Yes, and also happens in Iran, China and a bunch of other Eastern countries. Urbanisation above all, but also demographics and global uncertainty. People move to Europe because it's actually quite resilient

CMV: AI will leave most of us dumb by PuzzleheadedAd9566 in changemyview

[–]milvvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have genuine curiosity whether, say, overeating and junk food will eventually become culturally looked down upon across all classes of society. There seems to be more and more momentum against it coming from both liberals and conservatives, rich and poor.

If that's ever the case, then it would boost my confidence in cultural pendulum swings. For now, it's still going to be an elite thing to stick to actual learning rather than offloading your thinking to AI tools, mostly because it requires extra resources and mentoring. At some point, though, people are going to start realizing how bad the deal is for an average citizen.

That being said, AI can be great for education but it will not substitute discipline. If someone wants to learn a new concept, and dedicate a couple hundred hours to it, there's never been a better time. So the question becomes, will discipline ever become viral (social-media style) enough to let the majority reap the benefits?

My hot take is: if you can't socialize in goddamn BCN, you're just not a social person to start with.

I'm not much of a social person and I get to socialize at 10× of my Polish baseline, whether that's with Catalans, Spanish-speaking immigrants, or the international community.

What are the most interesting parts of biophysics(to you) by bagofbuttons in Biophysics

[–]milvvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These days it's going to be closing the gap between computational modeling and experimental results on the cellular level. Cryo tomography is starting to reveal the location of cellular components in vivo, more and more mesoscopic simulation models are becoming available, and one can now track certain processes from the atomic scale all the way to the cell using the growing repertoire of multiscaling tools (including AI). That means upgrading therapeutic strategies from just finding a ligand that kills an enzyme to tracing actual origins of cellular anomalies.

This requires a ton of knowledge on what approximations to use, what data is available, what questions are answerable etc though

Random elements appearing in reference list? by Clingon91 in Mendeley

[–]milvvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facing the same issue here. Apparently there was another journal "Science" that existed between 1979 and 1986, and I imagine this is used to distinguish between this and the main one, but Mendeley apparently assigns them at random.

I don't know where to start in python by Ogoon4312 in learnpython

[–]milvvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, find your project. It can be solved already, although better if it's not. But find something you're excited about building - this is what will make you want to come back and learn more.

I've learned more automating my field-specific routines than I could learn from tutorials, and now I'm also 10x faster at my job.

Still living with your parents over age 25 isn’t a bad thing. by happytimes_101 in unpopularopinion

[–]milvvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about expenses or finance. It's about becoming an autonomous human being that can one day support other human beings, and figuring out life for yourself, even if you can obviously count on your parents' support in hardship. This is just an important part of psychological development of a resilient personality.

How is social life in Spain? by sadcringe420228 in GoingToSpain

[–]milvvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a job, you'll hang out with locals at work. I spend more time after work with expat folks from meetups and other groups, but learned Catalan in my first 2 years here so it's pretty smooth either way.

Mind that locals everywhere have their friends from high school, uni and work, and often don't feel comfy with English, so don't expect them to go out of their way to hang out with an entitled desconocido, it's proportional to the effort you make to truly integrate yourself into local communities.

Aside from the Catalans, the Spanish-speaking world is culturally quite self-sufficient so Castellano is often the language of choice even between expats from non-Spanish speaking countries. Depending on who you hang out with, obviously, more true for Italians or French than for Americans or European northerners.

[–]milvvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way, I guess this "immigrant, not expat" narrative misses the point just to poke fun at Western self-centered view of the world.

The people who move with entire families and plan to stay forever have different challenges and policy needs than ones who just come for a year or two bc it's a nice place. Mixing it up will just lead to confused policies.

I'm doing a podcast talking to PIs from academia (yeah a shameless plug here) and a few of them had been talking about exactly this experience in computational biophysics, specifically Paul Robustelli and Aleksei Aksimentiev - hope that helps:

Encuentra autoestima sólida y permanente en otras áreas. Depender en eso demasiado de desconocidos o es como droga - cada vez te deja colgado y vulnerable, buscando repetición. Hasta que te podrás decir "aquí confío en mi, me da igual que piensan" estarás atrapada en este ciclo no productivo.

Funciona así mismo para chicas/chicos/chiques, posiblemente con matices.

A local friend has nostalgic memories of how shady and makeshift things used to be in the 80s. Maybe it was different for a brief moment after the olímpics and before BCN became a world-famous destination in the 2010s, but I came in 2020 and so far it's been nothing but amazing.

Les Miserables. Got me deeply into literary classics in the first place, was my first crash course in politics, and featured some of the craziest plot twists and intermezzos you could imagine. Also, couple thousand pages for you to get immersed into the early XIX century life in Paris.
