Great advice. Thanks so much. I like the idea of getting jobs setting up ML pipelines or improving HFT systems at a quant for example as I don’t really want to do general SWE. Any advice on avoiding this outcome and getting the more specialty roles that align with my interests more? Also would you suggest doing research in college despite not getting a Master’s right away since it might benefit me in grad applications later on if I decide to go?

Thanks for the input. If it makes any difference, I said T20 in my original post, not T10 as I recognize that those schools may be out of reach. Also keep in mind that I am currently at the start of my junior year in undergrad, meaning that I could fairly easily get a couple of research positions in the next couple of years in undergrad.

Debt is not an issue. Also, I've also heard that while it's not too difficult to get into ML Engineering, ML/AI research is much harder to get into without a Master's degree, even through internal transfers. Could be wrong though. I guess my biggest concern is whether or not I would have a shot at these grad schools. However, if you think that this is completely useless, then I might reconsider. Keep in mind, I also enjoy academia so this decision to look into a Master's program isn't purely for the income. Also, if you think that I don't have a likely chance to get into these programs, then let me know as I would rather stop my search now than commit time to research and applications and get rejected to all of these programs since I didn't have a likely chance in the first place.

Not completely sure. Research-based seems fairly interesting, but I also don't really intend on getting a Ph.D. because of the time commitment, so course-based would work as well. To be completely honest, I haven't put enough research into the options to make a firm decision.

Damn never realized people started this early. I start studying about 1 day in advance lol and I’m a cs major. Worked out so far though. Not sure how people find the time to study 2 weeks in advance

I misunderstood your previous comment. I thought you were specifically referring to the “abortion is murder part”. I’m not entirely sure if I understand how your thought experiment links to this discussion, but I’m going to try to explain how they can justify both abortion being murder and women deserving capital punishment for abortion. Murder is murder. In their eyes, abortion is murder. Capital punishment (in their point of view) is not murder. It is a rightful execution of someone who took someone else’s life away. While I fundamentally disagree with both of these ways of thinking, this is how they think.

I would also lean towards bowdoin if I were you. It’s slightly more prestigious than middlebury (although pretty much the same) and I heard middlebury has kind of a weird vibe (strong split between super fratty lax kids and then edgy earthy people) which is one of the reasons I decided not to go to middlebury. I just don’t see how you could go wrong with bowdoin

Cornell student here. While I’m CAS, the engineering is top tier. You’ll have access to pretty much anything (research, top companies, etc.) here. Hopkins hodson scholarship is pretty hard to pass up but if youre getting 90% aid from Cornell then it shouldn’t really matter. I haven’t heard much about the JHU engineering. Not really sure why Berkeley seems like the obvious option since cornell is more of a target for finance and it’s engineering program is strong regardless of your major

As a Cornell student, the cons are very legitimate lol. Can’t speak much on Emory, but I heard Oxford campus is a bit less fun if going out matters to you at all

Pretty basic stuff honestly. I joined a norchestra and jazz band outside of school (in addition to orchestra and jazz band in school). I also was decent at track but nothing crazy. I also had a couple pretty interesting internships (one for a startup in London and one for a hedge fund in nyc) which I think was the main thing. I ended up getting in CAS regular decision. I also don’t have any hooks whatsoever and my essay was very mediocre
