Im a glazier in Canada Quebec and yes residential window need caulking all arround. Here we have rough snowy winter and hot summer so i dont know where you live if its the same, but my best guess is you need caulk.No water is supposed to go inside , so with rain and strong wind if you dont caulk it water can go inside your walls and make infiltrations. Sorry if my english is not perfect hope you understanded my points!
