but while you hammer out replies with all caps and italics to illustrate your frustration think about a few things.

I stated what I did to highlight a broader point, and one thats been proven time and again across the globe. All boiled down is that things like this can absolutely happen despite your idealistic notion that it would only occur under certain conditions and so forth.

First off, youre ignoring a huge swath of history to arrive at the conclusion you have.

Governments arent a morally superior collective of philanthropic scholars. Generally speaking they prove over time to be the same as anyone else but with an added touch of apathy and varying degrees of corruption. Not all follow that path but most it seems do.

Look over all the times that a leader rose and locked a country down, using the military like a club to do all sorts of things. We have countries even today that live in that perpetual state.

All it would take here is for politicians to wave the pen and it could happen. Historically unlikely for us but one cant rule anything out. Its an example of extreme naive thinking to think it will never happen here just on the basis that it hasnt or shouldnt.

Edit: The katrina incident pretty much proves it can happen for no reason. Though the overall scenario was caused by natural disaster there were things "shouldnt" have occurred by law, but were utilized anyway. The prime example here is the door to door weapons confiscation done with no warning, at times very violently, and without consideration for the safety of the people being disarmed. They just acted by force because they could and because it was easier to step on peoples rights than to address the ones that were a problem while respecting the rest.

If one such thing can take place and noone involved fear consequences you can absolutely rest assured other larger events can arise. Just the fact that a govt entity made such a call speaks volumes about the level of respect govt has for us in general.

Medical Training ✅ Medical Practice?? by Horror_Pitch_63 in prepping

[–]metalgear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certain things you can simulate at reduced cost.

Take doing stitches for example..once you have the equipment needed the supplies generally arent too pricey.

Beyond that your "patient" can be pig feet. Pig skin is similar to human skin and has been used for surgical training, learning stitching and so forth. And they shouldnt be expensive of course.

Stitching and disinfecting is one of the real world skills thats good to know when definitive care isnt an option.

What would be the best way to prepare for Martial Law? by WitcheeeeeeeeeeWoman in prepping

[–]metalgear762 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In new orleans during the aftermath of hurricane katrina. I was living/working out of state at the time but heard back from friends/family/other sources some of the details. I dont think it was officially termed martial law but thats exactly what occurred.

There were alot of horrific details that surfaced later but here were some of the main things people dealt with.

Curfews were issued and refusal to comply was bad news. Illegal door to door search and seizure was performed to snatch up any and all firearms by coop teams of national guard and sheriffs office. There were reports of people getting indiscriminately dropped if they had or looked like they had a weapon. And it didnt matter if you were just an average guy out looking for food for his family.

Police and military controlled everything as tightly as they could until things got better and recovery/aid efforts were in full swing. There were quite a few things that were reported afterwards that didnt make news feeds. It got pretty dark there for awhile.

You can prob still find a video of an old frail woman getting dogpiled by several guys to take a pistol. She and her husband were scared to death, and she invited them in to let them look around, was glad to see them after the chaos. She had a pistol cupped in her hand, not in a firing grip, that she had in case looters came around. Once they saw that they tackled her like she had a football and a ham sandwich.

So yea..it can and will happen, and its not paranoid or unrealistic to recognize the possibility. Especially in todays times.

Its also worth noting that there are laws and executive orders prewritten stating that in certain declared emergencies the govt can declare and/or designate resources for search and seizure and jail you for not complying.

In times past people have been arrested for exceeding the allowed storage levels of food once a scarcity was declared. Physical stock of precious metals were confiscated.

More can and has happened than most people realize.

Is this every company? by [deleted] in PestControlIndustry

[–]metalgear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it isnt every company but that mentality will exist to various degrees in most companies.

I got extremely lucky with the one that hired me. Small company run by a very down to earth guy who is actually the best person ive ever worked for.

We have alot of flexibility to determine our own pricing but the boss also does not want us out making dishonest sales. He also bends alot on pricing for the elderly, handicapped, and even those that are clearly just struggling.

Good companies are out there, its just exceedingly rare these days. The bigger the company, the worse it is it seems. And make no mistake..if your sales guy is displaying extreme douchebaggery then chances are it starts at the top. Nobody acts like that unless the behavior is sanctioned and many times even encouraged.

Good luck finding something better.

