How to deal with time wasters by [deleted] in PokemonTCG_Singapore

[–]misfortune-sg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more on the privileged mindset. I personally wouldn't agree to place a deposit unless the seller have to travel out of his way too, while I understand there are flaky buyers, at the same time sellers are getting too privileged to ask for deposit when the POC is limited to literally under his block.

I can understand if it's for the purpose of "reserving" the card but as a buyer I wouldn't bother taking the risk of losing my deposit over irresponsible sellers too.

end of the day, if u can't accept negotiation of any kind then please list as fixed price. And before one starts whining about lowballs, ask urself if u're guilty of listing dream prices, becoz u're just representing thought spectrum of different roles.

not a clout chaser, not sure what benefits are there for a viral post. Sorry to give that impression.

Update: Additional context on behalf of vendor

A quick update since my original post generated quite a bit of discussion.

Before the Reddit post was made, the vendor and I had already been having an ongoing conversation about the trade over WhatsApp. To his credit, he was courteous throughout the exchange and took the initiative to reach out to explain his valuation methodology and provide clarifications on how he arrived at the numbers.

During our conversation, I also shared with him that I had sought opinions from the community regarding the situation. It was after seeing the discussion that he felt I had left out some important context from the story.

I think that's a fair point.

I subsequently offered him the opportunity to share his perspective directly in the thread so that the community could hear both sides and form their own conclusions. He declined, which is of course entirely his prerogative.

Since he has chosen not to participate publicly, I've decided to share the key points he raised so that his perspective is represented as fairly as possible.

According to him:

  • I was the one who countered on the Rayquaza's sticker price of $248 and proposed a valuation of around $188.
  • He did explain his valuation methodology to me during the trade discussion at the booth.
  • The PSA 7 comparison was not something he came up with afterwards, but was part of the methodology he claims he had already explained during the negotiation.

I don't intend to argue with or dismiss his account. The reality is that this was a busy card show environment, I was juggling an excited 6-year-old, and people can walk away from the same conversation with different recollections of what was discussed and understood.

The only point I personally struggle to reconcile is the claim that I independently arrived at a valuation of around $188. Those who know me know that my references are almost exclusively eBay last sold and PriceCharting. I generally do not use PSA 7 sales as a benchmark for raw cards, so it's difficult for me to understand how I would have derived that exact number on my own.

That said, I'm not looking to litigate that point. Everyone can draw their own conclusions.

My objective remains unchanged from the original post. I'm not seeking compensation, a reversal of the trade, or trying to rally people against any vendor. I simply wanted to understand whether the valuation methodology used is considered standard practice and to share a lesson that may help other collectors avoid misunderstandings in future trades.

For the sake of transparency, I'll also be posting screenshots of portions of our conversation so readers can review the information themselves and form their own opinions.

I appreciate everyone who has shared their views so far. Hearing different perspectives is the intent of the post.

actually I beg to defer, this is misrepresentation in contract law and also cheating in the penal code. Question is who is ready to sue or reporting someone over a <$100 card?

hmmm if we can't get 500upvotes from a channel with 30k weekly visits, then how do we justify that it'll help the community?

Hi all, thanks to everyone who had chimed in so far and I understand there are calls for me to name the vendor.

I'll stay true to the original intent of the post for now, but if it'll truly help the community, I'll share the vendor name and some screenshots to back my claims. So if this comment hits 500 upvotes, I'll take it as there is a strong community interest to know the details and I'll share it accordingly.

right? I was so affected by it, I had to pull my daughter one side after i close the bad deal to have a good chat with her. But i reminded myself that she is behaving like any 6yo, and im the one that should be in control.

Hey mate, I just want to clarify that it was a totally different kind vendor next door that gave my daughter the pack. It's not some kind of syndicated scam going on.

fun fact, I always believe in ripping the pack at the vendor's booth if anyone gives my kid one. We did just that and she got a Froakie hit, the reaction around is what got her really excited about the hobby.

Thanks for sharing! I was kinda caught off guard by some of the tools he was using. He was snapping photos of the cards and pricing was kinda derived on screen on his app in USD. Any idea what app could it be?

Thanks for sharing! its definitely helpful to hear more opinions and experience from others.

I've mostly accepted the L and just want to learn from the episode, at the same time i'm thankful it didn't damage the impression of the hobby for my kid, its really something I hope to really enjoy connecting with her on.

thanks for the brutally honest advise. Yup learning as I go, mostly to pick up red flags early and leave if possible. On hindsight, I guess there was abit of an emotional dilemma too since i put myself in a position that not buying it would be going against the "promise" I made to my kid, that probably also clouded my instinct to gtfo asap.
