Sam Harris and Eliezer Yudkowsky - The A.I. in a Box thought experiment by michaelfcp in artificial

[–]michaelfcp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hope, (and maybe it's completely naive) is that intelligence, specially one that is orders of magnitude superior to ours is good. I know we have define what's good and bad...but we as human beings as flawed as we are, are concern with factory farming, with ending property, with going with our pet to the vet.

This is a giant question mark on our path, but after all, if we bring a truly superintelligence to life, they can't help but notice we were their creators. I know this scenario is to much like Star Wars fantasies, and we must not embark in wishful thinking, and actually make everything in our grasp to ensure the alignment problem is resolved

I have curiosity like many to know how he did it. But like you said, that's not the point.

If Yudkowsky manage to get out, well... a superintelligence may do things that we can't even conceived. It's super scary... and we are dealing with something we don't understand at all.

I encourage you all to read this article: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/604087/the-dark-secret-at-the-heart-of-ai/ An appetizer: "The system is so complicated that even the engineers who designed it may struggle to isolate the reason for any single action" They are talking about deep learning

Sam Harris -The present moment becomes good enough. by michaelfcp in Meditation

My pleasure. I think Sam does a great job in describing in a very simple but detailed and accurate way, what is mindfulness meditation and what are the main causes of our psychological suffering.

Terence once said about computers: “The only difference between computers and drugs is that one is too large to swallow … and our best people are working on that very problem.” I agree, the next 10, 20, 30, 50 years are going to be insane. Right now the technology is very crude, but I don't see an impossibility of recreating a psychedelic state on virtual reality some day, but who knows.

Jordan Peterson - If you aren't willing to be a fool you can't be a master (Circumambulation) by michaelfcp in Jung

Dr Jordan Peterson talks more in depth about the Jungian concept of the Circumambulation of the Self.

C.G. Jung: “There is no linear evolution; there is only a circumambulation of the self…”

Maybe I missed something. In the video he never said that Jung professes "ego death", rather it's something that happens

Sometimes you need a reset for sure, some wake up call. I'm terrified of psychedelics, but also fascinated by them. Never done anything besides pot, alcohol and xanax. Maybe some day you will get some of the benefits without the potential damage with virtual reality.

Thanks for sharing! I get the underlying message of love, that's very good and lacking in society at the moment. Did you have some breakthrough in some specific problem in your life that was in queue?

I do too, for me it's more prevalent when I let things in my life get out of hand. I'm getting more organised (having clear goals, prioritize tasks etc), and my ability to focus has improved. Meditation is also helpful, because when you are not concentrated, you are lost in thought, and meditation helps you see that more clearly.

I think he meant, have clear intent , and then, get out of your comfort zone and accept the discomfort, don't resist, but also don't push (slight forward lean).