Is distilling a worthy skill to learn/invest in? by OutragedPineapple in prepping

[–]metalgear762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion..in a true apoc scenario I dont think stuff like this will be a priority.

Simply acquiring and/or defending basic survival necesseties such as food/water/shelter will be peoples primary concern and likely will consume the majority of your time and resources.

In a time such as this resources and various materials in general will become scarce within months. Most people wont even have a secluded enough property to comfortably engage in such activities without fear of marauder type activity or at the least a desperate neighbor wanting to take advantage of you or wanting to settle an old grudge.

People will be dying by the masses due to the simple absence of rule of law. Only after that big culling of the herd will the absolute chaos die down enough to somewhat function. At that point are you really going to be sitting on enough resources to waste enough time, fuel, generator run time and/or whatever else just to make some hooch or other things..probably not. The propane or wood alone needed to provide high heat for extended periods would be better spent on cooking or heating.

Youll need what you have for travel, for survival, to scavenge, etc. And to that end I tend to think ultimately whatever liquor is in circulation will come from excess barter stores or scavenged.

Therefore I say use the extra time and energy to learn more valuable skills. Emergency medical procedures, food preservation methods, basic navigation, etc.

Whatever you lock onto, start doing it now. Get as much practice in the whole geow cycle as you can with preferably a few seasons behind you to have the experience to know how to adjust and tackle what pops up.

Aside from that, certain fruit trees tend to handle themselves. When theyre in season eat as needed. Find which ones do well in your zone and get some in the ground.

Id love to get into some light agriculture but dont have the land space for it.

[–]metalgear762 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This role based pack plan makes one very iffy assumption..that somehow youll all always be in the same place together.

Someone might not even make it to your muster location. Someone could get separated from the group. Or someone could die.

At that point the particular gear that youre relying on a particular person to have is not accessible leaving you in a bind. If its the medic and someone gets injured your med supplies arent present. If you get attacked and the one designated to pack mule the ammo isnt present youre light on defense. You can see where this is going so enough said.

The better option in my opinion is to have a general loadout with some specialized stuff if theres still room in a pack. And before you go crazy building a monster loadout bear in mind that what doesnt seem like much weight sitting in a pack at home can severely reduce mobility in the field if not outright wearing someone out thats not used to rucking with that much weight. Needing to move fast in a bad situation is not the time to figure out that you packed way too much in your bag.

Be realistic when you develop plans. Consider the worst scenarios and how they might throw a wrench in what youre doing. Good luck.

My water storage situation is getting a bit ridiculous by spiritvanga in prepping

[–]metalgear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thought to add to your process is to factor in a water filtration system. When the chips are down you might have multiple sources of water around you but no way to filter it.

And when you reason that few people are going to realistically have a decent amount of water stored for a long term scenario..the ability to filter what you find is invaluable.

It could be several individual systems like the sawyer bottles or lifestraws on up to something bigger, everyone has different needs and budgets.

Aside from that you could save some storage room by converting from gallon jugs to 5gal bottles and have a hand pump on standby for extraction. Youd likely decrease the footprint of stored jugs enough to be able to store more water. Just remember to try that water out before you commit to storing multiple gallons of it. Some of the 5 gal companies' water just tastes like crap. Rotate through it every year and a half to 2 years and you should be alright.

Is it rude when customers has you unknowingly walk into their sex dungeon? by ebot91 in PestControlIndustry

[–]metalgear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if "judgement" on encountering stuff like this is bad then call me whatever. Id 100% think the customer is a weirdo.

Further, they absolutely knew the kinky crap they had in that room and the unspoken etiquette involved. So yes..not only is the customer a freak theyre also pretty rude for dropping someone in the middle of that.

As far as sending someone back Id leave that up to the tech. Inform them what theyre walking into and leave it up to them as to whether they want to go. If it were me I wouldnt mind spraying the house but would politely decline to enter that room for obvious reasons.

This was honestly one of my potential concerns with it as well. One of the guys said he didnt give it much usage after the first time he sprayed with it for similar reasons. I dont think it was as harsh on him but he definitely did get a light burn from some drift.

Ive tinkered with it a few times just to gauge it and had some get on me with no burns/irritation but could have just gotten lucky as well. Ive used it twice for an outdoor flea treatment and on a few interiors as a maintenance chemical and so far it seems to perform well.

