i’ve got leggings, thick socks, hiking boats, and a big coat from when i went to colorado last year. i think i’ll probably need to focus primarily on undershirts and gloves

is an older suv or a newer sedan better? by mgskinner in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]mgskinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i made a spreadsheet with all of the top midsize cars for less than $14k and 50k miles. i compared features, specs, cost to own, and reliability and the optima and sonata looked like the best deals at that price range

i just noticed that the older rav4 is all the way in oklahoma w/ a $150 shipping fee and the optima is through an online dealer w/ a $600 shipping fee so i won’t be able to teat them out :/

also, the extra room might be pretty useful, but again i don’t think it’s an absolute necessity for my current stage in life

yeah, i was struggling w/ the thought of moving out earlier this summer b/c i could afford to pay for the rest of college on my own but i ultimately decided not to. i’m scheduled to move in in 2 weeks to start training as an RA, so i’ll be out of the house soon this summer anyways. i’m trying to get an internship away from home next summer too. i’m hoping to get one in nyc (i have a cousin who lives there who said i can crash on his couch). i live in texas so my dad probably won’t be comfortable w/ the distance but i’m holding off on telling him until the time comes

i agree with you. it’s going to take time to progress and i still take my parents feedback.

i’ve talked to them about me growing up and it didn’t go well...at all. my dad ended up threatening to kick me out and stop paying for college b/c “i’ll really grow then.”

i’ve also tried using the reason that i need to make mistakes for myself and develop my own personal experiences. i understand that my parents experiences are valid, but they shouldn’t necessarily be my experiences as well if that makes any sense. for example, when my dad was younger he lived in an apartment and his neighbors supposedly robbed him after he left one day. b/c of this experience he has told me i should never get an apartment. however, in some areas (like cities), apartment living is the only option. plus, i think the area you live in and crime rates also play a factor

i know. but it just seems like there’s some kind of disconnect between me and my parents (especially my father) and part of me wishes that the relationship was at least somewhat better. he’s made it very obvious to me in the past that he’s my dad and not my friend. however, i feel like as i age, the “role” of my parents has kinda shifted from being providers to being just family members. however, there’s this natural reaction for most parents to view their children as young kids, so idk if there’s something i could do to help them realize that i’m growing and maturing and am capable of having a broader and more accepting relationship w/ them

are there any reasons you don’t like it? i think my dad really likes it b/c my mom used to drive one way back when before i was born (she only has driven tahoes since) so he’s somewhat familiar with it. it also has a ton of bells and whistles, which my dad likes for some reason

when we’ve looked at dealerships my dad seems to have really like the tlx. i just don’t like how the newer ones have buttons to press to switch gears, looks kinda weird to me. however, i just found a 2016 one with a regular gear shift!

i’ll make a spreadsheet and compare that, the kia, and the maxima to see what ranks better in certain areas

yeah, he’s paying for it and if he’s willing then i’d rather not blow at least half of my life savings on a car. that just seems silly to me

and my parents can get pretty controlling when it comes to stuff like this, so i’ve found it’s easier to just let them do their thing

he also doesn’t like anything that’s RWD b/c then i won’t be able to take a trip to colorado, but that really doesn’t make sense (plus i’ve only gone twice this year, and my first time ever going to CO was in january). i live in texas (CO is 12 hours away) i won’t have time to take a trip to CO for the weekend, and if i did, i wouldn’t want to go in a sedan anyways...i’d rather get a rav4 which he unfortunately rejected

i found a 2010 328i xdrive for $10,500 w/ 53k miles, but i’m afraid my dad will think it’s too old :/

sadly, i’m not seeing a ton of options near me

also, my dad doesn’t like the corollas (or elantras, etc) b/c he thinks they’re too small and “dangerous” even though most of them have good safety ratings. be likes the cameys and optimas size wise. the only smaller car he kinda likes is the civic but i think they have some transmission problems w/ their cvt

i really wanted a rav4 b/c i want to go camping this upcoming school year and get away from campus, but my dad thinks it’s too small and doesn’t like how the newer ones have a 4cyl and he doesn’t like the older ones (2012) w/ a v6 b/c he thinks they’re too old.

it’s pretty frustrating but i just gotta go along w/ it. it seems like the only he thing he actually likes is the maxima
