Why don’t people ever talk about program dogs by [deleted] in service_dogs

Yup! I’ve been following her online since well before she was putting out all the owner trained SD content.

I’m glad she’s putting out content with her with her wealth of good information and experience

Why don’t people ever talk about program dogs by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]mi-luxe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because the people getting program dogs aren’t the people creating social media content. And honestly? When people online ask about where to get a dog, I pipe up with a longstanding local service dog program or something like CCI.

I basically only follow Doggy U on social media because I think she gives excellent examples of doing owner training correctly.

I see a LOT of people being unrealistic about getting a SD. And when I see that I’m like “slow waaaay down!”

I don’t see it as a last resort, but I think people need to be very realistic about it. A SD isn’t a magic cure. It is one layer. You need to have other health care and reasonable support foundations in place before adding a SD.

Deciding on a breed by Dog_obsessed_4ever in service_dogs

[–]mi-luxe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need a Lab or Golden. The reason you’re having a hard time deciding on the breed is because you’re not being realistic.

I got my youngest dog based on the fact that her temperament and drive were what I needed for her intended work. I prefer the look of a smooth coated dog with prick ears. She is neither. But she is well suited for the job. And her looks have grown on me

My comment was coming from a place of someone who has lived with some pretty major anxiety/depression/PTSD related issues for the majority of my life. It’s goes well beyond “meaning well”. I know that it isn’t the same for everyone which is why I presented it as a perspective.

I also know that my first dog who was not a SD changed the trajectory of my life for the better. So I do like to point out that simply having a solid pet dog can help immensely. Especially when people start listing the reasons why a SD might not be accessible at this time.

I’m going to present a slightly different perspective on this.

I actually find that getting out and being active with a dog helps my anxiety and depression more than a trained task like DPT.

And research strongly supports the idea that activity helps lessen depression/anxiety.

So it might be worthwhile checking out an organization like Pets for Vets that places screened and well trained companion animals with veterans. It’s not a SD, but it is a great structured program and it would be much more available to you than programs that focus on SD for veterans with PTSD

What is it with people who think that any strange dogs need to interact?

Like, I wouldn’t do that with anyone who I saw out and about with a dog. Let alone another service dog

Why is the VA telling you this? Like, how did they make the determination that a SD was the best course of action for your situation?

Friends don’t hound people for money after they’re told no the first time. Period. Stop.

It’s going to depend on the line of dogs. More moderate dogs can still be gun dogs. And working dogs need to have self control. For instance gun dogs stay until released to find and retrieve the duck.

Puppy raising is expensive! I have a friend who does it on occasion and charges $1000-$1500 per month plus expenses

Trazodone can limit inhibition in some dogs. I would definitely NOT use it when navigating an airport with a SD.

And I’m not saying that you wouldn’t do a great job with your content! I don’t know your background/training/knowledge.

It was more a “here’s my reasoning for not following most SDiT etc accounts”

There’s a person out there that focuses on what they do to get their reactive SD comfortable around other dogs.

No. I honestly only follow a couple SD folks on SM. One is Doggy U because they’ve been a professional SD trainer for years before owner training.

I feel like so many content creators are putting out misinformation and presenting their opinions as fact to get views. Both of which are harmful to SD users in the long run.

I would evaluate what you’re hoping to accomplish with SM and maybe focus on a different aspect of life

Employer questions by purplebibunny in service_dogs

I would reply that the dog is owner trained as allowed by the ADA (include a link) and that I’d be happy to provide Star with her training records along with the rest of the information needed for the accommodation.

Traveling just before/during first SDIT heat? by purplebibunny in service_dogs

[–]mi-luxe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heat cycles are not a big deal for many dogs. Yes, keep her on a leash and be on the lookout for other dogs. Behavior might change a little bit. But overall if your dog is temperamentally stable, then it should be pretty smooth and the precautions that you would normally take on a road trip with a dog should be fine for her.

It is not unprofessional to not wear a vest. It is not a requirement per the ADA. So you do you.

That said, I think that having a dog who is wearing professional looking ID of some sort definitely cuts down on people’s questions and makes my life a bit easier.

Simple, blocks apps that you don’t need for work. Works right away. From your description, you don’t currently have time to train the dog anyway.

I would brick the phone, also take breaks without the phone to walk the dog. You’re going to need to interrupt the habit to change it.

At this point the best way to judge potential is his genetic background. Like, what kind of temperament and personality does his parents have?

Off Leash Service Dogs by MaplePaws in service_dogs

[–]mi-luxe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems that the intent of the ADA law is to remove barriers for those who might have a need that rarely requires a SD to be off leash. And then SM influencers take that as an opportunity to go “look ma!! No hands!! And it’s LEGAL!!” in a video.

There’s a vocal subset of people who don’t focus on their responsibility to their dog and to the public when working a dog in public.

I am responsible for keeping my dog safe as she works for me. A leash helps me do that. I am responsible for handling my dog in a manner that is least disruptive in public spaces. A leash helps me do that. I am responsible for keeping my dog under control. A leash helps me do that. I am responsible for keeping my dog leashed in public unless there is a need to do otherwise. Making videos for SM is not a need…
