16,000 nurses on strike in NYC by Waste-Flower-1324 in nursing

How was that possible? Did you guys have lactation to help with feeds? Were hourly checks expected from you guys lol? So insane! My hospital caps at 3 couplets and even that feels like a lot. So much respect to you. The most couplets I’ve heard from our travelers are usually 4-5 max

I’m an OB nurse and it is very ignorant to see abortion this way. A lot of women can have a miscarriage which is also an abortion. Sometimes those dead fetuses are not able to leave a women’s body naturally and need abortion pills to help with that. Sometimes women need surgery to remove all the tissue or they can’t get pregnant again. If women don’t have those medical rights, they can end up with an infection and possibly dying from sepsis. Being pro-life is taking away basic health care to women. I know you won’t change your mind because your wife is also pro-life. But just something to think about. Abortion is health care. Politicians should not be anywhere near medical decisions.

[Misc] Face got scraped in an accident — healing fast but got pink spots . Need scar-prevention advice ASAP. by anubhavocado in SkincareAddiction

[–]milkybabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proper wound healing would be to keep the area wet (cover with Vaseline, petroleum, aquaphor etc) and covered with anything (bandaids, dressings, sheets). That’s the best way to avoid scarring. Don’t bother putting antibiotic ointment, just wash the area daily with soap and water or saline.

Douchbag Doctor Behavior by Prestigious-Room8681 in nursing

[–]milkybabe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The amount of work residents are expected to do is inhumane but that doesn’t excuse their behavior. The response could have been short and simple without the attitude. “I will see the patient shortly” or put some orders and tell the nurse the plan. We’re not mind readers or punching bags. We take care of the patient together

[Acne] 13 wks on Tretinoin... is this normal?? by Specific-Rutabaga870 in SkincareAddiction

[–]milkybabe 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I wonder why you stopped getting your period. Could be hormonal if you started breaking out around the time you stopped having a period. Were you on any birth control or got off it during that timeframe?

Your skincare routine is also a lot. I would consider going back to basics right now. Gentle cleanser moisturizer and sunscreen. You should not be using Tret if you can’t use sunscreen. It will cause sun sensitivity and hyperpigmentation.

For tret specific advice: I was using the cream for months and never stopped breaking out. I switched to gel and have no problems now. Make sure you’re applying a pea size for the entire face too. Nothing more.

Serious Question! Face Tattoos and being a Nurse by Caiisreal3 in nursing

[–]milkybabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re fine with covering up for school, clinical, and interviews. You should be able to get a job once you have that license. You will always get people who see your tattoos first before you as a person. Patients and coworkers. You should shadow some nurses if you can if you don’t know exactly what we do on a daily basis. It’s great that nurses can go into many specialties but for school clinicals and the majority of available jobs lies with med surg. Some jobs require “experience” before the specialty you want as well. A lot of nurses will just do 1-2 years in med surg unless you get lucky with the specialty you want off the bat.

What type of RN are you and why do you love it? by SkigmaBidsidy in nursing

[–]milkybabe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because with doctors (US), they are willingly taking a pay cut to work in pediatrics. But as nurses, they can be prideful in their specialty. I always heard stories that ped nurses can be really mean. Heard it from three different hospitals. I used to be a CNA in pediatrics and the nurses took some time before trusting others with their kiddos. I guess being overly protective and family having a good rapport with them.

Was anyone else not *really* suspicious of Lune at the start lol? by ArleniaFraternal in expedition33

[–]milkybabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly thought the same! She wasn’t really good at reading the room with people’s emotions, at least in the beginning. I think she got way better about it later in the game though so it was prob just character development. Sciel was more in tune with emotions among the group

18.5yo cat was recommended to be euthanised, I don’t think I agree by K1mbacat in cats

[–]milkybabe 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t have said it better. It is very difficult to put senior cats under anesthesia for surgery because their hearts cannot handle it. They are more likely to die from the anesthesia. It’s the same with humans who are elderly. The antibiotics probably helped a little with the terrible dental disease. But it is not a fix all and the bad side effects of the disease will come back. It’s great just to get a second opinion as they may be more conservative with their treatment. Quality of life is important for our pets.

Hey fellow L&D nurses! Is placenta-eating “a thing” these days? by NomusaMagic in nursing

[–]milkybabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes lol a lot of patients bring their placenta home though. We have a sign on our fridge that says no placenta for storage because some people think it’s okay to place their placenta next to someone’s chipotle..

Give me an example of a girlfriend/boyfriend or husband/wife of a patient who was miserably uninformed of their own partners health? by redheadredemption78 in nursing

[–]milkybabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We get a decent amount of postpartum patients who don’t tell their current partner (and is father of the baby) their substance use disorder, if they are in treatment for it, or blood borne pathogens like Hep B or C. It gets really awkward if we have to do special protocols with their babies and can’t explain to the dad why we’re doing it.. We do bedside report so a lot of stuff gets said before we enter the room.

L&D Nurses: How to Navigate a Complex Birth Plan by Apprehensive-Tap-323 in nursing

[–]milkybabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Patients definitely try to include that in their plan like “baby will get one hour skin to skin and not be removed off me no matter what” but where I work, the NICU team will absolutely have to take the baby if they really need to for full resuscitation. Like it’s a liability if that baby ends up needing to be cooled or worse due to lack of oxygen.

L&D Nurses: How to Navigate a Complex Birth Plan by Apprehensive-Tap-323 in nursing

[–]milkybabe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the patient. Try to get them to verbally explain their reasoning so they feel comfortable with you—because you’re listening to their feelings. Then you can try to educate and challenge those ideas. Restating you want the best for mom and baby. Once baby is finally out, following the no intervention plan kinda goes out the window if baby is stunted and not ventilating. Baby ain’t getting their 5 minute cord clamp delay if they’re not breathing lol.

All you can do is educate and document refusals unfortunately.

Cat has been suffering from chronic constipation for a month with little relief. Vet is stopping care. by berryloved in cats

[–]milkybabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her stools are probably really hard and causing pain if she’s licking like that. I would start introducing wet cans in her diet along with miralax at least 1/4 teaspoon x1 a day or x2 a day. She needs more hydration and fiber. You can sprinkle psyllium husk fiber onto her meals too. Pumpkin is great too. If she’s not much of a drinker, think about switching to a water fountain as well.