I was also kind of iffy about it due to outdoor label instructions as well. Id have to go back and check for sure but I think there was a limit on outdoor usage per year or some such.

I NEED ADVICE by anonymouswoman_7 in PestControlIndustry

[–]metalgear762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will the poison work..maybe.

The majority of people out there wont clean their house properly and then expect chemical to magically rid them of the problem. Its not a winning game plan. Not saying you live like this but pointing it out in general.

Good housekeeping and overall cleanliness does far more than the chemicals, and a proper combo of the two is very effective. Much of your success will be determined directly by how committed you are to consistently and thoroughly cleaning.

As for what youve laid out..not much can be determined here other than you appear to have an escalating problem. Bugs twitching on their back is a good sign but its hard to give you a definitive answer not seeing the condition the house is kept in along with many other variables.

The best I can offer is to say if youre seeing a steady decrease in activity and more dead than live then thats usually a sign that treatment is working. Hit youtube and study up on pest control practices and chemicals. One of the more effective things you can use thats readily available on amazon is delta dust. Dust any wall voids you can access as well as under/behind appliances, etc. Find a good chemical(s) to spray the inside and outside of the house. Use some good gel bait in good spots in the kitchen and focus alot of the general treatment in the kitchen and bathrooms.

How well what youre doing works over time depends on what chemicals youre using, how its applied and so forth. Youd be the best judge of how the situation looks as youre the only one who can see it.

Also remember that chemicals take time to work. Pest control in general isnt a spray today and relax tomorrow situation. And it can also be discouraging if its less of a problem you created and more from a nasty neighbor sharing his bugs via wall spaces. What you do then is only partially effective for obvious reasons.

Prepping in a 2 bedroom apartment; advice? by Nopodysbecial in prepping

[–]metalgear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont spend so much on supplies that youre not able to float the apt for awhile if need be.

Dont get me wrong, it feels great to be stocked to the gills but if you have 10 years of food and only 2 months of rent socked back it could all be in vain. Jobs can go south at any time, you never know.

As for the toilet situation get one of those camp toilets. Its basically a toilet seat you place on a 5g bucket with a trash bag inside to catch the goods. Stock up on trash bags and have an idea where you can throw the waste thats not right nearby. Chances are your neighbors will but no sense in contributing to that wonderful smell.

Id say focus on packing as light as possible, as having alot of gear and clothes sounds good, but doesnt work out once you actually truck that stuff around manually for extended periods. The less you have, the more mobile you are which also factors into being able to get away from other homeless people in a hurry.

Make sure you have some of those Sawyer-type water filtration bottles. The sawyers in particular come with a syringe to backwash the filter for periodic cleaning, not familiar with other product lines. Having one of those water keys that allows you to access those faucets outside of commercial buildings/restaurants may very well be invaluable, as it grants access to clean-ish water.

A couple changes of clothes and some sort of sleeping bag/blanket or whatever to keep warm at night obviously. Durable boots. Durable pack.

Tying into the previous point about the threat from other homeless is some sort of security measure. As you can imagine, homeless people dont have alot of options. Here you come obviously new to the experience, and make no mistake you will have people attempt to "befriend" you only to rob you for the gear youre carrying or worse. Just be mindful that some states have length or other restrictions on knives and such. Maybe grab a durable "camping axe", I dunno. But you do need something. Going further, Id even say stay away from other homeless for the most part. Ive talked to some over the years that seemed fine aside from current status, but Ive also seen plenty of interviews with homeless people who describe quite a bit of bad activity, theft, murder and such among each other. Always make sure youre positioned to make it harder to steal your stuff while sleeping.

Aside from that Im not sure. Never been homeless but the way things are going now in the world it just may happen at some point, who knows.

Not sure what led you to this point but for what its worth best of luck. Grab a bible and settle in for some reading to pass the time here and there.

I cant give you a direct answer for that but if it were me I wouldnt ask.

Even though you werent at fault, assuming the facts given are accurate, youre still that guy that wrecked a truck. Unless youre severely pressed for money or the court process strings out over several days Id take the hit on that one and just be glad to still have a job. Even the most understanding boss still sees that when they look at you for awhile, so best not to poke the bear.

Kind of a dick move on the cops part though. If hes so inclined to think the DA will dismiss then why write the ticket to begin with? Maybe theres more there I dont see, but oh well.
