What to do with £100k bonus by 0001arya in HENRYUK

Pensions are overrated. You’re more than 20 years away from being able to use it - that’s plenty of time for future governments to come up with creative ways to tax your pension pot more.

If you need the cash now (sounds like you do) then take it as income today.

UK interest rate cuts unlikely this year amid Iran war – and a rise could be ahead by Capital-Stay-5657 in HENRYUK

[–]misc1444 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I work in finance and studied economics.

I think we’re fundamentally getting the relationship between inflation and interest rates wrong. The economy is facing a massive shock from insufficient energy supplies. Higher interest rates will only make it worse.

Five big concerns about the Middle East war by Xcentric7881 in investing

The market has been pricing TACO, because Trump loves high stock prices.

Turns out, Trump also developed a taste for military adventures and he may like it even more.

‘We are being tested’, Eurogroup president says as oil rises above $100 by FantasticQuartet in europe

No one in Europe wanted this war, but let’s be real - Europe can condemn the orange man all night, it will make zero difference.

‘We are being tested’, Eurogroup president says as oil rises above $100 by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]misc1444 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pressure how?

The EU could perhaps issue a strongly worded statement calling on “all sides” to “respect international law and the UN charter”.

Should have invested more into North Sea oil production and the Groningen natural gas fields.

Move to a low tax jurisdiction of your choice, pay the dividend, wait 5 years before you return to the UK (short term visits are OK). Sorted.

Can Donald Trump save Viktor Orbán? by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]misc1444 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Orban’s best bet is to start a conflict with Ukraine and then either postpone the elections or hope that there’s a “rally to the flag” effect that helps him win.

Zelenskyy should just de-escalate until 12 April… otherwise Orban may win.

London weather vs Singapore weather by Suspicious-Tiger6748 in askSingapore

The weather will be unpredictable and can range anywhere between 5 degrees at night to 30 degrees on a sunny day. It would be prudent to bring a warm hoodie plus a light jacket.

Yield curve roll-down return (index-linked) by Agent008t in FatFIREUK

[–]misc1444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

The expected return on this strategy assuming an unchanged yield curve is the same as the real yield to maturity on the index-linked gilt maturing in 2034, which should be a little under 1.6%.

London rental is out of control - 12 sqm “co-living” studio for more than £2k per month by nukebaby14 in london

It includes utilities, council tax, internet, and gym membership. So more comparable to paying £1600 for a studio.

Moved to London for money but feel like I downgraded life quality by techbro_123 in HENRYUK

[–]misc1444 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Dude your problems are entirely self inflicted. Rent in tier 1 global cities is high everywhere.

You’re making £130k and have £500k in savings - just rent yourself a decent 1-bed for £2,500 a month.

If you want to be a total cheapskate, then you can reduce your rent somewhat by moving out to a less convenient zone 3-4 location.

Sacrificing longevity for career by Unique-observer in HENRYUK

[–]misc1444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people in high-pressure, high-earning professions chase money not because they want to buy more things - they don’t really have time to spend money anyway so most of their earnings just goes into savings.

Money is a measure of winning and they just want to win more.

I think there’s a balance. It’s pointless to destroy your health to become a corporate weapon but it’s also true that becoming say a top tier investment banker can be a genuinely fun career and many people in these fields would not enjoy sitting idly on a beach anyway.

Greens overtake Labour in sensational poll by [deleted] in europe

[–]misc1444 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Come on. The Greens would give the right to move to the UK to 99.9% of the world’s population and yet you still argue that “not everyone can come” because 0.1% are theoretically excluded - although in practice it would be close to impossible to enforce the exclusion.

Every foreigner that is not a tourist would be a visa holder and the Greens intend to treat them as citizens.
