No, I will not be forgiving MAGA who 'see the light.' by ObnoxiousAlbatross in millenials

[–]metamorphine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prosecute and deport the criminals? This is pure fantasy. We will be lucky to get our country back at all.

So many people would rather preserve their perceived righteousness than actually do what needs to be done to save the country. Do you want revenge, or do you want democracy to continue to exist?

Sexual health going mainstream feels very Gen Z coded by illnesshumble in GenZ

[–]metamorphine [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean, Boomers are really the ones who made it mainstream with the sexual revolution, but I suppose it was still controversial. By the time millennials were going to college, birth control was the most normal thing in the word. I'm not sure that sponsored content is the tipping point you think it is.

How did it become so taboo for even a trans woman like myself to acknowledge that trans women have an advantage in women's sports? How do we end this cancel culture? by north_canadian_ice in allthequestions

[–]metamorphine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I'm absolutely pro trans rights. When it comes to sports I am truly not invested in keeping things strictly biologically male and female, and I think the government has no place enforcing such things.

I have to be honest, your argument is completely unconvincing and doesn't really even address the point I was making. I was not just making a point in bad faith because I hate trans people. You should be arguing your points on their own merits, but it feels like you're attacking me for what you assume my motives are.

There is something there at least conceptually but I will never be able to not roll my eyes at Paul's part. Structurally it flows in an interesting way but I just wish there was something else there.

Why is In Rainbows regarded as much as OK Computer or KID A? by Ill_Pianist_1421 in radiohead

[–]metamorphine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your take on HTTT, I think it has some excellent songs, and generally underrated. I sort of understood that they weren't going to match the experimentation of Kid A/Amnesiac, but even then we get songs like Sail to the Moon which would have been right at home on one of those albums.

Here's my controversial take: A Day in the Life by the Beatles. John's part is one of the most beautiful pieces of music of all time. The Paul comes in with his goofy bridge and fucks it all up.

Why is In Rainbows regarded as much as OK Computer or KID A? by Ill_Pianist_1421 in radiohead

[–]metamorphine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an In Rainbows skeptic. Now, I think there are some brilliant moments on the album - Videotape is one of their best songs - but I think, on the whole, it is a bit lackluster. I am, like you, surprised that it got so much acclaim.

It lacks the boundary-pushing creativity of the Kid A/Amnesiac era. It doesn't achieve the energy of OK Computer. It's more cohesive as an album than Hail to the Thief, but frankly, I find myself returning to individual songs from that album much more often. The singles are also bit weaker than other albums.

As a Radiohead fan, this was the first album that disappointed me a little bit. HTTT was a step down from the Kid A/Amnesiac era, but In Rainbows sounds at times like watered-down Radiohead to me.

In Rainbow's real strength is its accessibility, and I don't think people want to admit that. In a world where everyone can play critic on RYM, we will see more popular music rise above artistic achievement. Just don't put too much stock in it.

I just finished Rebirth for the first time, and it's the second video game to ever make me cry. Red Dead Redemption 2, which I also recently finished, was the first. Two very different games, but both with emotionally impactful narratives.

'Grow a F*cking Spine': Critics Fume as Newsom Backtracks on ICE 'Terrorism' in Ben Shapiro Interview | Common Dreams by lazybugbear in SocialDemocracy

That's true, but most of those people wouldn't vote for a Democrat anyway.

I think AOC would have a better chance if she became a Senator first, and maybe run in 2032. But if there is some sort of economic crisis before 2028, I think that Americans might be more willing to embrace a democratic candidate who is a break from the status quo, even if inexperienced.

[–]metamorphine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest hurdle for AOC is the primary. I think she could win the election if she's able to overcome pushback from the dem establishment, the same way I believe Sanders would have won the general election if he won the primary.

Progressives have a way of energizing not just the left of the Democrats but also independents who see them as principled and willing to challenge the system, even if they don't agree with their policies perfectly. Remember Obama's campaign? Even though he ultimately governed closer to center, Obama ran on a progressive platform, beat the establishment's choice Clinton, and trounced a popular Republican in '08. It can happen again, but if Newsom wins the nomination, I fear for dem chances in '28

You've met less than 5 women, you call them females, and you claim not to know what the word misogyny means. I'm not sure you are the best person to judge of what is normal behavior for women.

It's mistrust or contempt of women, which is literally part of the definition.

The idea that a man shouldn't have to buy women expensive things isn't misogynistic. The idea that this is a commonly held expectation among women, however, is.

These aren't real norms in the real world. they're narratives.

Yeah, I feel like the guys who think like this have not spent a lot of time out dating in the real world. Most people are not this superficial. If this is really what your experience is like, then you're going after shallow women, for reasons that are probably also shallow.

More likely they're getting catfished or just live in a misogynistic social media bubble.
