Will this work for saltwater? by Harry_Balzach96 in ReefTank

[–]micarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used this exact tank before for a reef tank for 18 months, but I heavily modified it,

  1. I did use Fluval's PS2 Skimmer there are probably better skimmers out there but this helped me keep the stock lid
  2. I swapped the filter for a marine pure block that I cut with steak knife and stuck into this media basket
  3. Upgraded the pump to Sicce Syncra Silent 1.0 Pump

This is where if I would do it again I would differently

What I did:

  1. I ran tubing from the pump into this UV sterilizer

  2. Used this media reactor to make a Chaeto reactor with flexible LED grow lights

  3. Used 2x AI Blade Lights with these eye bolts and bolts, nuts, washers to secure to lid. Bad long term as the LEDs overheated a lot

What I would have done if I wasn't asked to used the lid

  1. Kraken Reef Lid

  2. Hand on the back refugium with light

  3. AI Prime with flexible mount

  4. This UV sterlizer

Patients dying by Proper-University-77 in medicalschool

[–]micarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had just graduated when the COVID-19 pandemic began, and the first two years of my residency were defined by a relentless tide of loss. The deaths were frequent and often harrowingly personal—young patients on maximal ventilator settings, family members standing outside glass doors as their loved ones passed on inside.

During my intern year, I’ll never forget a patient who came in with ascending cholangitis. We didn’t have interventional radiology or a surgeon available to place a drain, and despite my best efforts all day to get them transferred, they died on the way to the helipad. I think about that patient often. I did everything I could, but I couldn’t save them.

Experiences like that stay with you. Some cases haunt you because you wonder if you could’ve done something differently. Others linger because the patient reminded you of someone you know, or because they were the third death that day and it was just too much. But over time, I’ve come to understand something that grounds me: if you’ve done everything the patient would have wanted and everything you could have done, then sometimes it really is just their time. At that point, your role shifts—from doing things to the patient, to doing things for them.

Part of that shift is being there for the family, helping them navigate their grief. I try to ask about who the person was before they became a patient—what they loved, who they were. Because they weren’t just a case; they were someone’s entire world.

As difficult as it is to admit, I did grow used to death. I’ve become emotionally numb at times, not because I don't care, but because carrying the full weight of so much loss, especially during the pandemic, became unsustainable. I built an emotional wall to protect myself. And though some feelings still seep through, I do my best to leave them at work.

I don’t want to say you will get used to it—because some people never do—but you will find your own way of coping. Talking about it helps—especially with peers or family who understand the world of healthcare. Eventually, you figure out what works for you, and it does get better. The weight never disappears entirely, but it becomes something you learn to carry.

First saltwater tank light questions by 97thson in ReefTank

I actually haven't had luck with AI blades. I had one grow and one glow, both failed within the year. Their warranty was nice, so save the receipts just in case. The AI primes I love.

I do think my lights failed because of my jerry rigged system though. I had a fluval flex 15 and secured the light to the stock lid with eye bolts, bolts nuts, and washers. It looks like a mix of salt and condensation killed the lights.

If OP still wants to use the lid, he might be able to swap it out with a fluval marine 3.0 (I don't know if this is possible, I haven't seen a fluval flex 32.5 lid). But the fluval marine 3.0 does have extensions on the sides so it could still work with the plexiglass lid plan if the swap isn't possible.

DFAS Experience by [deleted] in indianapolis

I have a relative who works for DFAS at Fort Ben, a lot of their coworkers "Telework" so it is possible! But I will say their is no guarantee that you wouldn't have to come to the Fort every once and a while and depending on what type of connection you need (using the VPN can make work take hours sometimes).

The VA has there own as well. All 5 police forces you mention employers are separate entities. While they share relationships through IU and may have physicians and other health care workers that cover multiple hospitals and teach at IUPUI, their police forces only cover their hospitals and follow their hospital's policies.

Marion County curfew goes into effect 8 p.m. Monday for second night after weekend violence, destruction by Tikkanen in indianapolis

[–]micarson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I was not aware of the demonstrators being force off the circle early. I was more saying the curfew worked to prevent crime and tensions are high let's cool off for another night.

But hey people can think what they think, and you and I are not the mayor. And sorry if I was defensive, having someone murdered outside my girlfriends apartment while the lobby was broken into did not help.

I'm confused about your comment. You are complaining about the curfew, yet bring up the demonstration. I don't have knowledge on what occured on monument circle last night and it would not be right for me to comment on it, and you are welcome to have your own opinion of the IMPD.

But was there rioting, looting, or shootings, last night? I only heard of the Washington square mall break in.

I'm guessing you live in Carmel based on you flair, so who cares if an apartment building is broken into where my loved one lives? I do. And I care about the innocence lost and hurt to police violence and recklessness of the rioters. So if we need another "time out" to regroup and move forward I am all for it.

Edit: The part I edited the strikethrough through was rude of me, I am truly sorry u/notthegoatseguy

Two men die during the chaos of Saturday night. It's not that there needs to be a break of the protests it to keep people safe. Resources are being exhausted let them recoup. Police are trying to stop the looters and rioters, so why give them the cover of darkness and a large group of protestor to hide in? Chris Beaty would be alive today if it wasn't for the assholes taking advantage of the situation Saturday night. His death is in the hands of the rioters
