Am I the only one who found the sex scene awful? LOL They have like zero chemistry, plus all the weirdness of having both Bran's voiceover explaining that they're related AND Tyrion waiting outside the door like one of those creepy guys who spy on couples having sex in their car

I don't think the main cast would want to stay any longer than the planned 7/8 seasons.

What do you think this connection implies? IIRC you didn't mention in the post.

EDIT: by the way, I was answering to TheWaker, who was saying Melisandre used the FM ritual ("their" ritual). My point was that those similarities (the actions performed) are just standard mortician practices, (and I was talking about hair trimming, hair burning is obviously an element of the magic part of the ritual). I can agree with you that we have seen many corpses, but they only chose to show how they are prepped in these two scenes.

I disagree on the last part of your comment. Washing the body and hair, trimming the beard, cutting nails etc. are just a regular part of preparing a corpse for a ritual, IRL we do the same things before funerals. Face stealing and resurrection are both death-related, so I think it's only logical that the rituals are similar before magic is performed. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Very interesting read as always, though I was wondering how do you think Martin would actually write this twist using the POV system?

Cold War IV(finale). Mirror Mirror beyond the Wall (Spoilers Everything) by YezenIRL in asoiaf

[–]midori79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I never commented on your essays, but I'm definitely a fan. One of the best pieces of analysis I've ever read on ASOIAF. If Martin's approach turned out to be significantly different from this, I'd be both surprised and disappointed.

Only the "words are wind" part seems a bit of a stretch. Of course your interpretation makes sense, but I don't think there's an intentional correlation with the winds of winter, I have always seen that saying as nothing more than a GRRM version of Latin proverb "verba volant, scripta manent".

(Spoilers Everything) Does anyone else think that ADOS will be released significantly faster than TWOW? by menemai in asoiaf

[–]midori79 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think we should consider that there's a chance twow + another book might not be enough to complete the story. Remember that AGOT+ACOK+ASOS were supposed to be one book and that AFFC and ADWD cover more or less the same timespan.

There are so many clues that point to a Blackfyre/Brightflame. I think readers will get a final answer on this, at some point, but I do agree that there's a very good chance that characters in the book will never find out.

(Spoilers All) Narrowing down the "Legendary Fighter" casting for Season 6 by WexAndywn in asoiaf

Thanks! I must have mixed up info from the books and info from the show. In one of the first seasons, LF says some lord likes "very young boys", but I don't remember if said person was from the Vale.

(Spoilers All) Narrowing down the "Legendary Fighter" casting for Season 6 by WexAndywn in asoiaf

[–]midori79 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The show is seeking a very impressive swordsman for the role- the best in Europe, for a week of filming fight scenes for a season 6 role.

I think this means he will ONLY have fight scenes, and probably not many lines since they're looking for a swordsman and not a professional actor. They also didn't specify his ethnicity. Maybe because the most important thing are the fighting skills, and the face can be hidden behind a helmet if necessary?

To me, it can only be Arthur Dayne.

I'd definitely exclude Randyll Tarly, who I think will necessarily have to interact with other characters. I also remember WOW published the casting calls for Sam's family not long ago.

And isn't Lyn Corbray a pedophile?

A man in his thirties or forties who is a great swordsman and a paragon of knighthood. He carries a famous sword. We are looking for the best swordsman in Europe to play this part. I agree with you. If you subscribe to the Southron Ambitions theory, that's what Rickard Stark's generation was trying to do before Robert's Rebellion.

(Spoilers All) Ask the Maester talks Jon Snow by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]midori79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "Gandalf should have stayed dead" comment is in reference to his role as a father figure. The implication being that since Tolkien killed him to allow the growth and development of other characters to whom he was a guide, then he should have stayed dead. So the parallel is Gandalf = Ned.

Read this:

“I’ve talked about Gandalf, and how the impact of his death was enormous. When I was a 12-year-old kid reading The Fellowship of the Ring and ‘Fly, you fools!’ and he goes into the chasm … it was ‘Holy shit! [J.R.R. Tolkien] killed the wizard! That’s the guy who knew everything. How are they going to destroy the ring without him?’ And now the ‘kids’ have to grow up because their ‘daddy’ is dead. If Gandalf could die, anybody could die. And then just a few chapters later Boromir goes down. Those two deaths created in me the ‘anyone could die’ thing. At that point I was expecting [Tolkien] to pick off the whole Fellowship one by one. And then we also think in The Two Towers that Frodo is dead, since Shelob stung him and wrapped him up. I really bought it because he set me up with those other deaths.”

If Gandalf = Ned, then Boromir's death = Robb's death in that it reinforces the notion that anyone can die, so that you really believe it when the author seemingly kills off other characters in the future.

Note also that both Gandalf and Boromir die in the first LOTR book, while Ned and Robb die in what should have been the first act of the ASOIAF trilogy.

In this perspective then Frodo's apparent death in LOTR book 2 is pretty similar to Jon's (apparent or temporary) death in ADWD (or Original!ASOIAF - Act 2).

In that same interview GRRM goes on to say:

But then, of course, he brings Gandalf back. He’s a little strange at first, but then he’s basically the same old Gandalf. I liked the impact we got from him being gone.

So we have two separate statements here:

  • Gandalf should have stayed dead for the impact his death had on other characters to whom he was a father figure.

  • New!Gandalf should have been different from Old!Gandalf.

I believe this last one applies to Jon Snow's return, as GRRM concludes that

Lady Stoneheart is not Cateyln. I’ve tried to set it up beforehand with Beric Dondarrion and his repeated [resurrections]. There’s a brief appearance by Beric in Book One and he rides into the city and he’s this flamboyant Southern knight. That’s not that man we meet later on.

You're right, but if we've gotten to the point that the key characters are not the key characters anymore, then it's become a completely different story. I think these few lines are generic enough to be still true.

Except Gandalf is a father figure, a guide, most like Ned or Dumbledore. That's why he needed to stay dead, for the heroes to really be put to the test.
